1.Introduction
The world of education has witnessed a massive transformation with the rise of Ed-Tech
(Educational Technology). Traditional classroom learning is now complemented—and in
some cases replaced—by online platforms that offer affordable, accessible,
and high-quality education. One such success story in the Indian Ed-Tech industry is
Physics Wallah (PW), founded by Alakh Pandey.
Physics Wallah started as a free educational YouTube channel in 2016, where Alakh Pandey
taught Physics and Mathematics in an engaging and simplified manner. His unique teaching
style, deep conceptual clarity, and ability to connect with students made the channel highly
popular among aspirants of competitive exams like JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) and
NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test). Unlike other Ed-Tech startups that relied
heavily on funding and aggressive marketing, Physics Wallah focused on delivering quality
content at minimal costs, making it a student-centric platform.
Over time, the platform expanded into a full-fledged Ed-Tech company, launching its own
mobile app and website that provided structured courses, study materials, and test series
at highly affordable prices. With this approach, PW disrupted the Indian education market
by offering an alternative to expensive coaching institutes while maintaining high-quality
teaching standards.
However, the journey of Physics Wallah was not without challenges. From financial
struggles and technological barriers to competition from giant Ed-Tech companies,
Alakh Pandey faced numerous obstacles. Yet, through determination, strategic decision-
making, and a strong student-first approach, he successfully built Physics Wallah into one
of India’s most trusted and affordable online education platforms.
This microproject aims to explore the entrepreneurial journey of Alakh Pandey, the
strategies behind PW’s success, the challenges faced in building an Ed-Tech startup, and
the impact of Physics Wallah on the education sector. By analyzing this case, we gain
insights into how an individual’s vision, perseverance, and innovative mindset can
revolutionize an industry and create a lasting impact.
EDE
2.Entrepreneur’s Background
2.1 Life and Education
Alakh Pandey, the founder of Physics Wallah (PW), was born in Prayagraj (formerly
Allahabad), Uttar Pradesh, India. Coming from a middle-class family, he faced several
financial challenges in his early life. Despite these hardships, he was a bright and
hardworking student with a keen interest in Physics and Mathematics. His passion for
teaching developed during his school years when he started tutoring younger students to
support his family financially.
Alakh Pandey pursued his B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from Harcourt Butler
Technical University (HBTU), Kanpur. However, he soon realized that his true passion was
teaching rather than engineering. This realization led him to make a bold decision—to drop
out of college and dedicate himself entirely to teaching.
2.2The Beginning of His Teaching Career
Before launching Physics Wallah, Alakh Pandey worked as a teacher in coaching
institutes, where he taught Physics to students preparing for competitive exams like JEE and
NEET. He quickly gained popularity among students due to his engaging teaching style,
deep conceptual clarity, and ability to simplify complex topics. However, he also noticed a
major problem in India’s education system—quality coaching was expensive, and many
students from middle-class and lower-income families could not afford it.
Realizing the need for affordable and accessible education, Alakh Pandey decided to take a
new approach. In 2016, he started his own YouTube channel, "Physics Wallah", where he
began teaching Physics for free. His goal was simple—to provide high-quality education
to every student, regardless of their financial background.
2.3The Rise of Physics Wallah
Initially, Alakh Pandey recorded his lectures using a basic mobile camera and a whiteboard.
Despite limited resources, his passion and teaching skills attracted thousands of students.
Within a few years, his YouTube channel grew exponentially, crossing millions of
subscribers. His videos became a go-to resource for students preparing for JEE and NEET,
making him one of the most popular online educators in India.
Encouraged by the overwhelming response, he decided to expand his reach by launching the
Physics Wallah app and website in 2020. This step marked the transition of Physics Wallah
EDE
3.Idea & Inception of Physics Wallah
3.1Identifying the Problem in Education
The Indian education system is known for its intense competition, especially for exams like
JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) and NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test).
Every year, millions of students aspire to enter prestigious institutions like IITs, NITs, and
medical colleges. However, quality coaching institutes charge extremely high fees, often
ranging from ₹1.5 lakh to ₹3 lakh per year, making it unaffordable for students from
middle-class and lower-income backgrounds.
While working as a teacher in coaching institutes, Alakh Pandey noticed that many talented
students could not afford these coaching classes. He believed that education should not be a
privilege but a basic right for every student, regardless of their financial situation. This
realization planted the seed of an idea—to provide affordable, high-quality education to
every student in India.
