Study Guide On Demographic Study

This study guide focuses on the importance of demography in urban planning, emphasizing that population data is crucial for determining land use and service needs. The module aims to equip learners with basic demographic concepts, computation skills, and analytical abilities related to population data. Activities include watching presentations, exploring guidebook chapters, and completing a quiz based on assigned local government units.

Module 7 – Demographic Study

Introduction
The United Nations defines demography as the “scientific study of the human
population primarily with respect to size, structure and development” (HLURB, 2014,
p. 171). But why do planners have to learn about demography, considering that it is
viewed as a field of its own? In fact, the University of the Philippines offers a Master’s
degree in demography in the Diliman campus.

The answer to the previous question is simple: population is tagged as the most critical
information for planning (Serote, 2008). It dictates the level of needs for certain land
uses, services, and facilities. Considering its significance in the planning practice,
planners should have a working knowledge of the basic concepts of demography that
can guide plan formulation.

Learning Objective
By the end of the module, you should be able to:
1. Discuss the basic population concepts;
2. Perform basic computations related to population composition, distribution, and
projection; and
3. Provide an analysis of the computed population data in relation to urban and
regional planning.

Study Guide

You should perform the following:

1. Watch the video presentations or browse the shared slides of your FIC about
Basic Demography Concepts for Urban Planners.
2. Browse the chapter on demographic study in the HLURB’s (2014) CLUP
Guidebook Volume 2. The chapter is on pages 171 to 231 for longer
discussions of concepts and more examples.
3. Explore the demographic study matrix provided by the Department of Human
Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) that summarizes the data
needed for ecological profiling in preparation for CLUP formulation. Most of the

data needed for the matrix can be gathered from the Philippine Statistics
Authority’s website. The index table indicates which information can be
computed using the data readily available from the PSA website and which will
require the data from the LGU.
4. Accomplish the quiz on the demographic study using the LGU that will be
assigned to you. Your FICs will provide detailed instructions for this activity in
a separate posting.
