Introduction

What is a Sacrament?

 Definition: A sacrament is an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace (CCC

1131). The sacraments are visible signs that effect what they signify, bringing about
spiritual transformation in those who receive them worthily.
 Early Church Fathers:
o St. Augustine: "The sacraments are visible signs of invisible grace" (De
Catechizandis Rudibus, 50).
o St. Thomas Aquinas: "A sacrament is a sign of a sacred reality and a means of
sanctification."
 Scriptural Basis:
o John 3:5 – "Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the
kingdom of God." This emphasizes the necessity of baptism.
o Matthew 28:19 – "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them
in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."
o Ephesians 5:26 – Christ "cleansed [the Church] by the washing of water with the
word."

Purpose & Necessity of the Sacraments

 CCC 1129: The sacraments are "necessary for salvation" as they confer the grace of
Christ upon believers and unite them with Him.
 Early Church Fathers:
o St. Cyprian of Carthage: "No one can have God as his Father who does not have
the Church as his Mother."
o St. John Chrysostom: "Let us approach the sacraments with a sincere heart, for
they are the wellsprings of divine grace."
 Scriptural Basis:
o Acts 2:38 – "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus
Christ for the forgiveness of your sins."
o Titus 3:5 – "He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but
because of His mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by
the Holy Spirit."
