LOADING CALCULATIONS OR LOADLINE PROBLEMS

1. A ship of deadweight capacities 8940 tons(winter),9335 tons
(summer)and 9378 tons(tropical) to load a full cargo of grain in Bahia
Blanca for Kobe via cape town and Miri. After discharging at Kobe , she is
to proceed in ballast to prince Rupert. From the information given below
find the maximum amount of cargo she can load at Bahia Blanca and
what bunkers should be taken there and at cape town and Miri
respectively , with the intention of leaving Kobe with the maximum
possible amount.

Bahia Blanca to Cape Town -10 ½ days-summer zone throughout.


Cape town to Miri-16 days -summer- tropical in that order
Miri to Kobe-8 days -tropical for the first 1 ½ days, then summer
Daily consumption-diesel oil 16 tons, water 10 tons (ignore port consumption).
Fuel prices per ton-pound 340 Bahia Blanca, pound 335 Cape town, pound 306
Miri, pound 329 Kobe.
Maximum diesel oil capacity-850 tons.
Reserve of oil and fuel to be 5 days supply at all times of sailing.
Allowance for stores etc., consumed –Bahia Blanca to Cape Town -15 tons
- Cape Town to miri-22 tons
Allowance for stores etc., replenished - Cape Town-36 tons, Miri-24 tons
Provisions and stores (not incl. water) on board at Bahia Blanca amount
to 128 tons.

2. From the given data calculate the weight of Cargo a vessel can load at
Montreal, if she is to sail for Glasgow at about midnight of 9 th October. Length -
98.2m, Breadth -12.3 m, Summer draft-6.24m,Block Co-efficient 0.79, TPC- 10,
Light displacement-1727 tons. The vessel Consumes 14 tons of fuel oil and 6
tons of water, per day. On board at Montreal are 310 tons of fuel, 80 tons of
water, and 10 tons of stores. She will be in North Atlantic Winter seasonal
zone I when the winter season commenced at 0000,16 th October(R.D of sea
water – 1.025)

Note:- Since the vessel is less than 100mtrs in length and will be in the
North Atlantic winter seasonal zone I when the winter season
commences at 0000 hrs. on 16th October, the minimum permitted free
board then will be WNA freeboard which is 50mm (5cm) greater than
the winter freeboard. The winter freeboard is 1/48 of the summer draft
greater than the summer freeboard.
3 A vessel has summer deadweight of 24562 MT (Summer Draft 10.56 M, TPC 25
MT). Her daily consumption of fuel oil is 25 MT and fresh water I l MT. She is loading
at Campana Bay, Chile for Le Havre, France. As per the company's instructions, the
vessel is to maintain 2 days of reserve of fuel oil and 4 days of reserve of fresh water
at all times at sea. Prior departure Campana Bay, the vessel had fuel oil 415 MT and
fresh water 190 MT. The vessel will bunker en-route at Panama.Calculate the
maximum amount of cargo to load at Campana Bay and the fuel oil, fresh water to be
taken at Panama to complete the voyage if,

a) Campana Bay to Panama - Tropical Zone - 9 days


b) Panama to Seasonal Tropical Area - Tropical - 3 days
c) Seasonal Tropical Area to Seasonal Winter Zone - Summer - 8 days
d) Seasonal Winter Zone to I,e Havre - Winter - 9 days

4 A ships tropical, summer and winter deadweight capacities are 10,286, 9,948
and 9,613 tonnes respectively. She is to load at Vancouver for London via
Panama Canal, Calling at Los Angeles and Curucao for fuel. On departure, she
will have on board 370 tons of fuel, 180 tons of water, and 12 tons of store.
She consumes 27 tons of fuel and 6 tons of water and stores daily.

Passages are estimated as follows:

Vancouver to Los Angeles - 4 'days - all summer.

Los Angeles to Panama Canal - 9 days - summer - tropical in that order

Panama canal to curucao -3 days -all tropical

Curucao to London - 12days tropical for 2 days, then Summer for 4 days, then
winter for 6 days.

Find the maximum weight of Cargo the Ship can lift at Vancouver, if She is to
maintain a reserve of 6 days fuel at all times. What quantities of fuel should
she take in at Los Angeles and Curucao?
5. A ship of l2,500 tons deadweight on a Summer draft of 8.66m and
TPC23.2 is to sail from Osaka for London on 1s t February via Singapore and
Cape. Her daily consumption of fuel and water is 32 tons. She is to load 420
tons of fuel at Singapore, 250 ton at Dakar and is to call at Colombo for 500
tons of cargo. Fuel, water and stores on board when leaving Osaka amount to
1,570 tons.

Passages are estimated to be: -

Osaka to Singapore : 7 days - summer, then tropical.

Singapore to Colombo : 4 1/2 days - tropical throughout

Colombo to Dakar:22 days -4 days tropical, then 11 ½ days Summer,


then 6 ½ days tropical.

Dakar to London : 8 days -2 ½ days tropical, then 2days Summer,


then 3 1/2 days in Winter Seasonal zone in Winter Season.

Find the maximum amount of cargo that can be loaded at Osaka.

