Steps for Substituting a Value in for a Variable
Step 1
Identify the values of the variable(s).
Step 2
Rewrite the expression, replacing the variable(s) with the value.
Step 3
Follow the order of operations to evaluate.
Associative Property of Addition
The associative property of addition says that the grouping of terms does not change the
answer when evaluating addition.
(a+b)+c=a+(b+c)
(5+3)+4=5+(3+4)
Associative Property of Multiplication
The associative property of multiplication says that the grouping of terms in a product does not
change the answer when multiplying.
(a·b)·c=a·(b·c)
(5·3)·4=5·(3·4)
Notice that the parentheses show how the terms are grouped and indicate which sum or product
should be performed first. The associative properties allow you to move the parentheses of the
expression to meet your needs while maintaining equality.
Commutative Property of Addition
The commutative property of addition says that the order of the terms being added to form a
sum does not change the answer when adding.
a+b=b+a
6+9=9+6
Commutative Property of Multiplication
The commutative property of multiplication says that the order of the terms being multiplied to
form a product does not change the answer when multiplying.
ab=ba
6(9)=(9)6
The commutative properties allow you to change the order in a sum or product in an expression
without changing the value of the expression.
The distributive property helps you find the product of a number and a sum or
difference. It says that any number multiplied by a sum or difference of two or more
numbers is equal to the sum or difference of the products.
Distributive Property (with a sum):
a(b+c)= a∙b +a∙c3(2+4)= 3∙2+3∙4
Distributive Property (with a difference):
a(b−c)= a∙b −a∙c3(2−4)= 3∙2−3∙4
The property allows you to rewrite a product as a sum or difference without changing
the value of the expression.
In order to apply the distributive property, a factor must be multiplied by a sum or
difference. You cannot use the distributive property on algebraic expressions that
contain only one operation.
3(4·5·6)≠3(4)·3(5)·3(6)
Also, the distributive property does not work when dividing a quantity by a sum or
difference.
