Chapter 3-Matrices (Part 2)

Chapter 3 of the document focuses on matrices, discussing concepts such as the rank of a matrix, determinants, and Cramer's Rule for solving systems of linear equations. It includes problems, solutions, and homework assignments related to eigenvalues, eigenvectors, and diagonalization of matrices. The chapter aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of matrix operations and their applications in physics.

Chapter 3: Matrices
It is clearly seen that the determinants
of square sub-matrices of orders 1, 2, 3
are all non-singular.

The maximum order of the son-

singular square matrix A is 3. Hence,
the rank of the matrix A is 3.

Systems of Linear Equations: Determinants
This method for solving systems of linear equations; can
be used only when the number of equations equals the
number of variables. Although the method works for any
system (provided that the number of equations equals
the number of variables), it is most often used for
systems of two equations containing two variables or
three equations containing three variables. This method,
called Cramer’s Rule, is based on the concept of a
determinant.