6. A vessel Summer DWT 15,300 T ; Tropical DWT 15,800 T; Winter DWT


14,800 T is to load in Yokohama for Boston, calling at Singapore, Colombo and
Aden. The ship is to load 4,500 T of cargo at S’pore and 850 T of cargo at
Colombo. Oil fuel initially on board at Yokohama 372 T, daily consumption
48 T. Fresh Water initially on board 120T. daily consumption is 18 T. There are
to be 3 days reserve of oil fuel and fresh water at all times. Oil and FW to be
taken at Yokohama, S’pore, Colombo and Aden as required.

Yokohama to Singapore, Summer zone 10 days


S’pore to Colombo, Tropical zone, 6 days
Colombo to Aden, tropical zone ,6 days
Aden to Port Said, tropical zone, 5 days
Port Said to Boston, first 4 days summer, then 10 days winter.
Calculate the maximum amount of cargo to load at Yokohama and also the oil
fuel and fresh water to take at the various ports.
7. A ship, summer DWT 92546 t on 13.44m draft and TPC 46 is loading at
Dalian (china) for Europort, bunkering at S’pore and Capetown. ROBs at Dalian
FO/620 t (daily consumption 42 t at sea), FW/210 t (daily consumption 12 t) &
stores 82 t constant 524 t. Five days reserve of fuel and fresh water are to be
maintained at all times at sea (Ignore port consumption).

1500 t of cargo is to be loaded at Colombo.

Passages/Zones are estimated to be:


Dalian to S’pore ( 8 days) : Summer 3 days, rest in tropical
S’pore to Colombo ( 6 days) : Tropical
Colombo to Capetown (17 days) : 3 days Tropical then 10 days in Seasonal
Tropical area – Summer & the rest in
Seasonal Tropical area – Tropical.

Capetown to Europort ( 16 days) : 2.5 days Tropical, then 3 days in Summer,


then 4.5 days in Seasonal Winter Zone in
Winter & the rest in Winter zone.

Find the maximum cargo that can be loaded at Dalian, and what additional
quantity of cargo, if any, can be lifted from Capetown if just the required
amount of bunkers were to be taken at S’pore and Capetown.

8. A V/L of Summer Displ. 55240T ; winter Displ.53650 T proceeds on a voyage


from S’pore to Rotterdam. She is to take in bunkers H.O: 560T D.O: 42T at
Suez.

S’pore- Suez 15 days - Summer

Suez – Gib. 8 days – Summer

Gib- Rot 6 days- Winter zone

No draft limitation at any port. Bunker cons. 40 T/day H.O , at sea. 3T/day
port, cons. Negligible Fw gen. consumption is assumed same. If the Vessel
has H.O 700 T D.O 50T and FW 15T on dep. S’pore and const. and Lt ship is
estimated as 10240T. Find the max cargo loadable.
9. A bulk carrier (Summer DWT 88,500t, Winter DWT 87,750t, Tropical DWT

89,250t), daily F.O. consumption 45t & FW 14t. She is chartered for voyage
from Odessa to Sakai (Japan) via Suez to load iron ore at Marmugao (India) for
Sakai (Japan), taking fuel oil and F.W. at Aden (minimum quantity) & at
Singapore (FWrequired quantity & maximum fuel oil possible). She is also
required to load 9 containers at Singapore, each weighing 28 tons for Hong
Kong.

Odessa to Port Said: 4 days

Suez to Aden: 6 days

Aden to Marmugao: 5 days

Marmugao to Singapore: 9 days-3 days in summer & rest in Tropical

Singapore to Hong Kong: 8 days-1 days in Tropical 2 days In Seasonal Tropical


in winter months & Rest in summer zone.

Hong Kong to Sakai: 3 days-1 days in Summer & rest Winter.

ROB at Odessa FO/ 848t, FW/ 293t & Stores/ 180t. Estimated consumption for
Suez Canal Transit FO/ 50t & FW/ 40t. Ignore all port consumptions. Allow 2
days fuel and F.W. reserves at all times at sea. Find the amount of cargo to
load at Marmugao & fuel oil /F.W. to be taken on board at Aden & Singapore.

10. A ship's tropical ,summer and winter DWT capacities are 11536, 11198
and 10863 tonnes respectively. She is to load at Seattle for Rotterdam via the
Panama canal, calling at Long Beach and Curacao for fuel. On departure she
will have on board 370 tonnes of fuel, 170 tonnes of water and 22 tonnes of
stores. She consumes 27tonnes of fuel and 6 tonnes of water and stores daily.

Passages are estimated as follows:

Seattle to Long Beach: 4 days-all summer

Long Beach to Panama Canal - 3 days-summer, then 6 days-tropical

Panama Canal to Curacao: 3 days-all tropical

Curacao to Rotterdam 2 days-tropical, then 4 days-summer, then 6 days-winter


Find the maximum weight of cargo the ship can lift at Seattle if she is to
maintain a reserve of 6 days fuel at all times. What quantities of fuel should
she take in Long Beach and Curacao respectively, if fuel prices are lower at
Curacao.
