ACKNOWLEDGMENT
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the individuals and institutions that played a vital
role in making my Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) a successful and fulfilling
journey. Their guidance, support, and encouragement contributed immensely to my learning
experience, and I am deeply appreciative of their efforts.
I extend my heartfelt appreciation to Ojeagbonye P.E, my SIWES supervisor at the University of
Lagos (UNILAG). Their invaluable guidance, encouragement, and unwavering support
throughout my training period made a significant impact on my understanding of Library and
Information Science. Under their supervision, I gained practical knowledge that complemented
my academic studies, helping me develop essential skills needed for my future career. Their
mentorship not only improved my technical competencies but also instilled in me a deeper
appreciation for the role of libraries in education and research.
I am also grateful to the Library and Information Science Department at Kwara State University
(KWASU) for providing me with the opportunity to participate in the SIWES program. Their
continuous support, academic guidance, and encouragement have been instrumental in my
educational growth. The knowledge and foundational skills I acquired through my coursework at
KWASU prepared me well for this industrial training, allowing me to apply theoretical concepts
in a real-world setting. Their commitment to student success has been a significant factor in my
professional and academic development.
Throughout my training, I had the privilege of working with experienced professionals who were
always willing to provide guidance and answer my questions. Their shared insights and practical
demonstrations enhanced my understanding of library operations, research support, and
information dissemination. The hands-on experience I gained while assisting library users,
organizing resources, and utilizing digital information systems was invaluable.
I want to acknowledge my colleagues and fellow interns for their camaraderie and support. The
shared experiences, discussions, and teamwork we engaged in made the training period more
interactive and enriching. Learning alongside others who shared similar interests helped me
develop not only professional skills but also meaningful relationships that will continue beyond
the SIWES program.
I am grateful to my family and friends for their encouragement and unwavering support
throughout my academic and professional journey. Their belief in my abilities and continuous
motivation have always been a source of strength for me.
In conclusion, my SIWES experience at the University of Lagos Library has been an invaluable
learning opportunity. The practical knowledge, professional connections, and skills I acquired
during this period have prepared me for future career challenges and opportunities. I sincerely
appreciate everyone who contributed to my success and growth during this program
ABSTRACT
This report provides an overview of my participation in the Student Industrial Work Experience
Scheme (SIWES) within the field of Library and Information Science. The primary objective of
the SIWES program is to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and its practical
application by exposing students to real-world professional experiences. Through this program, I
had the opportunity to gain hands-on training and develop essential skills that complement my
academic studies.
During my industrial training, I was assigned to the Acquisition and Cataloguing Units, where I
actively participated in various tasks related to resource organization, cataloguing, database
management, and patron assistance. These responsibilities allowed me to apply theoretical
concepts learned in the classroom to real-life scenarios in a library setting. Working in these
units enhanced my understanding of library operations, particularly in the areas of database
administration, information management, and customer service.
Through this experience, I gained a deeper appreciation for the role of libraries in facilitating
access to information and supporting academic research. The practical tasks I engaged in not
only improved my technical skills but also strengthened my ability to work efficiently in a
professional environment. Additionally, interacting with library users helped me develop strong
communication and problem-solving skills, which are essential in the field of Library and
Information Science.
