Driven by a deep-rooted interest in Biomedical science and a strong desire to make a
meaningful impact on patient care, I am thrilled about the possibility of contributing my
scientific expertise to the NHS community. Throughout my work experience, I have come to
appreciate the profound impact that healthcare professionals have on the lives of their
patients. This, coupled with my passion for biomedical science, strengthened my motivation
to pursue a career as a clinical scientist where I can use my knowledge and skills to benefit
patients.
Currently, as a Biomedical Support worker in an ISO 15189-accredited laboratory, I play a key
role in supporting the delivery of a professional, high-quality diagnostic service. My duties
involve preparing patient samples for diagnostic testing while ensuring adherence to strict
standard operating procedures (SOPs). I assist Biomedical Scientists by performing pre-
analytical tasks, organizing workflow, and solving basic problems in the designated area,
escalating more complex issues to senior staff as necessary. I am responsible for maintaining
accurate documentation, both physical and electronic, as part of the department's Quality
Management System (QMS). This includes contributing to audit data collection as required. I
also ensure the lab is well-stocked by monitoring and replenishing consumables, minimizing
disruption to laboratory operations. In addition to my technical responsibilities, I actively
support training and onboarding for new Biomedical Support Workers. I consistently
promote effective communication within the team and with external stakeholders, such as
clinicians and GPs, ensuring a positive and professional image of the department. Working
with biological materials, including blood and urine samples, I strictly adhere to health and
safety protocols, contributing to a safe and compliant working environment.
During my specialised training in venipuncture, which included hands-on experience with
human volunteers, I further improved my active listening skills. This experience has
strengthened my appreciation for the value of effective communication in alleviating patient
anxiety and fostering a positive relationship to provide a safe space for patients. I learned to
approach each situation with compassion and empathy while considering and being discreet
about a patient’s history. Providing the best possible services to individuals seeking care is
my strongest desire. Thus, I always strive for feedback and constructive criticism, which are
necessary for constant improvement and learning.
