ASSIGNMENT -01
1. Describe the rankine cycle with the help of schematic , (T-S)
and (H-S) diagrams and derive the expression for it’s
efficiency.
2. Explain thermal power plant and also state the site selection
of the thermal power plant.
3. Define blade efficiency and hence, derive an expression for a
maximum blade efficiency for a single stage impulse steam
turbine
4. why is governing of steam turbine required?state the various
methods of governing of steam turbine and explain any one
of them in detail.
5. Derive an expression for maximum efficiency of parson’s
reaction turbine.
6. Derive the expression for net work done by the gas turbine
power plant. also state the condition for maximum work
done.
7. What is regeneration? How is improves the thermal efficiency
of a simple open gas turbine plant?
EXAMPLES
Q-1.a steam power plant working on rankine cycle has range of
operation from 40bar dry saturated to 0.05bar
Determine,
a. cycle efficiency
b. Work ratio
c. Specific steam consumption.
Q-2).steam issues from the nozzle of the de laval turbine with
velocity of 1200m/s.the nozzle angle is 20 •.the mean blade velocity is
400 m/s and inlet and outlet angle of blade are equal.the mass of
steam flowing through turbine per hour is 900kg. calculate-
i).Blade angles
ii).relative velocity of steam entering the blades.
iii).tangential forces on the blades.
iv).power developed
v).blade efficiency.
Assume that k=0.8
Q-3). In an oil fired gas turbine plant , air enters at 100kN/m 2 and
27•c and compressed to 450kN/m2. The maximum cycle temperature
is 600•c. the isentropic efficiencies of the compressor and turbine are
85% and 86% respectively.the calorific value of oil used is 42,000
KJ/Kg. the air flow rate is 2 kg/s. calculate-
i)air-fuel ratio
ii)power developed by plant
iii)thermal efficiency of the plant.
Take CP=1.005 kJ/kgk and γ =1.4 for air and CP=1.11kJ/kgk
and γ =1.33 for gases.
