Ethics Module Part 2: Ethical Data Analysis

Overview
Donald Rubin is an Emeritus Professor1 of Statistics at Harvard University. For many years he acted as a
consultant for the tobacco industry. He wrote a paper describing that work, discussing his thoughts on
the ethics of doing so (Rubin 2002).

Read Rubin’s paper and examine the ethics guidelines from the American Statistical Association (ASA).
(These are posted in the course’s OWL website as attachments to the assignment for this part of the
Ethics Module assessment.) Then, write a two-part reflective report addressing the following questions:

Part 1: Does Rubin’s explanation of his work follow the ethical guidelines set out by the ASA?

Part 2: Which one(s) of the four ethical theories covered in this class do you think apply to
Rubin’s explanation of his work? And, in what way?

It is up to you to determine the length of your responses. They should be as short as possible while
containing all the necessary information that addresses the points you want to make, i.e. write concisely
and informatively.

Grading
You will be graded according to the rubric that appears at the end of this document.
