Here are the basic rules of basketball, based on the standard rules followed by

FIBA (international), NBA, and most organized basketball leagues:

🏀 Basic Rules of Basketball


1. The Objective
 The goal is to score more points than the opposing team by shooting the ball
into the opponent’s hoop.
 Each team tries to defend its own hoop and score in the opponent’s hoop.

2. Team Composition
 Each team has 5 players on the court at a time.
 Substitutes can be made during stoppages in play.

3. Game Duration
 FIBA: 4 quarters of 10 minutes each
 NBA: 4 quarters of 12 minutes each
 Overtime is played if the score is tied at the end of regulation.

4. Starting the Game


 The game begins with a jump ball at center court.

5. Scoring
 Field goal (inside 3-point line): 2 points
 Field goal (beyond 3-point line): 3 points
 Free throw: 1 point

6. Shot Clock
 NBA: 24 seconds to attempt a shot
 FIBA: 24 seconds
 The team must shoot within the time limit, or it’s a shot clock violation.
7. Violations
 Traveling: Moving with the ball without dribbling.
 Double dribble: Starting a second dribble after stopping the first.
 Carrying/palming: Turning the ball over in your hand during a dribble.
 Backcourt violation: Returning the ball to the backcourt after it has crossed
into the frontcourt.
 3-second violation: An offensive player stays in the key (paint) for more
than 3 seconds.

8. Fouls
 Personal foul: Illegal physical contact (pushing, holding, hitting).
 Team fouls: After a certain number per quarter (e.g., 5 in NBA), the
opponent gets free throws.
 Shooting foul: If a foul is committed during a shot, free throws are awarded.
 Technical foul: Unsportsmanlike behavior, arguing with referees, etc.
 Flagrant foul: Excessive or violent contact.

9. Free Throws
 Awarded after certain fouls.
 The shooter takes unopposed shots from the free-throw line.

10. Possession Rules


 Jump ball: Used to start the game.
 Alternating possession: Used in FIBA to determine possession on held
balls.
 Out of bounds: Ball goes to the other team if it crosses the boundary lines.
