DAILY DOSE: SIMPLIFIED LEARNING MATERIAL 2021-22

CLASS: 12th
SUBJECT: CHEMISTRY
UNIT NO: 02
CHAPTER NAME: SOLUTIONS
TOPIC: NCERT INTEXT QUESTION
(2.1 -2.5)

ASSIGNMENT NO: 03 CLASS: +2 SUBJECT: CHEMISTRY DATE: 17.05.2021

Q.2.1) Calculate the mass percentage of benzene (C6 H6) and carbon
tetrachloride (CCl4) if 22 g of benzene is dissolved in 122 g of carbon
tetrachloride.
Answer :-

Mass % of X=[Mass of X / Total Mass of mixture]×100

Given mass of benzene (C6 H6) = 22g

Given mass of CCl4 = 122g

Total Mass of mixture = 22+122=144g

Mass % of benzene = (22/ 144 ) ×100 =15.28%

Mass % of CCl4 = (122/144 )×100 =84.72%

ASSIGNMENT NO: 03 CLASS: +2 SUBJECT: CHEMISTRY DATE: 17.05.2021

Q.2.2) Calculate the mole fraction of benzene (C6 H6) in solution

containing 30% by mass in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4).
Answer:-

Mole fraction of component = no. of moles of component

Total no of moles of all components

Let total mass of solution= 100g

Mass of benzene= 30g

Mass of carbon tetrachloride= 100-30= 70g

Number of moles of benzene = given mass/ molecular mass

= 30 g / 78 g mol-1

= 0.385 mol

Number of moles of carbon tetrachloride=given mass/molecular mass

= 70g / 154 g mol-1

= 0.455 mol

Mole fraction of benzene = moles of benzene

(moles of benzene + moles of carbon tetrachloride)

= 0.385 mol / 0.840 mol

= 0.458

Q.2.3) Calculate the molarity of each of the following:

(a) 30g of Co(NO3)2. 6H2O in 4.3L of solution (b) 30mL of 0.5 M H2SO4
diluted to 500mL.

ASSIGNMENT NO: 03 CLASS: +2 SUBJECT: CHEMISTRY DATE: 17.05.2021

Answer:-

(a) Molarity = No. of moles of solute

Volume of solution(in L)

Given mass of Co(NO3 )2 .6H2O = 30g

Molar mass of Co(NO3 )2 .6H2O = 291g/mol

∴ No. of moles of Co(NO3 )2 .6H2O = 30g /291 g mol-1 = 0.103 mol

Volume of solution = 4.3 L

∴molarity = 0.103/4.3

=0.023 M

(b) Given Volume of H2SO4 (V1) = 30mL

Diluted volume of H2SO4 (V2) = 500mL

Molarity of H2SO4 (M1) = 0.5M

Final molarity (M2)=?

By using molarity equation, M1 V1 = M2 V2

0.5 x 30 = M2 x 500

M2 = 0.03 M

Q.2.4) Calculate the mass of urea NH2CONH2 required in making 2.5 kg of

0.25 molal aqueous solution .

Answer:-

0.25 molal aqueous solution of urea means that 0.25 mole of urea are present in 1
kg of water.

DAILY DOSE: SIMPLIFIED LEARNING MATERIAL 2021-22

ASSIGNMENT NO: 03 CLASS: +2 SUBJECT: CHEMISTRY DATE: 17.05.2021

Moles of urea = 0.25 mole

Mass of solvent (H2O) = 1 kg = 1000 g

Molar mass of urea (NH2CONH2 ) = 60 g mol-1

Mass of 0.25 mole of urea = 0.25 mol×60 g mol-1 = 15 g

Total mass of solution=1000+15g = 1015g = 1.015kg

1.015 kg of solution contain urea = 15g

2.5kg of solution will require urea = (15g/1.015)×2.5kg = 36.95 g

Q.2.5) Calculate (a) molality (b) molarity and (c) mole fraction of KI if the
density of 20% (mass/ mass) aqueous KI is 1.202 g mL-1 .

Answer:-

20% aqueous KI solution means that mass of KI =20g

Mass of solution= 100g

mass of water =100-20= 80g

(a) Molality = no. of moles of solute/ mass of solvent in kg

no. of moles of solute = given mass/ molecular mass

= 20/166 = 0.12 moles

Molality = (0.12/80) x1000= 1.5 m

(b) Molarity = no. of moles of solute/ volume of solution in L

Density of solution = 1.202 g/ml

Volume of solution = 100/1.202= 83.2 ml =0.0832 L
Molarity = 0.12moles/0.0832L = 1.44 M

DAILY DOSE: SIMPLIFIED LEARNING MATERIAL 2021-22

ASSIGNMENT NO: 03 CLASS: +2 SUBJECT: CHEMISTRY DATE: 17.05.2021

(c) no. of moles of KI = 0.12 moles

No. of moles of water = given mass/ molecular mass

=80/18=4.44 mol
Mole fraction of KI=no of moles of KI
(no of moles of KI +no of moles of water)
=0.12/(4.44+0.12)
= 0.12/4.56
= 0.0263