3.2The Birth of Physics Wallah on YouTube
In 2016, Alakh Pandey took a bold step. Instead of continuing with traditional coaching
institutes, he decided to start teaching online for free. He launched a YouTube channel
named "Physics Wallah", where he began uploading Physics and Mathematics video
lectures for students preparing for JEE and NEET.
With no advanced equipment, he started with a simple smartphone camera and a
whiteboard. His classes were interactive, engaging, and filled with real-life examples,
making even the most complex topics easy to understand. Unlike many online educators who
focused on theoretical teaching, Alakh Pandey emphasized conceptual clarity and
problem-solving techniques, which quickly attracted thousands of students.
His YouTube channel gained popularity rapidly, and within a few years, he had millions of
subscribers. Students appreciated his humble approach, humor, and unique storytelling
style that made learning Physics enjoyable.
Challenges in the Early Days
Although the channel was growing, Alakh Pandey faced several challenges in the beginning:
1. Financial Struggles – Initially, YouTube revenue was not enough to sustain his
efforts, and he had to manage expenses on his own.
2. Technical Limitations – With no professional setup, he had to record and edit videos
by himself using basic tools.
3. Competition – Many big Ed-Tech companies were already in the market, offering
courses with better production quality and advanced platforms.
4. Skepticism from Others – Many people doubted whether free online education
could be a sustainable model.
EDE
Despite these obstacles, Alakh Pandey continued his journey with determination and belief
in his vision.
3.3Transition from YouTube to a Full-Fledged Ed-Tech Startup
By 2020, the Physics Wallah YouTube channel had millions of subscribers, but students
demanded more structured courses, doubt-solving sessions, and test series. To fulfill
these needs, Alakh Pandey decided to take the next big step—launching the Physics Wallah
App and Website.
In May 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Physics Wallah mobile app was
officially launched. The app offered:
• Structured courses for JEE and NEET at affordable prices (₹3,500 - ₹4,000 per
year).
• Live classes and recorded lectures.
• Study materials, test series, and previous year question papers.
• Doubt-solving sessions with expert teachers.
The launch was a massive success, with the app getting over 100,000 downloads on the
first day. Thousands of students enrolled in the courses, proving that affordable online
education had huge demand.
3.4Physics Wallah Becomes a Unicorn Startup
As the platform gained popularity, Physics Wallah expanded its team, bringing in top
educators, subject experts, and technology specialists to improve content delivery. Unlike
other Ed-Tech companies that focused on raising external funding, Physics Wallah initially
relied on organic growth and student support.
However, in June 2022, Physics Wallah raised $100 million in funding from WestBridge
Capital and GSV Ventures, making it a unicorn startup with a valuation of $1.1 billion.
This milestone established PW as a major player in India’s Ed-Tech industry, competing
with companies like BYJU’S, Unacademy, and Vedantu.
EDE
4.Business Model of Physics Wallah (PW)
Physics Wallah (PW) has revolutionized the Ed-Tech industry in India by providing high-
quality, affordable education to millions of students. Unlike other Ed-Tech startups that
heavily depend on high-priced courses and external funding, PW follows a student-first
approach, ensuring that education remains accessible to all.
1. Affordable Online Courses
One of the biggest reasons for PW’s success is its low-cost course model. Unlike traditional
coaching institutes that charge ₹1.5 - ₹3 lakh per year, PW offers full-year structured
courses for as low as ₹3,500 - ₹4,000.
• JEE (Engineering Entrance) and NEET (Medical Entrance) Preparation – PW
offers recorded and live lectures, study materials, mock tests, and doubt-solving
sessions at a fraction of the cost of traditional coaching.
• Foundation Courses (Class 9 & 10) – For school students aiming to strengthen their
concepts in Mathematics and Science.
• Government Exam Preparation – PW has expanded into UPSC, SSC, and
Banking exam coaching.
How It Works:
1. Students enroll through the PW app or website.
2. They get access to live & recorded classes, tests, and PDFs.
3. Doubt-solving and mentorship support enhance learning.
This affordable pricing strategy allows millions of students from rural and economically
weaker backgrounds to access quality education.
2. Freemium Model (YouTube & Free Content Strategy)
PW follows a Freemium model, where a large portion of content is available for free on
YouTube, and premium features are available on the PW app.
• YouTube Lectures – Physics Wallah started as a free YouTube channel, and even
today, 80% of content is freely available.
