Method Statement for Secant Pile Wall

Construction (450 mm Diameter)

1. Scope
This method statement outlines the construction procedure for a secant pile wall composed
of alternating dummy (plain) piles and RCC (reinforced) piles for a total length of 180 m,
depth of 15.0 m, with 150 mm overlap/interlock between piles.

2. Materials & Specifications

Material Specification

RCC Pile Concrete M30 grade, machine mixed, as per IS 456

Dummy Pile Concrete M15 grade, nominal mix (1:2:4), as per IS

456

Reinforcement Steel Fe500 HYSD bars as per IS 1786

Main Reinforcement 16 mm dia, 8 nos per RCC pile, lap length

720 mm (45d)

Stiffener Rings 16 mm dia @ 1.5 m spacing

Helical Stirrups 8 mm dia spiral @ 150 mm pitch

PQC Slab M30 concrete, 600 mm wide x 300 mm

thick

3. Equipment
 - Rotary piling rig / CFA rig
 - Tremie pipe system
 - Rebar bending and cutting machines
 - Concrete pump / chute
 - Slurry tank (if applicable)
 - Transit mixers
4. Sequence of Work

4.1 Setting Out and Marking

 • Establish the secant pile wall centerline.
• Mark pile positions at 750 mm c/c spacing.
• Identify alternate dummy and RCC pile locations.

4.2 Drilling of Dummy Piles

 • Bore 450 mm dia holes to 15.0 m depth at alternate locations.
• Maintain verticality and prevent bore collapse.

4.3 Concreting Dummy Piles

 • Use M15 grade concrete.
• Pour by tremie or direct method to avoid segregation.
• Allow 48 to 72 hours for setting before drilling adjacent RCC piles.

4.4 Drilling RCC Piles

 • Drill next pile to 15.0 m depth with 150 mm total overlap (75 mm into each adjacent
dummy pile).
• Ensure proper alignment and interlock.

4.5 Reinforcement Placement

 • Insert prefabricated cage:
- 8 x 16 mm dia main bars
- 16 mm dia stiffener rings @ 1.5 m
- 8 mm dia helical stirrups @ 150 mm pitch
• Provide 50 mm cover using spacers.

4.6 Concreting RCC Piles

 • Use M30 concrete, placed by tremie continuously to avoid cold joints.
• Maintain level slightly above cut-off for trimming.

4.7 Pile Head Trimming and PQC Slab

 • Trim pile tops to designed level.
• Place 600 mm wide x 300 mm thick PQC slab (M30) on top for protection and load
distribution.

6. Quality Assurance
 • Conduct concrete slump and cube strength tests.
 • Check reinforcement spacing, dia, and cover.
 • Verify borehole verticality and pile overlap.
7. Safety Precautions
 • Barricade work zone and restrict entry.
 • Ensure PPE (helmet, gloves, boots) for all personnel.
 • Use only trained rig operators and certified electricians.
 • Keep a fire extinguisher and first-aid kit on site.

8. Pile Termination Criteria

8.1 Design Depth

 • Minimum pile depth: 15.0 m
• Tolerance: ±150 mm

8.2 SPT-Based Termination

 • Conduct SPT at or near pile toe level.
• If SPT N > 100, consider it as hard strata.
• Socket RCC pile a minimum of 1.0 to 1.5 m into the hard stratum.

8.3 Penetration per Revolution (PPR) — As per IRC:78-2014

 • If SPT is not possible, check PPR:
- Refusal is defined when PPR < 2 mm/rev for three successive readings.
- Continue drilling until this is achieved.
- Socket into hard strata (1.0 m min for weathered, 1.5–2.0 m for hard rock).

8.4 Cleaning Before Concreting

 • Remove loose soil/debris from bore bottom using chisel or airlift.
• Verify clean bottom with sounding rod.

8.5 Tolerances
 • Verticality: Max 1 in 100
• Location: Max 75 mm in plan position

9. Drawing Reference
 • Refer to attached Typical Section and Elevation showing dummy and RCC pile
configuration, overlap, reinforcement layout, and PQC slab.
