SOLVING PROBLEM INVOLVING ARC LENGTH
In the figure, 𝑂 is the centre of a circle of radius 8 m.
The points 𝑃 and 𝑅 lie on the circumference of the circle and 𝑂𝑃𝑄 is a straight line.
Given that ∠𝑄𝑂𝑅 = 36.9° and 𝑂𝑅 is perpendicular to 𝑄𝑅, find the perimeter of the
shaded region 𝑃𝑄𝑅.

In the diagram, 𝐴𝐵𝐶𝐷 is a trapezium in which 𝐴𝐷 is parallel to 𝐵𝐶, 𝐴𝐷 = 7 cm,
𝐵𝐶 = 10 cm and ∠𝐴𝐷𝐶 = ∠𝐵𝐶𝐷 = 90°. 𝑃 is a point on 𝐴𝐵.
(i) Show that ∠𝐵𝐴𝐷 = 100.2°, correct to 1 decimal place.

RADIAN MEASURE MATHEMATICS 9
RADIAN MEASURE
Other than using degree, we can also use another measurement called “RADIAN”
(Abbreviation: Rad) for measuring an angle.
1 (one) radian is the size of the angle subtended by the centre of a circle by an
arc equal in length to the radius of the circle.

𝜽
If 𝑠 = 𝑟, then 𝜃 = 1 rad
RADIAN MEASURE
We know that 1 full rotation of a circle is 360°
The circumference of a circle is 2𝜋𝑟
If it is a full circle, the size of 𝜃 will be
2𝜋𝑟
2𝑟 𝜃= = 2𝜋 rad
2𝜋𝑟 𝑟
Therefore,
2𝜋 rad = 360°
RADIAN MEASURE
Since 𝝅 𝐫𝐚𝐝 = 𝟏𝟖𝟎°, then
180°
1 rad = = 57.3° (to 1 d.p.)

1° = = 0.0175 rad (to 3 s.f.)
