Distribution automation functions
Electrical system automation: Energy management systems (EMS) and distribution
management systems (DMS).
EMS functional scope: The EMS is based on two main subsystems, supervisory control
and data acquisition (SCADA) and network analysis (multiple remote terminal unit
(RTU) protocols in a non-proprietary environment, load shed, sequence switching
management, and disturbance storage and analysis).
The network analysis applications offer the possibility of obtaining power flow, state
estimation, contingency analysis, short circuit, security enhancement, optimal power
flow, and Volt/VAR dispatch information.
Functionality of DMS: The functionality of DMS can be divided into steady-state performance
improvement and dynamic performance improvement.
Steady-state performance improvement
- Volt/VAR control
- Feeder reconfiguration
- Demand side management (DSM)
- Advanced metering infrastructure (AMI)/automatic meter reading (AMR)
-
Dynamic performance improvement
- Fault location, isolation, and service restoration (FLISR)
- Trouble call system: which requires a close relationship with the customer information
system (CIS).
- Alarm triggering: Alarms are triggered by the operation of the protection relays. They send
coded information to distribution control centers so that operators are aware of what is
happening on the network.
- Work orders
Geographic information system (GIS)
- Automated mapping/facility management (AM/FM)
- Database management
Communication options
DMS may employ a variety of communication mediums such as cooper wires, fiber optics, VHF and
UHF radio, satellites, microwaves, cellular communications, Wi-Fi, and WiMAX. Rapid advances in
wireless, cellular, and satellite systems will soon provide cost-effective solutions for enterprise
connectivity.
