Course Description
Over the past years, researchers and professionals have increasingly turned to GIS for acquiring,
processing, analyzing and mapping environmental and socio-economic data. This course covers
advanced topics in understanding and using GIS. Advanced GIS will cover a wide range of
modelling applications using raster, including watershed drainage analysis, ecological corridors
and least cost path analysis. Students will also be introduced to analytical tools such as spatial
data interpolation techniques, point pattern and density analysis, and error assessment. Hands-
on experience will be provided through weekly labs and final project.
Expected outcome:
Students completing advance Geographic Information Systems with Lab will be able to:
Describe how GIS practitioners typically use GIS as a tool for analysis and the display of
quantitative data to solve problems
Use and understand Network Analyst
Understand the key stages and distinct challenges in the creation, use and maintenance
of a GIS, paying particular attention to the unique structure of spatial information
(topology), the issues associated with its storage, the role of metadata and the quality of
data;
Understand and appreciate the scope and usefulness of GIS for real world applications;
Recognise and describe the ethical responsibilities of the communication of geographic
information;
Demonstrate an understanding of spatial information by identifying and applying
appropriate GIS techniques to the solution of practical applications.
Course structure:
The course is delivered via a series of lectures and computer practical time. The course will be
presented in lecture and lab format. Students are expected to attend classes and labs and to read
the assigned material. Students are also expected to participate in class through class quizzes
and discussions.
The format of the course will be lecture, class discussion, projects/assignments, on-line
activities, teaching methods including lectures, discussion groups, student presentations, lab
assignments, reading assignments, and two exams
Methods of Evaluation
Lab exercises (2) 20%
Mid-term exam 20%
Final exam 20%
Project work with presentation (40%)
Mandatory course requirements
There are no mandatory requirements. Students must achieve a passing grade to pass the course.
Prerequisites
Completion of the Principle of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) course
Required materials:
The required software are ArcGIS 10 and above version (including the Spatial Analyst, 3D
Analyst, Network Analyst, and Geostatistical Analyst extensions) and include other extensions.
In addition, to take full advantage of the course resources, each student should have
access to a computer with an Internet connection and have access to the following
software: Microsoft Internet Explorer, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Microsoft Word, Microsoft
Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint. Students will need a USB storage drive for this class with at
least 4 GB of storage
