Quick Guide: MiniProf Bluetooth Rail

1. MiniProf Envision Coach
This is the video training software which covers all major features of MiniProf Envision and Handheld software. You can install it from the provided USB
Key or contact Greenwood Engineering or a MiniProf Agent for a download link.

2. Pre-Start
Charge the laptop/tablet and the MiniProf BT instrument before use to ensure full capacity of the battery. It is recommended to clean the profile
surface before performing measurements.

Note: Don’t charge the instrument while its temperature is below 0°C.

3. Install MiniProf Envision

Connect the supplied Greenwood USB Key to your computer/tablet and open the .exe file. Start the Envision Setup and you will be met by a screen
“Select Language”. Select your language and press “Ok” and then click on “Next”. Now follow the instructions on screen and finish the installation.

4. MiniProf Envision: System Configuration Wizard

Upon running MiniProf Envision software, you will see the System
configuration Wizard. This will guide you through the different settings. Please
make sure internet connection is available in order to install the License Key.

Click next and choose the default view for the software and later the
parameter settings. Please note that all the settings performed in this wizard
are fully changeable later. You can also skip the parameter settings if you are
not sure about the values during installation and then add them at a later
time. Click “close” to finish the setup. MiniProf Envision is now ready for use.

NOTE: Remember to remove the license keys from inside the Envision
software before uninstalling the Envision software or else your installation will
be lost permanently. This can be accessed from Tools > Licenses in Envision software. Click on the individual license and click remove to uninstall it.
Internet connection is required.

5. Mount the MiniProf BT Rail instrument

Note: Please be careful when placing the instrument – the magnets are very powerful.

Step 1: Attach the quick connecting telescopic rod to the instrument as below.

Step 2: Place the MiniProf head one of the rails, one edge at a time and place the end of the telescopic rod on the other rail.

Step 3: Make sure that the instrument is perpendicular to the rail.

6. Connect the MiniProf BT Rail to a tablet/laptop

MiniProf BT instruments can be connected to a tablet or laptop by using a MiniProf USB cable or Blue-tooth connection. Connection by using the
MiniProf USB cable is straight forward, by plugging the cable into the tablet/laptop. Instrument will blink with green light when USB connection is
established. However, you will need to pair the instrument with your device in order to use the Bluetooth connection. Once the instrument is paired
and turned on, the software will automatically connect to it. See appendix 1 and 2 of this guide for connection and pairing instructions.

To check the instrument connection click on the “Measurement” icon in the main menu of the software. Upon successful connection, the instrument
information will be shown on the bottom left and battery status on the bottom right corner of the screen.

7. Measure profile
Start a new measurement by clicking on the “New Measurement” icon or press F3. Choose a reference profile if it is available and fill out all the
relevant fields. You can also take pictures of the rail etc. before the measurement by clicking on the “photo” icon (provided that this is supported by
your laptop/tablet). When done, press “next” to verify and continue.

Note: Initialize the instrument (inner and outer encoder) before each measurement. The graphic shows that the
outer encoder is initialized.

Both boxes of this graphic will turn green when both encoders are initialized.
Version 1.0.9 Page 2 of 10

You are now ready to measure the profile. Step 1 and Step 2 below explains the start of the measuring process, which will initialize the instrument as
well as bring the measuring arm to the starting point of the profile.

Step 1:

Move the measuring arm counter clockwise until

a beep sounds and outer encoder box becomes
green in the graphic.

Step 2:

Continue to move the measuring arm further

until a second beep sounds and inner encoder
box becomes green too. Hold the arm steady till
another beep sounds and measurement starts

Step 3:

Measure the first half of the profile by gently

moving the measuring wheel along the rail
surface.

Step 4:

When the measuring wheel cannot go any

further on the rail edge, move it backwards a
couple of millimeters.

Step 5:

Drop the measuring arm, grab it again and move

the measuring wheel back along the rail surface
to measure the other side of the rail.

Step 6:

Keep moving the measuring wheel along the rail

surface and pass the starting point.

Step 7:

Keep moving the measuring wheel on the rail

surface to measure the second part of the
profile, until the arm cannot get any further on
the rail edge.

Step 8:

When the measuring wheel cannot get any

further out on the rail edge, move it backwards
a couple of millimeters to end the
measurement.
Version 1.0.9 Page 3 of 10

You can abort the measurement at any time by clicking on the “Abort” icon.

The screenshot shows an image of the preview of the profile in MiniProf Envision just before
moving the probe backward to finish the measurement.

