Problems On Unit 4

The document outlines problems related to various thermodynamic cycles including the Otto cycle, Diesel cycle, Rankine cycle, and Brayton cycle. It provides specific parameters for engines and turbines, requiring calculations for efficiency, mean effective pressure, work done, and other performance metrics. Each problem includes initial conditions and asks for detailed results based on thermodynamic principles.

Unit IV Vapour and Gas Power Cycles

1. A four stroke engine working on Otto cycle has a volume of 0.5 m 3, pressure 1 bar
and temperature 270C at the commencement of compression stroke. At the end of
compression stroke, the pressure is 10 bar. For 200 kJ of heat addition, determine i)
percentage clearance, ii) air standard efficiency, iii) mean effective pressure and ideal
power developed by the engine if the engine runs at 400 rpm.
2. An engine with 250 mm cylinder diameter and 300 mm stroke with a compression
ratio of 18 works on theoretical diesel cycle. The initial pressure and temperatures are
1 bar and 300 C. The cut-off is 10% of the stroke. Determine i) the pressure and
temperature at all the salient points of the cycle, ii) air standard efficiency, iii) mean
effective pressure, iv) work done/cycle, v) power of the engine if the working cycles
per minute are 400.
3. A steam boiler generates steam at 30 bar, 300 0 C. The steam is expanded
isentropically in a steam turbine to a condenser pressure of 0.05 bar, condensed at
constant pressure and pumped back to the boiler. Draw the T-s diagram of Rankine
cycle. Determine, per kg of steam, i) the heat supplied in the boiler, ii) the quality of
the steam after expansion, iii) the work done by the turbine and iv) Rankine
efficiency. Neglect the pump work.
4. In a gas turbine plant working on Brayton cycle, the air at inlet is 270C, 0.1 MPa, The
pressure ratio is 6.25 and the maximum temperature is 800 0 C. Per kg of air, find the
compressor work, turbine work, heat supplied, thermal efficiency and turbine exhaust
temperature.
