Assign02 - Permeable Slab

Permeable concrete slabs are porous surfaces that allow water to pass through, offering benefits such as reduced runoff, pollutant filtration, groundwater replenishment, and reduced flooding. They are composed of coarse aggregates, cement, and water, and can be used in various applications like driveways and pedestrian walkways. The document also outlines a methodology for designing permeable pavements to meet specific loading and drainage requirements.

Assignment 02: PERMEABLE SLAB

A permeable concrete slab is a porous concrete surface that allows water to pass through it and into the
ground. It's also known as pervious concrete or porous pavement.

Benefits of permeable concrete

• Reduces runoff
Permeable concrete reduces the amount of water that runs off into streams and rivers.
• Filters pollutants
The water that passes through permeable concrete is filtered as it soaks into the ground.
• Replenishes groundwater
Permeable concrete allows water to seep into the ground, which helps replenish groundwater supplies.
• Reduces flooding
Permeable concrete prevents puddles and flooding by allowing water to soak into the ground.
• Reduces heat island effect
Permeable concrete reflects the sun's rays, which helps keep the surrounding area cooler.
• Eco-friendly
Permeable concrete is an eco-friendly material that provides nutrients to plants.

Composition of permeable concrete

• Permeable concrete is made of coarse aggregates, cement, and water.
• It has a network of interconnected voids that allow water to pass through.

Uses of permeable concrete

• Permeable concrete can be used for driveways, pavements, and pedestrian walkways.

Examples of permeable concrete slabs

1. Permeable interlocking concrete pavement (PICP)

Individual concrete blocks that are laid in an interlocking pattern. The spaces between the blocks
can be filled with grass or small stones.
2. Resin-bound paving
A mixture of resin and aggregate that can be used in areas with pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
3. Permeable concrete block paving
Concrete blocks that are designed to reduce flooding and enhance drainage. They can be used
in commercial areas, such as retail spaces and pedestrian walkways.

Other types of permeable pavements

• Porous asphalt
• Plastic grid pavers
• Porous turf
• Permeable clay brick pavers
• Open graded aggregates
• Soft paving materials like wood mulch
Permeable concrete slabs are a key component of green infrastructure initiatives. They can help reduce the
need for road salt and air conditioning, and can also filter pollutants out of water.

Methodology
The proposed methodology combines structural and hydrological design guidelines to develop an
integrated approach for permeable pavements including CRP. The method determines the thickness of the
foundation and pavement slab (Fig. 1), to satisfy a particular set of loading and drainage requirements.