8. Results
The result of the measurement will be presented as below. The reference profile will only be visible if selected before the start of the measurement.
The greyed out profile is the reference profile. Please note that the alarm status will only work if they are set up in the software. You can set up alarms
in the software by clicking on “Tools > Configure Measurement > Results” from the main menu.

Click “Accept” to finish and save the measurement or “Reject” to cancel the measurement and start over. You can also
take pictures before saving the measurement by clicking on the “Photo” icon.

The View icon can be used to choose between the two options, “Profile and reference” or “Profile alone”. You can also
choose to view the “Grinding graphs”.

9. Dismount instrument
Grab the telescopic rod and tip the instrument off the rail. Remove the telescopic rod from the instrument.

Pull the terminal cover back in order to unplug the cable. This will switch off the MiniProf system. Pulling the cable without
moving the terminal cover first will damage the cable.
Press the power button to turn off the instrument if connected with Bluetooth

10. Connect MiniProf BT Rail to a PDA

MiniProf BT instruments can be connected to a PDA device by using a MiniProf USB cable or Blue-
tooth connection. Connection by using the MiniProf USB cable is straight forward, by plugging the
cable into the PDA. Instrument will blink with green light when USB connection is established.
However, you will need to pair the instrument with your device in order to use the Bluetooth connection. Once the instrument is paired and turned on,
the software will automatically connect to it. Note, that maximum of two instruments can be paired with the PDA at any one time. You must remove a
device in order to pair a third device. See Appendix 3 & 4 of this guide for pairing and unpairing instructions respectively.
Version 1.0.9 Page 4 of 10

11. Single Measurement using PDA device

Press on “New Measurement” icon. Now fill out the information on the next screen and then press “Next”. Now start the measuring process. The
graphic will show tick marks when Inner and Outer encoders are initialized. Please see Section 6 of this guide for the complete measuring instructions.
The last of the below three screenshots show the results screen on the PDA software.

12. Scheme Measurement (tablet/laptop/PDA)

It is possible to perform a predefined sequence of measurements.

Tablet/laptop:
Click on the “Measurement” icon from the main menu and then click on “Scheme assisted measurement”. Choose your preferred scheme and click on
“Next”. Fill out the required data entries and click on “Next” to start measuring. After you have completed the first measurement, you will then
automatically continue to perform the next measurement in the sequence.

The screenshot shows that three measurements (2 red, 1 green) are completed and the
software is ready to perform the fourth measurement. The blue rail is the current active rail,
which will be measured next. The two red rails show that the measurements were completed
but one or more result values were out of limit, defined by the alarm settings. The green rail
shows that the measurement results were within the acceptable limits. The scheme
measurements can be resumed if the user decides not to perform all the measurements in one
working session. The software remembers how many measurements were completed and then the user can simply click
on the “Resume” button to continue the scheme at a later time.

PDA:
Similarly, you can perform scheme measurements in PDA as well. Click on “Measurement Scheme” from the main
menu of the PDA software and choose the desired scheme. Click “Next” to start the measurement. The screenshot
shows a wheel scheme measurement in progress where first rail is measured and is shown in green. The blue rail is the
current rail, which is ready to be measured.

13. Maintenance
Certain steps should to be followed in order to ensure correct measurements and optimal results.

Calibration: Depending on the intensity of usage and the environment in which the instrument is used we recommend that the MiniProf system is
returned to Greenwood Engineering within 12 months from last calibration date for a service check and re-calibration. When respecting the 12 month
interval, warranty on the instrument will increase up to 5 years, the lifetime of the instrument will be prolonged and the calibration price will be lower.
Furthermore, we recommend that the instrument calibration is verified locally once every month of use and after long periods of transport or storage.

Verification: A good way to verify if the calibration is in order is to perform control measurements on a known piece of rail. The control measurements
and the piece of rail can then be used as references for future verifications of the MiniProf accuracy. The known piece of rail should be new or re-
profiled. The reference measurements and the later control measurements should be made on approximately the same place on the dedicated piece
of rail. The maximum difference between the reference measurement and the control measurements depends on the requirements set forth by the
user/owner of the MiniProf system. A verification block can be purchased if needed.

Cleaning and general care: The MiniProf instrument and cables should be cleaned after use by using a mild solvent and a cloth. Do not clean the
instrument with corrosive chemicals or any liquids that might enter the instrument. Do not clean with metal brushes, steel wool or other abrasive
means, which may scratch the surface. The instrument is capable of withstanding single drops of water, but it is not splash-proof.

Charging: The instrument’s battery should be only charged in an environment which has a temperature between 0°C to 45°C.
