Aim
To investigate the equivalent resistance of two resistors when connected in series and in
parallel.
Apparatus Required
• Resistors (2 or more)
• Battery eliminator
• Ammeter
• Voltmeter
• Connecting wires
• Rheostat
• Switch
• Connecting board
Theory
**Series Combination:**
In a series circuit, the total resistance is the sum of the individual resistances.
Formula: R = R₁ + R₂
**Parallel Combination:**
In a parallel circuit, the reciprocal of the total resistance is equal to the sum of the
reciprocals of the individual resistances.
Formula: 1/R = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂

[Insert Parallel Circuit Diagram Here]
Procedure
1. Connect two resistors in series on a circuit board and note the current and voltage.
2. Repeat the same by connecting them in parallel.
3. Calculate the equivalent resistance in both cases using Ohm’s law.
Observations
Combination Type Voltage (V) Current (I) Resistance (R =
V/I)
Series 3.0 0.3 10 Ω
Parallel 3.0 0.6 5Ω
Result
• Equivalent resistance in series = R₁ + R₂
• Equivalent resistance in parallel = (R₁ × R₂) / (R₁ + R₂)
Conclusion
We observed that:
• In series, total resistance increases.
• In parallel, total resistance decreases.
This confirms the theoretical principles of resistor combinations.
