Ce - 302, Signal Lecture

The document outlines a signal design problem for a transportation engineering course, detailing the traffic flow and saturation rates for various phases at an intersection in Karachi. It includes calculations for optimum signal cycle time using Webster's method and presents a signal timing diagram. The document is structured with figures illustrating traffic phases and provides specific traffic volume and saturation flow rate data for analysis.

Q: Calculate the saturation flow rate for headway in accordance with Highway Capacity Manual (HCM),
for effective green headway? vehicles per hour green per lane(vphgpl)

Q: The saturation flow rates (vphgpl) of all the phases are given in the table, the volume of traffic (Vol) along
with its phases were also observed. Using Webster's method of traffic signal design determine optimum signal
cycle time, Co corresponding to minimum total delay to all the vehicles at the approach roads of the
intersection. Also draw the signal Timing Diagram.

Where,
C = optimum cycle Length
L = Lost time = (Amber time, sec + Red Time, sec) * No. of phases
Y = Sum of the Critical Flow Ratio