• Live Classes on App & Website – Additional structured, paid courses are offered
for students who need personalized guidance and in-depth coaching.
This strategy builds trust and credibility, allowing students to experience high-quality
teaching before enrolling in paid courses.
EDE
3. Multiple Revenue Streams
Despite keeping course fees low, PW generates revenue through multiple sources, ensuring
profitability.
a) Subscription-Based Model
• Students subscribe to year-long or short-term courses for JEE, NEET, and school-
level exams.
• Course prices are significantly lower than competitors, attracting a large student
base.
b) YouTube Monetization
• PW earns revenue from YouTube ads due to its millions of subscribers and high
watch time.
• This passive income helps reduce the cost burden on students.
c) Study Materials & Books
• PW sells printed study materials, books, and guides at affordable prices.
• These books are used as reference materials for entrance exam preparation.
d) Offline Coaching (PW Vidyapeeth)
• PW has launched offline coaching centers called PW Vidyapeeth in major cities.
• These centers provide hybrid learning – combining online and offline classes.
• This expansion helps PW compete with traditional coaching institutes like Allen
and Aakash.
e) Sponsorships & Brand Collaborations
• PW collaborates with brands, Ed-Tech tools, and learning platforms for
sponsorships and advertisements.
4. Cost-Efficient Operations
Unlike other Ed-Tech giants that spend millions on marketing and celebrity endorsements,
PW operates with minimal expenses, focusing on:
1. Organic Growth – Instead of costly advertisements, PW relies on word-of-mouth
marketing and social media engagement.
2. Efficient Resource Management – PW avoids unnecessary spending on
infrastructure and operates largely online, reducing overhead costs.
EDE
3. Student-Centered Pricing – The affordability of courses ensures higher enrollment
rates, allowing revenue to scale with a large user base.
This lean operational model keeps costs low while maintaining high-quality education
standards.
5. Expansion & Future Plans
PW is rapidly expanding beyond JEE/NEET coaching into other education sectors:
• PW Skills – Providing courses in coding, AI, and job-oriented skills.
• UPSC & Government Exam Preparation – New batches for civil services
aspirants.
• International Expansion – Plans to offer global online courses.
• New Offline Centers – Expanding PW Vidyapeeth across India.

7. Entrepreneurial Lessons from Physics Wallah
The success of Alakh Pandey and Physics Wallah offers valuable entrepreneurial lessons
for aspiring business leaders and startup founders.
1. Passion & Purpose Matter More Than Money
• Alakh Pandey did not start PW for profit—he started it to help students.
• His strong commitment to affordable education built trust and loyalty among
students, leading to rapid growth.
2. Focus on Solving Real Problems
• PW succeeded because it solved a major problem—expensive coaching classes.
• Instead of competing with big Ed-Tech firms, PW focused on low-cost, high-quality
education, creating its own market.

• The lesson: You don’t need massive investment to start—just a great idea and
execution.
4. Organic Growth Over Heavy Advertising
• Unlike many Ed-Tech startups that spend millions on ads, PW grew through word-
of-mouth marketing and student testimonials.
• This cost-efficient approach made PW a profitable company while many
competitors struggled financially.
5. Adaptability & Innovation Are Key
• PW started with free YouTube classes, then expanded into a mobile app, offline
centers, and new course categories.
• This constant innovation helped PW stay ahead in the competitive Ed-Tech
industry.
EDE
6. Staying True to Core Values
• Despite receiving millions in funding, PW kept its course prices affordable instead
of maximizing profits.
• Student welfare remains the top priority, proving that business success and
ethical responsibility can go hand in hand.
These lessons make Alakh Pandey’s journey an inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs,
showing that determination, innovation, and a strong mission can create massive impact.
EDE
8. Conclusion
The story of Physics Wallah is a true testament to the power of entrepreneurship,
education, and innovation. From a one-man YouTube channel to a billion-dollar Ed-Tech
company, Alakh Pandey has shown that passion and a student-first approach can disrupt
an industry.
PW’s success lies in its:
• Affordable pricing model that challenges expensive coaching institutes.
• Student-centric approach, ensuring education reaches everyone.
• Strong content quality, making complex subjects easy to understand.
• Scalability & adaptability, expanding beyond JEE/NEET to government exams,
job skills, and offline learning.
While many Ed-Tech startups struggle to stay profitable, PW remains successful because it
puts education before profits, making it one of the most trusted learning platforms in
India.
