CONCEPTUAL PARADIGM

This research study entitled, “Understanding the Economic Impact of Floods Among
Disadvantaged Households in Barangay Almacen, Hermosa, Bataan”, objectifies the intricate
relationship between flood occurrence and its economic impacts on the key informants. The
aim of this study is to assess and understand the economic impacts that the disadvantaged
group experiences during and after the occurrence of flood within Barangay Almacen—the
research locale.
On the basis of the Statement of the Problem of this study, a conceptual framework
was formulated that guided the researchers to evaluate this. An Input-Process-Output Model
was used to visualize how data flows through the research process. In addition, in a study
conducted by Maccuspie R. et al. (2014), it is shown that Input-Process-Output (IPO) Model
allows researchers to systematically examine the relationships between various factors and
their resulting impacts.

This qualitative case study uses the Input–Process–Output (IPO) Paradigm to develop
a structured approach for examining the multidirectional influences on the experiences of
flooded disadvantaged households in Barangay Almacen. The IPO paradigm specifically
supports research exploration through clear definition of core components starting from
contextual and demographic inputs and processing data collection methods to producing
findings and practical applications.
Thus, the inputs in this study consist of basic data and contextual elements that serve
as research foundations. The demographic information of interview of key informants
determines the essential characteristics of households affected by flooding. The key
informants’ age distinctions between generations highlight different vulnerabilities, and their
employment situation shows the economic stability of their households. The size of each
household proves essential because bigger families tend to experience greater financial stress
when floods strike. Households' financial standing depends directly on their flooding
exposure assessments since these assessments show both flood frequency and severity. In
addition, the income of households’ functions as an input factor affecting flood damage
coping ability since lower income households generally possess fewer economic resources to
overcome flood damages.
The process employs research procedures which convert input data into refined
findings through monitoring methods and analytical steps. Qualitative data collection
methods represent the main data acquisition technique in this research. Research interviews
with members of barangay officials and residents involved in flood experiences will help
understand both the flooding impacts and the associated economic difficulties. Common
difficulties faced by disadvantaged households will be discovered through face-to-face
interview which gather the personal experiences of multiple households about floodings and
its economic impact. Supplementary information will be gathered through document analysis
along with observation methods to deliver an expanded understanding of the situation
through evaluation of previous interventions and disaster preparedness records and
community responses. The collected data will go through thematic analysis which will reveal
essential patterns regarding economic challenges and coping strategies along with adaptation
measures and long-term recovery initiatives from local and other providing agencies. The
analysis aims to uncover short-term as well as long-term flood reactions while detecting
variables affecting these reactions.
Lastly, the research output includes the final conclusions drawn from the study as the
researcher solves the research questions. The research investigation will analyze economic
setbacks afflicting disadvantaged households by tracing their actual experiences. The
examination will investigate both of the key informants coping mechanism along with its
adaptation strategies which households employ to address economic consequences and
whether these modifications affect their livelihood systems or their way of living. The
research will analyze the recovery programs and intervention measures that Barangay
Almacen has established together with emergency aid distributions alongside infrastructure
development initiatives and government support initiatives. The research will use its findings
to propose policies that enhance disaster strategies and economic resilience therefore
supporting communities during subsequent flooding events.
