Problem Set: Angle of Elevation and

Depression
Name: _________________________ Score: _____/15
Course/Year: BSED Math 1 Topic: Trigonometry – Applications of Angles

Instructions:
Solve each problem clearly and completely. Show solutions.

Part I: Average Level (10 points – 1 pt each)

1. A 15-meter ladder leans against a wall, forming a 60° angle with the ground. How high
does the ladder reach on the wall?

2. From a point 30 meters away from a tower, the angle of elevation to the top is 45°. Find
the height of the tower.

3. A tree casts a shadow 12 meters long. If the sun’s angle of elevation is 30°, find the height
of the tree.

4. A kite is flying at a height of 50 meters. If the string makes an angle of 40° with the
ground, find the length of the string.

5. A person on the ground looks up at a balloon at an angle of 60°. If the balloon is 80 m

high, how far is the person from the base of the balloon?

6. A 5-meter flagpole is mounted on a building. From a point 40 meters away, the angle of
elevation to the top of the flagpole is 35°, and to the top of the building is 30°. Find the
height of the building.

7. From a ship at sea, the angle of depression to the base of a cliff is 20°. If the cliff is 40 m
tall, how far is the ship from the base?

8. A person standing on top of a hill sees a boat at an angle of depression of 15°. If the hill is
25 m high, how far is the boat from the base of the hill?

9. A firewatcher sees smoke from a fire at a 35° angle of depression. If the watchtower is 60
meters high, how far is the fire from the base?

10. A camera on a drone is pointed downward at an angle of depression of 70°. If the drone
is flying 120 meters high, how far away is the object on the ground?
Part II: Difficult Level (5 points – 1 pt each)
11. From two points 100 m apart, the angle of elevation to the top of a tower is 30° and 45°,
respectively. Find the height of the tower.

12. A surveyor stands on a hilltop 50 m high and measures an angle of depression of 25° to a
car on the road. How far is the car from the base of the hill?

13. A drone is hovering. From two locations on level ground, 150 meters apart, the angles of
elevation are 60° and 45°. Find the height of the drone.

14. A person on a balcony sees the base of a tree at a 30° angle of depression and the top at
10° angle of elevation. The person is 10 meters above ground. Find the height of the tree.

15. A building casts a shadow of 25 meters when the sun is at a 28° angle of elevation. Find
the height of the building.
