National Exam of Higher National Diploma – 2021
Specialty/Option: CWD
Paper: Drawing and Graphic Design
Nature of Paper: Practical
Duration: 4 hours
Coef: 6
SECTION 1: GRAPHIC DESIGN (50 marks)
1. 1. What is graphic design? (2mks)
Graphic design is the art and practice of planning and projecting ideas and experiences with
visual and textual content. It involves creating visual content to communicate messages
using elements such as typography, imagery, color, and layout.
2. 2. Give four (04) application domains of graphic design. (4mks)
1. Advertising (e.g., posters, flyers, billboards)
2. Branding (e.g., logos, business cards, brand identity)
3. Web and UI design (e.g., websites, mobile apps)
4. Publishing (e.g., magazines, books, newspapers)
3. 3. State and discuss any four (03) qualities of a good graphic designer. (6mks)
1. Creativity – Ability to think outside the box and come up with innovative visual concepts.
2. Communication Skills – Clearly conveying ideas visually and verbally.
3. Attention to Detail – Ensuring accuracy in design elements and layout.
4. 4. Discuss any two (02) advantages of using vector graphics in graphic design. (4mks)
1. Scalability – Vectors can be resized without losing quality.
2. Editability – Easy to edit individual elements without distortion.
5. 5. Give any four (04) raster image file formats of your choice. (4mks)
1. JPEG (.jpg)
2. PNG (.png)
3. GIF (.gif)
4. TIFF (.tif)
6. 6. According to you, which color mode (RGB or CMYK) is suitable for printing purpose?
Justify your answer. (2mks)
CMYK is suitable for printing because it uses the four ink colors (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and
Black) that printers use to produce full-color images on paper.
7. 7. What is the difference between a primary and secondary color? (3mks)
Primary colors are the base colors that cannot be created by mixing other colors (Red, Blue,
Yellow).
Secondary colors are formed by mixing two primary colors (e.g., Red + Blue = Purple).
8. 8. Using Adobe Illustrator / Adobe Photoshop, design one of the following logos. Choose
between logo 1 or logo 2. (25mks)
This is a practical question. You are required to recreate or redesign Logo 1 or Logo 2 using
Illustrator or Photoshop. You’ll be marked based on creativity, accuracy, alignment,
typography, and color use.
SECTION 2: ANIMATION (50 marks)
1. Define the following terms or expressions: (1mk x 4)
• Keyframe: A frame that defines the starting and ending points of any smooth transition.
• Tweening: The process of generating intermediate frames between two keyframes.
• Storyboard: A sequence of drawings representing the shots planned for an animation or
movie.
• Frame Rate: The number of frames displayed per second in animation (fps).
SECTION 2: ANIMATION (Continued)
9. 1. Define the following terms or expressions: (1mk x 4)
a. Graphic animation: Animation that uses graphic images or artwork (such as drawings or
digital illustrations) to create motion.
b. Frame rate: The number of frames (images) displayed per second in animation. It
determines the smoothness of the motion.
c. Rendering: The process of generating the final output of an animation or image from a 2D
or 3D model.
d. Morphing: A special effect in animation where one image gradually changes into another.
10. 2. State and discuss any 2 application areas of graphics animation. (4mks)
1. Entertainment – Used in movies, cartoons, and video games to create characters, scenes,
and effects.
2. Education – Helps in creating animated tutorials, simulations, and explainer videos to
enhance learning experiences.
11. 3. Give two (02) softwares used for computer animation. (2mks)
1. Adobe Animate
2. Blender
12. 4. Name any three (03) animation techniques. (3mks)
1. 2D Animation
2. 3D Animation
3. Stop Motion Animation
13. 5. What is a keyframe as far as graphics animation is concerned? (2mks)
A keyframe is a specific frame in an animation where a change occurs. It defines the start
and end points of any smooth transition.
14. 6. What is tweening in graphics animation? (2mks)
Tweening (short for in-betweening) is the process of generating intermediate frames
between two keyframes to create the illusion of movement.
15. 7. Explain the following principles of animation: (2mks x 4)
a. Exaggeration – Enhancing actions or expressions to make the animation more dynamic
and expressive.
b. Follow Through – Parts of the body or objects continue to move after the main action has
stopped.
c. Timing – Refers to the number of frames dedicated to an action, affecting speed and
weight.
d. Overlap – Different parts of a character or object move at different rates, adding realism.
16. 8. Using Adobe Animate, create an animated GIF showing the ball moving at the four
sides of the scene. (25mks)
Practical Task:
- Animate the ball following the diamond-shaped trajectory shown.
- Apply squash and stretch when the ball hits or changes direction.
- Use keyframes at each major point.
- Apply tweening between keyframes for smooth motion.
- Maintain consistent timing to create natural-looking movement.
