37. The cramps occur when muscle cells respire anaerobically. The partial breakdown of glucose produces
lactic acid. The accumulation of lactic acid causes muscle cramps. We get relief from cramps after a
hot water bath or a massage. Hot water bath or massage improves circulation of blood. As a result, the
supply of oxygen to the muscle cells increases. The increase in the supply of oxygen results in the
complete breakdown of lactic acid into carbon dioxide and water.
a) Can muscle cells respire anaerobically?
b) Which substance causes muscle cramps during strenuous workout or any other hardcore training?
c) When is the demand of energy high in human body?
(OR)
How is lactic acid broken down?
38. The brown layer is formed when an iron article is left exposed in an open area.
a) Name the process.
b) What is its effect on the object?
c) Write the chemical equation for the process mentioned above.
(OR)
Why is the process mentioned above considered as a chemical change?
39. Some things feel hot when touched while others feel cold. So, our sense of touch tells us whether a
thing is hot or cold. But does it always give us accurate results? A reliable measure of the hotness of an
object is its temperature. Temperature is measured by a device called a thermometer. The
thermometer used to measure human body temperature is known as clinical thermometer. A clinical
thermometer is made up of a long and narrow glass tube. It has a special feature called a kink just
above the mercury bulb. This kink prevents immediate backflow of the mercury from the tube to the
bulb, thus allowing us to read the temperature conveniently. The normal body temperature of a
healthy person is 370C or 98.60 F.
a) Define temperature?
b) What is a clinical thermometer?
c) What is the use of kink in a clinical thermometer?
(OR)
Can a clinical thermometer be used to measure the temperature of boiling milk? Why?
