THE HUNTER
The wolf caught a scent. There. A flash of red. With a target in sight he ran, not
worrying about the noise as he crashed through the undergrowth – it didn’t
matter if the prey ran, he’d catch it. He always did. But it didn’t run. In fact it
stopped, waiting. A girl. The wolf sniffed, confused. Where was the fear? She
didn’t smell of fear. The girl in the red cloak turned and met his eye. With a
whimper the wolf turned and fled, his tail tight between his legs. There was more
than one predator in this forest.

THE ESCAPE
It was a normal day until that boy climbed up my hair. I’d lived in this tower all
my life, he was the first person I’d seen other than my mother. He promised to
rescue me, and left me his phone so I could message him while he went to get
help. He was gone hours! I investigated the phone, it was pretty simple actually.
I found an app called ‘Uber’ and a man in a car arrived! I’d asked him to bring a
ladder, so I climbed out of the tower. Finally I was free to explore the world!

POOR UNFORTUNATE SOUL

My father told us tales of beautiful sea creatures and I longed to be like them, to
frolic beneath the waves. I knew the ocean was my destiny.
One night I finally saw them. Mermaids. They agreed to grant my wish. I was to
be one of them!
I entered the water and they began to chant. I felt a great change come over
me, but when I looked it wasn’t a shimmering tail I saw, but writhing tentacles!
Those wretched mermaids had tricked me! I was a monster! I fled. Now I lurk in
this cave, plotting my revenge...

LORD OF THE CONCH

My life was peaceful until they came along. Exploring the sand, bathing in the sun’s
warmth. But no longer. That rabble of boys changed all that. Now I’m their prisoner
as they pass me around. Apparently they can only talk if they’re holding me.
I don’t even think they know I’m in here, hiding inside my shell. But I sense tension -
they argue. It won’t be long before I can make my escape.
At last, the one they call Piggy drops me. They’re too busy shouting at each other to
notice as I stretch out my legs and scuttle away.

CURED
The plan was going smoothly, or so the piglets thought. As soon as Mr Wolf climbed the
chimney, he saw it: the boiling pot of water. He imagined the pigs sniggering while eat-
ing him for dinner; he wasn’t going to let that happen. He placed his large, furry, round-
ed bottom on top of the chimney. Smoke started filling the room below. The pigs began
frantically coughing. Later that evening, Mrs Wolf asked, “What’s for dinner, my dear?”
“Smoked bacon,” chuckled her husband.

WAKE UP CALL
He was sitting in the tavern with his friends when it happened. John heard a loud roar
from outside and rushed out to witness the crimson dragon launching an attack on his
city!
Everyone was in shock and people ran for their safety. John, however, didn’t move. This
attack wasn’t a surprise to him. It was he who was the mastermind of this attack. This
city’s the most corrupt place in Harriland. Nobody would be hurt, but John knew that
their leader would leave his people. They needed to know that he wouldn’t help them
when they needed it most!

FIN
I’ve had it. They kill millions of us every year. My kind is disappearing. All kinds here are
disappearing and it’s because of them.
It’s time for revenge. I shall act. I shall strike.
My jaws tear at people. My jaws tear at the boat. I can see the fear in their eyes and it
feels good. It reflects the fear in my heart.
But then I feel the harpoon in me. They have finally got me too. I am now a number.
Another one in the millions of sharks humans slaughter every year.

CONSTERNATION
It’d been watching me for hours and, even though I could see it in the dark reflection
of the computer screen, I didn’t dare turn around. Even when I heard the buzz of the
security alarms disable, I just kept staring ahead, trying not to shake. The air was
quiet but I still felt the daggers of its eyes.
I calmed my breathing and slowly turned around to see it. The grinning face stared
me down from the doorway. “How did you get in?” I whispered breathlessly.
“The window,” it replied.
My heart stopped. I live on the thirteenth floor.
