Gear Meshing Terms Notes

The document outlines essential gear meshing terms in mechanical engineering, including definitions and examples for concepts such as pitch circle, addendum, dedendum, and backlash. It provides formulas for calculating circular pitch and module, as well as details on tooth thickness and pressure angle. These terms are fundamental for understanding gear design and functionality.

Gear Meshing Terms - Basic Mechanical Engineering

1. Pitch Circle: Imaginary circle that rolls without slipping with a pitch circle of another gear.

Example: T=40, P=4 -> D=10 inches

2. Addendum: Distance from pitch circle to tooth tip.

Example: Outer radius - pitch radius = 2 mm

3. Dedendum: Distance from pitch circle to tooth root.

Example: Pitch radius - root radius = 2 mm

4. Clearance: Difference between dedendum of one gear and addendum of the mating gear.

5. Working Depth: Addendum of Gear 1 + Addendum of Gear 2.

6. Whole Depth: Addendum + Dedendum.

7. Tooth Thickness: Measured along pitch circle; half the circular pitch.

8. Circular Pitch: Distance between similar points on adjacent teeth along pitch circle.

Formula: pi × D / T

9. Module: D / T (Unit: mm)

10. Backlash: Small gap between mating teeth.

11. Face Width: Width of the gear tooth along axis.

12. Base Circle: Circle from which involute profile is generated.

13. Pressure Angle: Angle between line of action and tangent to pitch circle (usually 20° or 14.5°).
