I. Introduction

In an era where digital platforms play a pivotal role in travel planning, many travelers
turn to the internet to discover new destinations and experiences. While major tourist spots
are well-represented online, smaller towns like MacArthur in Leyte often lack comprehensive
digital presence, making it challenging for visitors to access reliable information. To bridge
this gap, we propose the development of "Visit MacArthur," a dedicated website aimed at
showcasing the rich history, cultural heritage, and natural attractions of MacArthur, Leyte.
This platform will serve as an informative guide for tourists and newcomers, offering insights
into local landmarks, accommodations, events, and activities.

By providing accessible and up-to-date information, "Visit MacArthur" seeks to

enhance the visitor experience, promote sustainable tourism, and support the local economy.
Through this initiative, we aim to bring greater visibility to MacArthur's unique offerings and
foster a deeper appreciation for its role in the broader tapestry of Philippine history and
culture.

2
II. SCOPE AND OBJECTIVE
A. Scope of Observation

This project centers on evaluating and enhancing the design and functionality of the
"Visit MacArthur" website, a platform dedicated to promoting tourism in MacArthur, Leyte.
The observation focuses on the website's homepage and its primary sections, including
Attractions, Accommodations, Local Events, and Cultural Heritage. The aim is to identify
areas for improvement in visual appeal, user navigation, and overall user experience.

Key performance metrics such as loading speed, responsiveness across various devices, and
accessibility standards will be assessed to ensure the website meets current web development
best practices. The observation will also examine the consistency of design elements, clarity
of information presented, and the intuitiveness of the site's navigation structure.

B. Objective of Observation

The primary objective of this observation study is to evaluate and enhance the user
experience of the "Visit MacArthur" website, ensuring it effectively serves tourists and
newcomers exploring MacArthur, Leyte. By systematically analyzing user interactions and
website performance, we aim to identify areas for improvement that align with current web
usability standards.

The specific objectives are as follows:

1. Assess Homepage Design and Navigation Flow

Evaluate the clarity and intuitiveness of the homepage layout, ensuring that users can
easily access key information and navigate to various sections without confusion.

2. Evaluate Sectional Content and Functionality

Examine each major section of the website—such as Attractions, Accommodations,
Local Events, and Cultural Heritage—for content relevance, visual appeal, and
functional effectiveness in conveying information to users.

3. Measure Website Performance Metrics

Analyze technical aspects including loading speed, responsiveness across different
devices, and accessibility compliance to ensure optimal performance and user

3
satisfaction.

4. Identify Design Inconsistencies and Navigation Issues

Detects any inconsistencies in design elements and potential navigation challenges
that may hinder user experience, aiming to create a cohesive and user-friendly
interface.

IV. Methodology

GTmetrix is a tool designed to analyze and monitor website performance. It provides

insights into how fast a website loads, identifies issues that might be slowing it down, and
offers recommendations for optimization. This tool is a huge help in our case study/research
because it speeds up the identification of how or what the performance of a website is. In just
one click, you can see the results of a website without any hassle, like quickly getting the
structured data, performance, and everything about the website. In GTmetrix, LCP (Largest
Contentful Paint), TBT (Total Blocking Time), and CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) are key
Web Vitals metrics used to measure a website’s performance and user experience. LCP
(Largest Contentful Paint) measures how long it takes for the largest visible content element,
such as an image or text block, to fully load. It is used to determine how fast users can see
meaningful content on a page. A lower LCP means faster loading times and better user
experience. FCP (First Contentful paint) in GTmetrix measures how quickly the first piece of
content appears on a webpage, impacting user experience and SEO. A faster FCP makes a
site feel more responsive and improves rankings. To optimize it, reduce render-blocking
resources, use fast hosting, enable caching and CDN, and optimize images and fonts. TBT
(Total Blocking Time) calculates the total time a page is unresponsive due to long running
JavaScript tasks that block user interactions. It helps measure how responsive a website is,
with lower TBT values indicating smoother interactions and faster interactivity. CLS
(Cumulative Layout Shift) evaluates how much content unexpectedly shifts during page load.
It is used to measure visual stability, ensuring that users don’t experience sudden layout
movements that can cause frustration, such as buttons shifting when clicked. These metrics
help developers and website owners optimize their site’s performance, leading to faster load
times, better interactivity, and improved user experience.

7
V. Limitation of the Project

The website does not include a login or user account feature, which limits personalized
experiences such as saving itineraries, posting reviews, or accessing user-specific content.
Other limitations include the absence of user feedback or review systems and limited
multilingual support. The current version is also dependent on stable internet access, which
may be a constraint in some areas.

VI. Description of the Project

Visit MacArthur is a tourism-focused web application designed to promote the

municipality of MacArthur in Leyte, Philippines. The project aims to boost local tourism by
showcasing the town's rich historical significance and natural beauty under the theme
“Where History Lives and Nature Thrives.”

The website serves as a digital gateway for travelers, offering detailed information on how to
plan a trip, explore local destinations, engage in adventures, appreciate the region's cultural
heritage, and discover nearby resorts. With visually captivating imagery and user-friendly
navigation, the platform enhances the travel planning experience while promoting sustainable
and community-based tourism.

8
VII. Observation

Visual design

The website exhibits a clean and professional look with a well-balanced color scheme and
typography. The use of imagery is relevant to the medical industry, enhancing credibility and
engagement. However, some areas could benefit from more visually distinct call-to-action
buttons for better user engagement.

Navigation

The website's menu is clear and well-organized, allowing users to access information
efficiently, though some links could be more prominent to enhance discoverability. Adding a
breadcrumb navigation feature could further improve usability for users navigating deep
pages.

Content

The website provides informative and relevant content with clear descriptions of services and
facilities. Some pages contain large blocks of text that could be broken down for better
readability. Adding a search functionality could enhance user experience by allowing quick
access to specific information.

Functionality

Interactive elements, including forms and buttons, function correctly without noticeable
errors. Contact forms appear to be working properly, but additional confirmation messages
after submission could improve clarity. Multimedia elements (images and videos) load
efficiently without significant delays.

Performance

According to GTmetrix, the website has a performance grade of B with the performance of
83% and the structure score of 96%. Web vitals metrics are as the follows:

Largest Content Paint (LCP): 1.9s

Total Blocking Time (TBT): 49ms

9
Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): 0

Fast loading times enhance user experience, and the website is responsive across different
devices.

10
Design Tools Used:

● Wireframing: Figma
● Development: HTML, CSS, and Java Language
● Testing: GTmetrix for performance, device testing for responsiveness

Design Principles Followed:

● Consistency: Colors and fonts are consistent with tourism themes.

● Accessibility: High-contrast text, readable fonts, and alt-text for images were
considered.
● Responsiveness: Layouts were tested across common screen sizes for mobile
friendliness.

11
VIII. Findings And Recommendations

Findings:

● The website achieves strong performance and visual appeal.

● Minor usability issues exist in navigation and text formatting.
● Performance metrics (LCP, TBT, CLS) indicate a smooth user experience.

Recommendations:

1. Improve Call-to-Action Buttons: Make them more prominent with brighter colors
and hover effects.
2. Add Breadcrumb Navigation: This will help users know where they are on the site.
3. Break Down Text Blocks: Improve readability by using bullet points and shorter
paragraphs.
4. Implement Search Feature: To help users find specific content quickly.
5. Add User Interaction Features: Like review or feedback sections in future versions.
