Q) Discuss in detail how can Data science and Data analytics be applied to
your programmer’s major subject (Food Nutrition and Dietetics)
Discuss some current applications to support your answers.
Ans-
Data science is a multidisciplinary field that focuses on extracting insights,
patterns, and knowledge from structured and unstructured data using techniques
from mathematics, statistics, computer science, and domain expertise.it is used in
predictive analytics (e.g., forecasting sales, customer behavior), Natural Language
Processing (e.g., chatbots, sentiment analysis), Computer vision (e.g., facial
recognition, image classification).
o Wearable devices – Smartwatches, glucose monitors and fitness trackers
collect real time personalized health data, this data can be used by the
consumer to reflect on his/her physical, metabolic fitness and as well serve
to plan diet.
o Data science helps analyze microbiome data to suggest personalized diets
for better digestion and immune system..
o Disease prevention – Ai models predict risks of chronic diseases like
obesity, diabetes, CVD based on the individuals eating habits.
AI powered apps used image recognition feature to
track food intake and measure calories consumption, this is a revolutionary
feature for those individuals who are unable to reflect on their dietary
intakes and would promote a disciplined eating lifestyle.
❖ Current Application
✔ MyFitnessPal uses AI to analyze user diets and provide nutritional
insights. It mentions of tracking calories and macros with barcode
scanner. It provides user with personalized nutrition insights revealing
what works for them and what not. It further aims to help user achieve
healthy eating goals.
✔ Beat0 is a digital platform that provides diabetes care program. Their
Beat0 glucometer is clinically approved and can be used by user while at
home, The user is asked to prick and place a blood drop on the strip, then
strip is to be inserted into Beat0 device which is connected to the
smartphone, and the app shows the blood sugar levels.
Data analytics is the process of analyzing raw data to extract actionable insights,
often for decision-making and business operations. It’s applications include
Performance tracking (e.g., sales metrics, website traffic analysis), Operational
optimization (e.g., reducing costs, improving efficiency), Customer segmentation
and targeting.
o In the ever-evolving landscape of nutrition, data analytics emerges as a
transformative force, unraveling the intricate connections between dietary
choices and health outcomes.
o Dietary Assessment – Data analysis unveils food consumption pattern,
revealing nutritional intake, deficiencies, and guiding personalized dietary
recommendations.
o Clinical trials and studies – Researchers use data to assess the impact of
nutritional interventions, examining how specific modifications can trigger a
change.
o Public health surveys – Large amount of data is collected through surveys
which helps us to study population nutritional status. Through data analysis,
we identify trends in deficiencies.
o Monitoring nutritional interventions – In research based and clinical
backgrounds, it is necessary to monitor every bit of data to study
modification and effectiveness of interventions.
o Predictive analytics - Through predictive analytics, dietary patterns can be
linked to potential health outcomes, enabling the early identification of risk
factors and informing proactive, preventive healthcare strategies."
❖ Current application
✔ National Family Health Survey (NFHS) is a prominent health survey in
India conducted by MoHFW currently in its fifth round, provides data on
population, health, nutrition across country, including at the state and district
levels.
✔ Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana is a public health care
insurance that aims to provide free access to health insurance coverage for
low income earners.
✔ COVAXIN phase III study to evaluate the efficacy, safety and
immunogenicity of the vaccine was conducted on 25,800 volunteer
participants. The efficacy data demonstrates 63% protection against
asymptomatic covid 19.
