Features of Biography Writing
Basically, there are certain aspects that have to be considered or included
when writing a biography. Biographies ;
• Are written in 3rd person. Eg; He She, it, they their…
• Are written in past tense. Eg; was, were …
• Have life events in chronological order of Time
• Should have time connectives to show the chronological order of time.
[Time Connectives]
Structure of a Biography
As you have seen in the precious slides, there is a format for a Biography
that should be followed. Biographies should have;
1. A title
2. An Introduction
3. Body
4. conclusion.
I will explain what is expected in each section in the slides below.
THE TITLE
Name of Your Biography
INTRODUCTION
The introduction has to be catchy if you want to catch the attention of
the reader. You can choose to use a question as the opener. You should
ensure that, if your Biography is of a famous person then the introduction
should answer the 5W’s.
• Who is the person – Their name.
• What are they famous for?
• When did it happen?
• Where did it happen?
• Why are they famous today?
THE BODY
Before you write a biography about a person, you have to make sure you do
enough research about the person.
The body of the biography has important events in the person’s life. You
can include the person’s childhood or important aspects like their
academics if it played a role in making them who they are now.
The body usually has 2 paragraphs.
Ensure your paragraphs begin with a time connective to show the order of
events in the person’s life.
Examples of time connectives; First, then, Next, After, Finally, A while
later. Some other connectives that can be used include; Although, Even
though, Despite…
You can state about 2 events in each paragraph.
CONCLUSION
To conclude the biography, you should write about the impact they have on
people today. Your conclusion should answer the questions below.
• Have they taught us anything?
• Why will they always be remembered?
• Quote something someone said about them. “ “
We have come to the end of our lesson today.
What have we studied?
