1) This paper consists of section A, B and C
2) Answer all questions in section A and B and only two (2) questions from section C
3) Non programmable calculators and mathematical table are allowed in the examination room.

5) Where necessary the following constants may be used.
Acceleration due to gravity (g) = 10m/s2

Specific heat capacity of water = 4200J/Kg/K
Specific heat capacity of copper = 400J/Kg.K

3. a) (i) State two advantages of alcohol over mercury when used as thermometric
liquid
(ii) What role does a kink (constriction) play in clinical thermometer?
(iii) The fundamental interval of un calibrated thermometer is 110cm. If the length
of mercury column when the thermometer is placed into a hot liquid is 90cm.
Determine the temperature of the hot liquid.
b) If temperature X is recorded in Celsius and Fahrenheit scales, what is the value of
temperature X?

4. a) Briefly explain why;


i. A region Transport officer (R.T.O) always insists seal- level no passenger
to stand in a bus?
ii. Bicycle frames are made up of metallic pipes?
b) A simple machine having a velocity ratio of five requires 600J of energy to lift a
load of 300N through the height of 1M. Calculate

i. The effort applied


ii. The efficiency

c) A small ball moves from the rest with a uniform acceleration of 4m/s 2. If it takes
0.5second to gain kinetic energy of 8J, find the mass of the ball.

5. (a) State:
(i) Archimedes principle. (ii) Law of flotation.
(b) A cube of side 2 cm is completely submerged in water so that the bottom of the
cube is at Depth of 10cm, Calculate: -
(i)The different between the pressure on the bottom of the cube and the pressure on
its top
(ii) The weight of water displaced by the cube.
6. (a) Explain why nose bleeding is a common problem at high altitude if one is not well
equipped
(b) A wooden block of mass 4kg is placed on an inclined plane as shown in the figure
below

(i) Find the minimum angle Ꝋat which the block would start sliding down the slope
given that the coefficiency of static and kinetic friction is 0.47 and 0.25 respectively
(ii) Calculate the acceleration of the block down the slope
7. (a) What is an inclined plane?
(b) A load of 200N is pulled long a smooth inclined plane of an angle 30 o. Find the
(i) Least force acting parallel to the plane required to pull the load.
(ii) Mechanical advantage of the plane.
(iii)Efficiency of the machine if the length of the plane is 8m
(c) A force of 25N is acting at an angle of 60 o to the horizontal. Find its
(i) Horizontal component. (ii) Vertical component
8. (a) Explain with aid of diagram how a gold leaf electroscope could be negatively
charged by induction method
(b) State three applications of the principle of moment

(c) A uniform beam AB is 4m long and weighs 500N. it is supported at its ends. A
load of 300N is placed 1.5M from the end A. determine the reaction forces on each
support.

SECTION C (30marks)
Answer only two (2) questions

9. (a) (i) Define the term machine.


(ii) Why the efficiency of machine is less the 100%
(b) The handle of the screw jack is 35cm long and the pitch of the
screw is 0.5cm. What force must be applied to the end of the handle when
lifting a load of 2200N, If the efficiency of the Jack is 40%

10. (a) (i) State Ohm's law.


(ii) State two (2) types of electric circuits.
(b) You have been provided with the resistors of 5 Ω, 10 Ω and 20 Ω.
What are the maximum and minimum resistances obtained by connecting those
resistors?
(c) Study the circuit below and then answer the questions that follow;

Calculate the current passing through the circuit when:

(i) Switch K1 is closed. (ii) Switches K1 and K2 are both closed. (iii) Switch K1 is open and K2 is
closed.
