III. READING (10 questions)

PASSAGE 1: Driverless Cars

A. For many years, robots have helped build cars, making production cheaper and more efficient.
Now, the next challenge in car technology is not how cars are made, but how they can drive
themselves.

B. Cars that can drive themselves, called "driverless cars," have been in development for over 50
years. Recently, technology has advanced quickly. One reason is safety. In the UK, research
shows that over 90% of accidents are caused by human mistakes. Driverless cars could help
reduce this.

Another benefit is that people could use their travel time for other things, like working or
relaxing, because the car would be driving itself. This would also help people who find it
difficult to drive, such as the elderly or disabled, to travel more easily.

C. Driverless cars could also affect how many cars are needed and used. Right now, most cars
are parked for 90% of the time. In the future, people could share driverless cars instead of
owning their own. This would be more convenient, especially in big cities.
D. Research shows that fewer cars would be needed if more people used shared driverless cars.
For example, in Singapore, studies show that only 30% of the cars on the road would be required
if people shared driverless cars. However, this would mean cars are used more often, and they
would need to be replaced more quickly.

E. Driverless cars may change how cars are designed. Instead of owning one car, people could
choose different cars for different trips. For example, a small car for city trips and a larger one
for family holidays.

F. There are still some challenges to solve. Driverless cars must work in all kinds of traffic and
weather conditions. There are also legal issues, such as who is responsible if a driverless car
crashes. People need to trust this new technology before it can be fully adopted.

G. Experts believe that driverless cars could be ready in the next 10 years. However, other new
technologies, like virtual reality, will also change the way we travel. Even though we don’t know
exactly how things will change, it's clear that the future of transport will look very different.
