Observation:
The Most Obvious: Observe the author, audience, type of literature, main events, main characters, historical context and main
places for the book overview.
Less Obvious: Observe the key repeated words and phrases, lists, interpersonal interactions, contextual meaning of words or
phrases for the chapter study.
Everywhere in the Bible: Observe the word or phrase wherever it occurs in Scripture, its range of meaning and its immediate
context for word studies and cross-references.
Observe (rather than merely read): hy, When, Where and How.
Interpretation:
Consider Literature Type: Is it Law, Prophecy, Poetry, Proverb, History, Gospel account, or Epistle (letter). Are there different

Genesis: Beginnings (A Book Overview)
Author/Audience: God inspired Moses to write it to the people of Israel just before their entrance into the promised land.

Toledoh (tow-led-aw) is the Hebrew word rendered account or generations
depending on the English translation used. This Hebrew word means descent,

ancestor but about his
descendants. For instance,
the accounts of the lines of
Terah, of Isaac, and of Jacob
