This document outlines a lesson on multi-digit multiplication, focusing on multiplying up to 3-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers. It includes a word problem involving the donation of notebooks, demonstrates step-by-step multiplication methods, and introduces the Lattice Method and the Distributive Property of Multiplication. The lesson concludes with a group activity for practicing different multiplication methods.

Chapter 1: Whole Numbers
Multi-Digit
LESSON 1 Multiplication
@ Lesson Outcomes
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:
* multiply up to 3-digit numbers by up to 2-digit numbers without
or with regrouping (M4NS-Ic-43.7); and
* solve word problems involving multi-digit multiplication.

The Circle of Mathematicians of 123 Elementary School solicits notebooks to be
donated to the schools in the far-flung area of a certain municipality. They collected a total
of 232 packs of notebooks. If each pack contains 12 notebooks, how many notebooks did
the organization collect?
@ Let's Focus
To visualize the problem, we can draw 232 packs with 12 notebooks each. But
drawing these will take us time. Instead, we represent them like below.
232
Based on our illustration, we can now visualize that there are 232 packs with 12
notebooks each. Thus, we can simply put this into multiplication sentence as 232 x 12 = N.
Chapter 1: WHOLE NUMBERS Lesson 1: Multi-Digit Multiplication. 1We can write the factors vertically to easily perform the operation as shown below.

But, how does this work?
Let us first recall the terms involved in multiplication. Factors are the numbers
which we multiply. Product is the answer which we get in multiplication.

In multiplying a three-digit by a two-digit number, we follow these steps.
‘Step 1: Multiply the ones place of
the multiplicand by the ones place of the
multiplier.

Teaching Mathematics in the Intermediate GradesAnother way to multiply multi-digit numbers is through the use of Lattice Method.
are three steps to follow in multiplying numbers using Lattice Method.
Stép 2: Multiply. Step 3: Add.
_ Step 1: Prepare.
Using the Lattice Method, we still got 2 784 as the answer.
‘Another method which we can use in multiplying multi-digit numbers is by applying
Distributive Property of Multiplication over Addition (DPMA) which you have learned
you were in the primary grades.
Our number sentence is 232 x 12 = N.
12 can be renamed as 10 + 2.
So, our new equation is 232 «(10 + 2) =N.
Working the equation, we get the results as follows.
(232 x 10) + (232 x 2)
2320 + 464
