CHAPTER: Similarity of Triangles
th
DATE OF UPLOADING: 17 July 2023 DATE OF DISCUSSION: 25 th July 2023

1. In the given figure, ∠CAB = 90° and AD ⊥ BC. If AC = 25 cm, AB = 1 m and BD = 96.08 cm, then find the value
of AD.

2. ∆ABC is such that AB = 3 cm, BC = 2 cm and CA = 2.5 cm. If ∆DEF ~ ∆ABC and FE = 4 cm, then find the
perimeter of ADEF.
3. In the given figure, DEFG is a square and ∠BAC = 90°. Show that FG2 = BG × FC.

4. Two right triangles ABC and DBC are drawn on the same hypotenuse BC and on the same side of BC. If AC
and BD intersect at P.
Prove that AP × PC = BP × PD.
5. In fig., ∠1 = ∠2 and ∠3 = ∠4. Show that PT. QR = PR. ST.

6. In ∆ABC, D and E are the points on the sides AB and AC respectively such that DE || BC.
If AD = 6x – 7, DB = 4x – 3, AE = 3x – 3, and EC = 2x – 1 then find. the value of ‘x’.

7. In fig., ∠CAB = 90° and AD ⊥ BC If AC = 75 cm, AB = 1 m, and BD = 1.25 m, find AD.

8. In a ∆ABC, if ∠A = 90° and AD ⊥ BC, prove that AD2 = BD × DC.

9. In the given figure ∠1 = ∠2; ∠2 = ∠4
DE = 4; CE = x + 1, AE = 2x + 4; BE = 4x – 2, find x.

10. If the diagonals of a quadrilateral divide each other proportionally, prove that it is a trapezium.
11. In figure, M is mid-point of side CD of a parallelogram ABCD. The line BM is drawn intersecting AC at L and
AD produced at E. Prove that EL = 2BL

12. Any point X is taken on the side BC of a triangle ABC and XM, XN are drawn parallel to BA, CA meeting CA,
BA at M and N respectively. MN meets BC produced in T.
Prove that: TX2 = TB × TC.

13. A quadrilateral OABC in which OA = OC, the bisector of ∠AOB meet AC at D and AB at F and the bisector of
∠COB meets AC at E and BC at G. Prove that ∆ODE ~ ∆OFG.
14. In adjoining fig, O is the point of intersection of two chords AB and CD such that OB = OD, then triangles
OAC and ODB are:
(a) isosceles and similar
(b) equilateral and similar
(c) isosceles but not similar
(d) equilateral but not similar

15. If ∆ABC is similar to ∆DEF and ∠A = 47°, ∠E = 83°, then ∠C is:

(a) 80°
(b) 83°
(c) 47°
(d) 50°
16. If ∆ABC and ∆DEF are similar and 2AB = DE, BC = 8 cm, then EF is :
(a) 4 cm
(b) 16 cm
(c) 8 cm
(d) 12 cm
Directions:
(a) If both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation of Assertion.
(b) If both Assertion and Reason are correct, but Reason is not the correct explanation of Assertion.
(c) If Assertion is correct but Reason is incorrect.
(d) If Assertion is incorrect but Reason is correct.
17. Assertion : If ∆ABC and ∆PQR are congruent triangles, then they are also similar triangles.
Reason : All congruent triangles are similar but the similar triangles need not be congruent.
18. Assertion : In the ∆ABC, AB = 24 cm, BC = 10 cm and AC = 26 cm, then ∆ABC is a right angle triangle.
Reason : If in two triangles, their corresponding angles are equal, then the triangles are similar.
19. In fig. ∠PQR = 90° and QM ⊥ PR. Then,
(a) PM.MR = PR2
(b) QP.QR = PR2
(c) PM.MR = QM2

CASE BASED QUESTIONS

A scale drawing of an object is the same shape at the object but a

different size. The scale of a drawing is a comparison of the length
used on a drawing to the length it represents. The scale is written as a
ratio. The ratio of two corresponding sides in similar figures is called
the scale factor

Scale factor= length in image / corresponding length in object

If one shape can become another using revising, then the shapes are similar. Hence, two shapes are similar when
one can become the other after a resize, flip, slide or turn. In the photograph below showing the side view of a
train engine. Scale factor is 1:200.

This means that a length of 1 cm on the photograph above corresponds to a length of 200cm or 2 m, of the actual
engine. The scale can also be written as the ratio of two lengths.

1. If the length of the model is 11cm, then the overall length of the engine in the photograph above, including
the couplings (mechanism used to connect) is:
a) 22cm b) 220cm c) 220m d) 22m

2. What will affect the similarity of any two polygons?

a) They are flipped horizontally

b) They are dilated by a scale factor

c) They are translated down

d) They are not the mirror image of one another.

3. What is the actual width of the door if the width of the door in photograph is 0.35cm?
a) 0.7m b) 0.7cm c) 0.07cm d) 0.07m

4. The length of AB in the given figure:

a) 8cm b) 6cm c) 4cm d) 10cm

Answer Key:

1. 24.02m
2. 15 cm
6. 2
7. 93.75
9. x = 3 and x = – 3/2
