- Efficacious signs instituted by Christ to give grace
- Divided into three classifications
o Initiation – Baptism, Confirmation & Holy Eucharist
o Healing – Reconciliation & Anointing of the Sick
o Service – Marriage & Holy Orders
- The purpose of the sacraments is to sanctify men, to build up the Body of Christ, and, finally, to
give worship to God
- The sacraments nourish, strengthen, and express faith
LESSON 2 – BAPTISM
BAPTISM
- St. Thomas defines baptism as the “first step in Christian walk of life”.
- First Sacrament to be received by the people.
- Open the doors to all other Sacraments.
- baptizein which means “to plunge” or “to immerse”
- which we are buried with Christ and rise with Him
GRACE OF BAPTISM
- forgiveness of original sin
- made an adoptive son of the Father
- made a temple of the Holy Spirit
- incorporated into the Church
- made a sharer in the priesthood of Christ
MINISTERS OF BAPTISM
- Ordinary Ministers – Bishop, Priest & Deacon
- Extraordinary Ministers - In danger of death, a baptized lay person can perform the sacrament
provided that he uses the proper matter (water) and form (N., I baptize you in the name of the
Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit).
RITE OF BAPTISM
o Reception of the Children (at the door of the Church)
▪ Parents and celebrant engage in a question and answer dialogue
▪ Naming the child &
▪ Stating what they want for their child: faith, baptism, life in Christ
▪ The parents and godparents are instructed about their duties
▪ The child is signed with the cross by the celebrant and parents and godparents
o Liturgy of the Word (gathered at the ambo)
▪ Moves to the place where they can hear God’s Word (Reading and Homily)
▪ Intercessions (Prayers of the faithful) – pray and invoke the saints
▪ Prayer of exorcism and anointing before baptism
▪ Anoint the child’s breast with oil of catechumens (medicinal: protecting the
child from the devil and the forces of sin)
▪ Process to the baptistery
o Celebration of the Sacrament (at the baptismal font)
▪ Blessing and invocation of God over baptismal water
▪ Renunciation of sin and profession of faith
▪ Baptism (with 3 immersions or pouring) – held by the mother or father
▪ Explanatory rites
▪ Anoint the crown of the child’s head with chrism
▪ Clothing with white garment
▪ Present the parents and godparents with a candle lighted from the Paschal
Candle

LESSON 3 – CONFIRMATION
CONFIRMATION
- Perfects baptismal grace
o root us more deeply in the divine filiation
o incorporate us more firmly into Christ
o strengthen our bond with the Church
o associate us more closely with her mission
o help us bear witness
- We receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit
o Wisdom is both the knowledge of and judgment about “divine things”
o Understanding is penetrating insight into the very heart of things, especially those
higher truths that are necessary for our eternal salvation
o Counsel allows a man to be directed by God in matters necessary for his salvation
o Fortitude denotes a firmness of mind in doing good and in avoiding evil
o Knowledge is the ability to judge correctly about matters of faith and right action
o Piety is, principally, revering God with filial affection, paying worship and duty to God
o Fear of God is, in this context, “filial” or chaste fear whereby we revere God and avoid
separating ourselves from him
PASTORAL CONSIDERATIONS

o Must be in the age of reason

o must be in the state of grace
o must have the intention of receiving the sacrament

o Must be able to help the candidate grow in faith
o Preferred to be the godparents during baptism
RITE OF CONFIRMATION

LESSON 4 – HOLY EUCHARIST
HOLY EUCHARIST AS MEMORIAL
- Memorial of the passion, death and resurrection of Christ
- Memorial of God’s saving action for mankind
- “This is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me.” Lk 22:19
- Eucharistic Prayer
o Starts with Thanksgiving and ends with the Doxology
o Anamnesis – remembering God’s marvelous/salvific work
o Epiclesis – Invocation to the Holy Spirit to consecrate the gifts of human hands
HOLY EUCHARIST AS SACRAMENT OF LOVE
- Once called “Agape” Greek word for love
- The Fraction
o When the priest breaks the bread and outs a piece of the host into the chalice to signify
the unity of the Body and Blood of the Lord
o The sacrifice of Christ is made present
o the sacrifice of Christ also becomes the sacrifice of the members of his Body
- The Presentation of Gifts
o is a symbol of boundless concern for others
HOLY EUCHARIST AS PASCHAL BANQUET
- Communion
o We receive the real Body of Christ
o We receive graces to follow the teachings and examples of Christ
o It is a call to participate in the sacrifice of others
o Aims to break the boundaries of social status – to bring about peace and unity
- Could also be called as Sacrament of Unity
PLEDGE OF FUTURE GLORY
- Our profession and belief in Christ’s Resurrection and 2 nd coming is an implication of our belief in
our own Resurrection with Christ at the end of time
- We are enjoined to follow Christ’s teachings and examples
