Figure 1.1: Typical layout plan with basic wiring.
A DC house in a residential area is powered by V = [ ( c × e ) + ( b × d ) ] V , represented in the above figure. 1.1,
The available points for appliances connected in the house are also described, which also can be extended
with available switches along with circuit breaker. (All rooms have a dimension of Length x Width x Height
= (15 m× 4.5 m ×9 m); you are required to consider the wirelength according to the assumption of room
dimensions given.
1 (a) Draw the circuit diagram (as per Fig. 1.1) for this DC house (ignoring the earthing) with [4.5]
. maximum possible loads (choose from Table 2) into the available switchboard, ALL
CIRCUIT BREAKERS AND SWITCHES GIVEN INTO THE PICTURES MUST BE
USED. Calculate the total power consumption by the loads (Select your maximum loads as
per design from Table 2). Select circuit breakers (from Table 1) suitable for the allocated
load into the room from the following list and show the necessary calculation to explain the
selection.
Available Circuit Rating Table 2: List of available loads
Breaker
A 1A, 2A,3A, 6A, and 10 A
B 16A, 20A, 25A, and 32A
C 40A, 42A, 45A, and 50A
D 63A, 72A, 80A, and 100A

Electrical Circuits 1 (DC)_Spring 24-25 Semester
(b) Redraw the circuit (as per Fig. 1.1) to reduce the power consumption by half of the previous
value if all the loads don’t require to run at a time. For Fig. 1.1 Instead of basic switch, you can [3.5]
also use SPDT, DPDT and SPnT switches if necessary.
2 For the circuit diagram found (as per Fig. 1.1), compute the value of the resistances, the number of [7.5]
. electrons, and the energy dissipated to each of the loads if all the loads are operating for (e+2)
hours.
3 What is the total energy consumption in kWh unit if all the appliances are used together for (f+2) [7.5]
. hours daily? Table 3 shows the cost of each unit. Calculate the electricity bill for the month.
Table 3: Electricity Tariff for household in

according to DPDC
Base Monthly usage BDT
in kWh
00 to 50 units 5.26 per unit
51 to 75 units 6.20 per unit
76 to 200 units 7.20 per unit
201 to 300 units 7.59 per unit
301 to 400 units 8.02 per unit
401 to 600 units 12.70 per unit
600 to above 14.48 per unit Fig. 2: Different types of wire rating
4 Calculate the resistance of the total wire needed to cover the whole connection (include wire [7.5]
. resistance; Choose appropriate wire from Fig. 2 for appropriate circuit breaker) as per Fig. 1.1 at
27°C room temperature. Choose the material of the wire as copper if (d+e) is an even number or
Aluminum if (d+e) is an odd number. Use Table 3 for resistivity ( ρ ). What is the value of the
resistance if the temperature is increased to [125+ (c*e)]˚C? Use Table 4 for Infrared Absolute
Temperature (|T i|). Show necessary calculation to determine the impact of the temperature
dependency of the conductive wire to the circuit.
