How much of the Earth is desert?

A third of the Earth’s land is desert. Every year, deserts grow larger. When
trees are cut down, and large farms are built and too many goats, sheep
and cows eat the grass, the land gets worn out. The soil washes away. The
land turns into desert. When land turns into desert, people can no longer
grow food and need to leave their homes.

Here are the continents where each of these deserts is located:

1. Atacama Desert – South America
2. Sahara Desert – Africa
3. Antarctic Desert – Antarctica
4. Sonoran Desert – North America
5. Gobi Desert – Asia
a. The largest hot desert in the world is the Sahara Desert, covering
approximately 9.2 million square kilometers across North Africa.

b. The largest cold desert is the Antarctic Desert, spanning around

14.2 million square kilometers, making it the largest desert overall.

c. The tallest cactus is the Cardón cactus (Pachycereus pringlei),

which can grow over 60 feet tall. It is native to northwestern
Mexico, but the Saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea), found in the
Sonoran Desert, is the tallest cactus in the United States, reaching up
to 40 feet.

d. The Atacama Desert is significantly drier than the Sonoran Desert.
Some areas of the Atacama receive less than 1 millimeter of
precipitation annually, making it the driest non-polar desert in the
world.

e. The Gobi Desert is colder in winter than the Sahara Desert. While
the Sahara experiences extreme heat during the day and can drop
below freezing at night, the Gobi Desert has harsh winters, with
temperatures falling well below freezing, sometimes reaching -40°C
(-40°F).
