Chart Formatting Guide

1. Formatting Charts

Use the Chart Tools (Design and Format tabs) to change chart styles, colors, and elements such as

gridlines, titles, and background.

2. Adding Chart Items

Click the '+' icon (Chart Elements) on the selected chart to add or remove elements like the chart

title, axis titles, data labels, gridlines, and legend.

3. Formatting All Text

Select any text element (titles, labels, legend), then right-click or use the ribbon to change font type,

size, color, and style (bold, italic).

4. Formatting and Aligning Numbers

Click on axis numbers and open the Format Axis pane. Set number type (decimal, currency,

percent) and alignment (horizontal, vertical).

5. Formatting the Plot Area

Click the plot area (inside the axes) and format the background color, border, and effects like

shadows or 3D styles.

6. Formatting Data Markers

Right-click data markers (bars, columns, points) to change color, size, shape, or apply gradients,

borders, or even custom images.

7. Pie Charts

Pie charts are best for showing percentages of a whole. Each slice represents a category's

proportion.

8. Creating a Pie Chart

1. Select your data (categories and values).


2. Go to Insert > Charts > Pie Chart.

3. Choose style (2-D Pie, 3-D Pie, Doughnut).

4. Add data labels and format slices using the Format options.
