BUILDING A ROUTINE // STEPS
01 // CONSULT YOUR CALENDAR | TIMECODE: 14:29
● Realistically assess how much time you can commit to your routine.
● Make sure you leave enough time for other things, like social life, exercise, relaxation, fun, etc. That will
allow you to bring your full focus to your drawing time.
● Try to spread the time out as evenly as possible - shorter sessions spread out over a week are more
effective than long sessions that are irregular or random.
02 // SET GOALS | TIMECODE: 17:04
● Make sure they are attainable. That means they can be measured and realistically fit in your schedule.
○ Example of an unattainable goal: I will make my best painting ever.
○ Example of an attainable goal: Drawing 30 minutes, 3 times a week.
● Set goals that connect with your own situation, interests, and artistic strengths.
● The Setting Goals worksheet can help you with this.
03 // DIVERSIFY BETWEEN DIFFERENT ART PRACTICES | TIMECODE: 20:29
● Choose 3-4 artistic practices that align with your goals and interests.
● Think about which ones have the highest priority and which ones are less important.
● Use that as a guide to plan your routine: what will you do on which days?
04 // REVIEW & REFLECT | TIMECODE:
● The more rigid and strict your routine is, the less likely you are to maintain it.
● Schedule some time to reflect on your routine and which aspects are working, and which aspects aren’t.
Maybe you need to adjust the length of your drawing sessions, or shift focus to different activities.
● Make adjustments to your routine accordingly. Do so in a constructive and practical way.
