Section 1

The document provides an overview of transportation engineering, defining it as the application of technology and scientific principles for the planning and management of transportation facilities. It outlines various modes of transportation, the urban transportation planning process, and the components of traffic engineering. Additionally, it discusses highway and airport engineering, including geometric and structural design, as well as classifications of roads based on location, number of lanes, and function.

Definition of Transportation Engineering ‫تعريف هندسة النقل‬

Transportation Engineering is the application of technology and scientific principles to the planning,
functional design, operation and management of facilities for any mode of transportation in order to provide
safe, efficient, rapid, comfortable, convenient, economical, and environmentally compatible movement of
people and goods.

2. Traffic Engineering
As defined in the Traffic Engineering Handbook of the ITE (Institute of Transportation Engineers), "traffic engineering is the phase of transportation
engineering which deals with planning, geometric design, and traffic operations of roads, streets, and highways, their networks, terminals, adjacent
lands, and relationships with other modes of transportation."

Road Classifications
1 According to Location:
a) Urban: inside the city

b) Rural: between cities

c) Sub-urban: on the city boundaries

2 According to Number of Lanes:

a)Two-lane-two-way: small traffic volumes (<1500 veh/hr). · Travel directions separated by pavement marking.

b) Divided multi-lane: lane capacity 1500-2000 veh/hr . Travel directions separated by physical barriers (e.g. new
jersey barriers).

3 According to Function:
1.Local
• lowest class , serves residential areas, parking is usually allowed, low speed limit.

2.Collector
• Collecting traffic from the local roads and transfer it to higher-degree roads.

3.Arterial
• Secondary arterials : wide cross-section, parking could be allowed.
• Primary arterials: wider cross-section, higher speed limit ,parking is strictly prohibited, at-grade intersections are not
favorable.

4.Freeways
• there is no intersection and it has free speed up to the max design speed.
