Title:
Study of Frequency Modulation and Demodulation using Simulink (MATLAB)
Abstract:
This experiment is designed to
1. To understand the use of Simulink for solving communication engineering
problems.
2. To develop an understanding of Frequency Modulation and Demodulation
using Simulink.
Introduction :
Modulation is essential in communication systems, allowing the transmission
of signals over different mediums. Amplitude Modulation (AM) was the first
modulation technique introduced, where the amplitude of a high-frequency
carrier wave is varied according to the message signal. While AM is simple
and bandwidth-efficient, it faces challenges such as high amplifier costs,
poor noise performance during low signal periods, and limited bandwidth,
making it less ideal for modern applications.
Angle modulation techniques were developed to improve upon AM, including
phase modulation (PM) and frequency modulation (FM). FM, commonly used
in everyday applications like FM radio, varies the carrier frequency
proportionately to the message signal, offering superior noise resistance and
better signal quality.
In FM, the modulated signal is expressed as S(t)=A c cos(2πfct+Kf ∫m(λ)dλ),
where Ac is the carrier amplitude and Kf is the frequency deviation constant.
The bandwidth of an FM signal can be determined using Carson’s rule: B t
=2W(1+D), where W is the message signal's bandwidth, and DDD is the
frequency deviation. FM's noise resistance and signal fidelity advantages
make it widely used in modern communication systems.

Discussion and Conclusion:
In this experiment, we implemented modulation & demodulation using
Simulink with the help of block diagrams. We used sine signal blocks but
converted them too cos signal by changing phase to 90 wherever needed.
The block diagrams were designed properly and modulated signal was
retrieved. Later, we used the modulated signal from the modulation
simulation & passed to through the transfer function twice to retrieve the
original message signal through demodulation. So, we can say the goals of
this experiment were successfully achieved.
