1. Introduction
Tourism consists of the trips and activities that people
undertake in their places of destination. Tourism has
several definitions that have been elaborated and become
increasingly comprehensive as studies about this
displacement activity have advanced. One of the most used
is the one proposed by the World Tourism Organization
(WTO), a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN).
The organization defines tourism as a phenomenon of
social, cultural and economic aspects directly related to
the displacement of people to places outside their personal
environment, whether it is a nearby location or even
another country. These people are called visitors, a
5
nomenclature that includes tourists and day-trippers,
residents or non-residents.
6
2. What Is Tourism?
“Tourism is a set of activities that involve the
movement of people from one place to another,
whether domestic or international”.
Tourists are considered to be the people who leave their
country or region for a trip to visit another country, state
or region for a period not exceeding twelve months without
the main intention being to develop a paid activity.
3. Types of Tourism
The division of tourist activity into different classes can
be done through the intention of displacement, that is,
based on the reason that led the person or a group to leave
their home towards another city, state or country. Based
on this criterion, tourism can be characterized as:
● Leisure tourism: associated with fun, leisure and
entertainment.
● Business Tourism: aims to establish business or
commercial links with other individuals, companies,
industries and associations. It includes trips made to
close agreements, contracts and agreements,
negotiations, work meetings, establishment of
partnerships, or even various purchases and
acquisitions.
● Religious Tourism: it is the peregrination of
believers to places considered sacred or that hold
some important meaning for their faith.
● Cultural tourism: there are some definitions of this
type in particular. One of them associates it with the
arts and contact with various artistic expressions and
establishments (museums, cultural events,
concerts, exhibitions, theatres).
● Rural tourism: is a type of tourism carried out in
rural areas, where tourists have contact with
activities carried out on farms, where routine
activities in the countryside are carried out, such as
contact with animals, equestrian activities, fishing,
typical food, etc.
4. History of Tourism
7
Thinking of tourism as the displacement of people with a
specific purpose, it is ‘’not possible to define an exact
origin’' of this activity. The literature dedicated to the
subject indicates that its history begins a millennium
before the current era, in Ancient Egypt, with trips that
had as their purpose the participation in events, religious
issues, fun and relaxation as well as the expansion of
knowledge.
There are same motivations caused by large
displacements of people in Ancient Greece. the difference
of this civilization was the realization
of the first Olympic Game, which served as an attraction
for an intense flow of tourists.
Many other civilizations, contemporary or not, have
recorded tourist trips with varied causes, related to health,
well-being and religion. In addition, the importance
of commercial exchanges in the great
displacements in various historical periods is highlighted.
Over time, the advancement of techniques for locating in
space allowed the improvement of navigation
and long-distance travel. The Industrial Revolutions and
the development of railways, as well as other means of
transport, were of great importance for the expansion of
the scale of tourism.
Thomas Cook is credited with pioneering travel
agencies. The Englishman began his activities in the
nineteenth century, and is considered the father of modern
tourism. In 1867 he invented the voucher, a document
that allows the use in hotels of certain services contracted
and advertised through a travel agency.
5. Tourism in the World
Tourism activities has showed great growth from
the middle of the twentieth century, especially with the
advent of globalization and the improvement of transport
and communication technologies, which provided more
efficient travel and an almost immediate connection with
various parts of the planet.
8
6. Importance of Tourism
Tourism is a bridge between different worlds, a window
to the new, and a mirror that reflects our own
transformation as we explore the unknown. It teaches us
about the beauty of diversity, about the importance of
conservation, and about the power of shared human
experience. In an increasingly connected but also divided
world, tourism stands out as a vehicle for unity,
understanding and mutual respect. May we continue to
travel, not just to see different places, but to see the world
through different eyes, enriching our soul and weaving the
tapestry of humanity with the colorful lines of our journeys.
7. Tourism in Angola
Tourism in Angola is an emerging sector, rich with
potential, but it is still developing due to factors like
infrastructure, political history, and safety concerns.
However, the country offers unique attractions for those
willing to explore beyond the usual tourist destinations.
Key Tourist Attractions in Angola:
1. Luanda:
The Capital City: Luanda, Angola's capital, is a
lively urban hub on the Atlantic coast, blending
colonial architecture with modern skyscrapers.
You can explore the bustling markets, visit the
Fortaleza de São Miguel (a 16th-century
fortress), and enjoy the city’s vibrant nightlife.
Praia do Litoral: A popular beach area in
Luanda, ideal for relaxing by the ocean.
2. Kalandula Falls:
Located in the north of Angola, Kalandula Falls
is one of the largest waterfalls in Africa,
dropping 105 meters. It’s an incredible sight to
see, surrounded by lush landscapes and
accessible via a scenic drive.
3. The Skeleton Coast:
9
The Skeleton Coast National Park on the
Atlantic coast offers a rugged, isolated beauty
with shipwrecks, dunes, and wildlife. It’s known
for its eerie landscape, but also its rich marine
life, including seals and migratory birds.
4. Namibe Desert:
Angola shares part of the Namib Desert with
Namibia, known for its massive sand dunes,
particularly in the Tombua area. These dunes
create surreal, breathtaking landscapes perfect
for adventurous travelers.
8. Importance of tourism in Angola
Tourism in Angola has significant potential for economic,
social, cultural, and environmental development. While it
remains an emerging sector, tourism holds crucial
importance for the country, especially given its diverse
natural landscapes, cultural heritage, and historical
significance. Here's a detailed breakdown of the
importance of tourism in Angola:
8.1 Cultural Preservation and Promotion
Showcasing Cultural Heritage: Angola is home to a
rich tapestry of cultural traditions, from music and
dance to art. Tourism provides a platform for local
cultures to be showcased to the world. By visiting
cultural sites, tourists contribute to the preservation
of Angola’s unique history and cultural traditions.
8.2 Social Development and Community
Empowerment
Improving Standards of Living: Tourism has the
potential to improve the living standards of local
communities by creating jobs and improving access to
basic services like healthcare, education, and
sanitation in tourist areas.
9. Advantage and disadvantage of tourism
10
While tourism brings numerous benefits, it also comes
with a range of potential disadvantages and challenges. If
not properly managed, tourism can lead to negative
environmental, economic, and social impacts. Here are
some of the main advantages and disadvantage of tourism:
Advantages of tourism are:
● Tourism promotes international understanding
the tourism sector can promote international
understanding by bringing people from different
cultures together and promoting mutual respect and
understanding.
● Cultural exchange Tourism also provides many
countries with opportunities for cultural exchange, as
tourists and locals interact and share their customs
and traditions.
● Tourism industry development Tourism can also
lead to the development of the tourism industry,
which can create hotels and places to stay, jobs, and
economic opportunities in a destination.
Disadvantage of tourism are:
● deterioration of the environment, the erosion of
local cultural identities and the increase in the cost of
living for the receiving communities.
● Cultural Erosion and Loss of Identity: Tourism can
lead to the commercialization of local culture, where
traditions, customs, and rituals are altered or staged
for the benefit of tourists. This can lead to the loss of
authenticity and a dilution of cultural heritage.
10. Conclusion
11
Tourism is much more than just a leisure activity; it’s an
industry that drives economic growth, fosters cultural
exchange, supports environmental conservation, and
promotes global understanding. While it can also bring
challenges, such as over-tourism and environmental
degradation, when managed responsibly, tourism has the
power to enhance lives, enrich societies, and contribute to
a more interconnected world. In a globalized and
increasingly digital age, tourism will continue to evolve and
play an even more important role in shaping the future.
