Chapter 1: Whole Numbers Multi-Digit LESSON 1 Multiplication @ Lesson Outcomes At the end of the lesson, you should be able to: * multiply up to 3-digit numbers by up to 2-digit numbers without or with regrouping (M4NS-Ic-43.7); and * solve word problems involving multi-digit multiplication. Bresson Opener The Circle of Mathematicians of 123 Elementary School solicits notebooks to be donated to the schools in the far-flung area of a certain municipality. They collected a total of 232 packs of notebooks. If each pack contains 12 notebooks, how many notebooks did the organization collect? @ Let's Focus To visualize the problem, we can draw 232 packs with 12 notebooks each. But drawing these will take us time. Instead, we represent them like below. 232 Based on our illustration, we can now visualize that there are 232 packs with 12 notebooks each. Thus, we can simply put this into multiplication sentence as 232 x 12 = N. Chapter 1: WHOLE NUMBERS Lesson 1: Multi-Digit Multiplication. 1 We can write the factors vertically to easily perform the operation as shown below. 232 m2 But, how does this work? Let us first recall the terms involved in multiplication. Factors are the numbers which we multiply. Product is the answer which we get in multiplication. = factors “ N product In multiplying a three-digit by a two-digit number, we follow these steps. ‘Step 1: Multiply the ones place of the multiplicand by the ones place of the multiplier. 232 x12 4 Step 2: Multiply the tens place of the multiplicand by the ones place of the multiplier. 232 AQ 64 Step 3: Multiply the hundreds place of the multiplicand by the ones place of the multiplier. 232 x12 464 Step 4: Multiply the ones place of the multiplicand by the tens place of the multiplier. Step 5: Multiply the tens place of the multiplicand by the tens place of the multiplier. 232 x12 464 32 Step 6: Multiply the hundreds place of the multiplicand by the tens place of the multiplier. 232 x12 464 232 Step 7: Add the partial products. 232 x12 464 + 232 2784 Therefore, the Circle of Mathematicians donated 2 784 notebooks. Teaching Mathematics in the Intermediate Grades Another way to multiply multi-digit numbers is through the use of Lattice Method. are three steps to follow in multiplying numbers using Lattice Method. Stép 2: Multiply. Step 3: Add. _ Step 1: Prepare. Using the Lattice Method, we still got 2 784 as the answer. ‘Another method which we can use in multiplying multi-digit numbers is by applying Distributive Property of Multiplication over Addition (DPMA) which you have learned you were in the primary grades. Our number sentence is 232 x 12 = N. 12 can be renamed as 10 + 2. So, our new equation is 232 «(10 + 2) =N. Working the equation, we get the results as follows. (232 x 10) + (232 x 2) 2320 + 464 fet ey 2.784 Let's Do These Group by 3s. Use the three methods in multiplying multi-step numbers. Be sure ‘each member works on a different method. Compare your answers. 453 x 34=N Chapter 1: WHOLE NUMBERS Lesson 1: Multi-Digit Multiplication
