- The Runoff Coefficient C for roofs ranges from 0.75 to 0.95 as per Table 8 . Therefore, the
considered coefficient is C = 0.95
- The Rainfall intensity (I) is according to DM Guideline DS185, Section 5.1, Table 5 considering
rainfall intensity 92.28 mm/hr for 5 years return period and 5 minuntes duration
- The rain water discharge pipe size is determined using Wyly-Eaton's equation
QRWP = (2.5 X 10-4)(Kb-0.167)(di2.667)(f1.667) according to BS EN 12056-3, Section 6.1.1
where
QRWP is the capacity of the pipe (l/s)
Kb is pipe roughness (mm)
di is the internal diameter of the rainwater pipe (mm)
f is the filling degree, defined as the proportion of cross-section filled with water.
The pipe roughness for uPVC/GRP is 0.0015. However, as per the BS EN 12056-3, Section 6.1.1,
the pipe roughness (Kb) is considered to be 0.25.
The filling degree (f) is considered 0.30 to be on the conservative side.
Based on these values, the rain water flow and pipe is summarized herein below

5.4.1 Hydraulic Calculation of Drain Trench
From Table 5.1, the maximum drainage flow is due to fire fighting event
Manning equation is used to calculate the velocity (V) and flow (Q) in the trench.
Vf = (1/n) R2/3 S1/2
Where,
n = Mannings coeffisient for pipe = 0.015 for smooth lined concrete
R = Hydraulic radius (m)
S = Slope of the pipe (m/m)
Hydraulic radius R = Aw / Pw
= 0.5 y / ( 0.5 + 2y)
Velocity at the end of the drain V = (1/n) * (R)2/3 * (S)1/2 = 0.833 m/s > 0.75 m/s
Flow at the end of the drain Q = Aw * V = 0.1042 m3/s > 0.0725 m3/s
5. CALCULATION SHEET
From Table 5.1, the maximum drainage flow is due to fire fighting event = 261 m3/hr
Each side of dry well has two down pipes
Maximum drainage flow to down pipes = 261 m3/hr = 72.5 l/s
