Introduction to Magick
Overview
What do I do now?
A word on safety- It goes without saying, that you are dealing with fire and when not carefully
monitored, can cause substantial damage. Please use sound judgment when working with fire.
There are several other words that you may hear when referring to spells. These words include but
are not limited to work, rootwork, conjuring, hex, mojo, sorcery, witchery, and prayer. In this book, you
may see me use spells, magick, and workings interchangeably.
Intentions are what the worker desires as the outcome of the workings. When it comes to intentions,
you must be extremely clear as well as careful in your desired results. Combining too many intentions
can confuse. Being unclear may cause your candle to become confused. Therefore, your result will
be unclear or your spell may not work. Below are simple questions on how to create a perfectly
balanced intention:
What is your intention? Did you use words like "and, "while", "but", "nor", "yet", "so", "for"
(conjunctions)? If so, your intention may be either 1. Be too complicated 2. Needs to be broken down
into separate intentions. 3. Combined into one without a conjunction. If you aren't able to simplify the
intention, then you may need to do step work. Step work is creating multiple steps for your workings.
In other words, you'll need to do one part before the other. When you separate the spells, follow the
steps accordingly:
● 2nd - Cleansing any remaining energy from the blocking, crossing, or hexing
● 3rd- The desired result
The following example uses these steps: You desire your ex-partner to return to you. You have no
means of communication with them. You both ended on bad terms. You got into a heated argument
and your ex stated they do not want to see or hear from you again and has blocked your phone
number and blocked you on social media. Your ex is also in a new relationship. Their mother also
hates you and has a huge influence on your ex. How should you perform the spell?
● Do a cleansing candle
● Burn Separation candles to remove or separate the influence of the current partner and mother
Does it involve other people? If so, how many people are involved in this work? If you have multiple
people involved, do you all desire the same outcome? If not, you'll need to create separate works, or
depending on the situation, you'll need to do step work.
Can you live with this intention with no regret? If yes, great! If not, you'll need to reframe, or express
your intention differently. Or avoid continuing the work.
Do you believe your intention can and/or will come to fruition? If not, stop here and ask yourself why?
Most times it's because we worry too much about "how" it will play out. But remember this is why
you're doing the work! The why is: So that the powers that be, can sort out the how part. Your job is
simply to do the workings and believe it will be.
This type of work is very easy for beginners to do especially because it isn't tied to one particular
religion or spiritual path. Just about anyone can do it with belief! Candle Magick is highly effective
because once you set your intention into the candle and the flame, it starts working immediately. The
element of fire has been revered, studied, feared, and respected for thousands of years. When you
bring the element of fire to a candle, you're incorporating much more into the working: air to fan the
flame, wax melting as flowing water, and solid wax as the solid earth. Once all join together, you've
got yourself a powerful tool!
Candle Colors
The color of the candle isn't as important as the intention. Many of our ancestors used what they
could. Oftentimes it was white candles or even candles made of animal fat. Through the years as
Magick progressed, Magick began incorporating color as what I believe was a result of melding. The
combination of psychology, emotions, astrology, and the feeling of energy behind the color. With this,
many people started associating colors with desired outcomes, resulting in more and more people
using colors. In this book, you'll find spells calling for certain colors. You'll note below that some
intentions are duplicated among different colors. This is because colors can have multiple outcomes.
If you are not able to find the needed colors, go with white.
● Red- Passion, Sexual, Will Power, Strength, Fertility, Lust, Bravery, Luck, Confidence, Fiery
● Pink- Friendship, Intimacy, Platonic Love, Self Love, Unconditional Love, Romance, Affection,
Femininity
● Orange- Energy, Uplifting, Friendship, Joy, Thoughtfulness, Break mental blocks, Simulation,
Self Control, Enthusiasm, Creativity
● Yellow- Vitality, Focus, New Ideas, Manifestation, Attraction, Magnetism, Identity, Life
● Blue- Communication, Clarity, Truth, Wisdom, Tranquility, Dreams, Health, Loyalty, Patience
● Brown- Grounding, Stability, Justice, Court, Healing, Emotional balance, Earth, Death
● Multi-color candles- You will find that some candles are made with two or more colors. These
types of candles are considered double or triple-action candles. You'd use these the same as
above with the single-color candles just only if you are combining intentions into one candle.
You'll start with the first color intention and allow the candle to burn. Then followed with your
second intention.
Types of Candles
Many types of candles can be used with varying intent. Depending on the working, certain candles
can be used. Below you will find descriptions and general uses. For more detailed uses, refer to the
spells at the end of this book.
● Jar, Novenas, and Prayer Candles- These are my favorite types of candles because they
hold the candle dressing much better than rolling a candle in oil and herbs (we will discuss
dressing candles a little later). In my opinion, the best of the jar candles is the "7-day" candle
or the "14-day" candle. The 7-day candle burns for 5 to 7 days while the 14 day lasts for 10 to
14 days. These candles are also called prayer candles as they are often found on church
altars. These candles are best used for prayer, long meditations, and intentions.
● Figure- Figure candles can be found in a variety of colors. These types of candles are mostly
used for work that includes one person whether that is yourself, another, or a couple (using two
candles as a couple). They come in a variety of colors. The colors of the candles correspond to
the Candle Color Meanings chart found in this book. These candles are great to use for
attraction or separation works.
● Genitalia- Genital candles are used to control one's sexual nature and desires. They also
come in many colors and can be used for both white and black magic. Black is generally
associated with hexing works or protection works.
● Cat- Cat candles are often used for luck whether good or bad. Use the corresponding color
chat to determine which type of luck you are seeking.
● Skull- This type of candle is generally used for ancestors or mental type works as the skull
corresponds to either the dead or the brain. You can also use this type of candle as a
substitute for the figure candle.
● Devil- Many people refer to this candle as evil, though it is not always the case. The Devil
candle can be used as a means to uncover lies and deceit. Other uses include lust workings or
banishing the workings of the devil ( if that follows your belief system).
● Cross- The cross or crucifix candle can be used for a variety of purposes similar to those of
the white candle meanings. Working for things like health, purity, positive energy, blessings,
and protection.
● 7 Knob or Wishing candle- This is commonly called the wishing candle because it is used for
just that. Each knob on the candle refers to one wish. The goal is to make a wish and burn one
knob per day for 7 days as you place your parchment paper below the candle as it burns.
● Tea lights, Votives, Chime, Pillar Candles- These candles come in a variety of colors. The
only thing different between these is their size. In order from smallest to largest within the
group- Tea Light, Votive, Chime, and PIllar. The smallest of the group, the tea light, is perfect
for quick work or times when you are not able to leave a bigger candle burning for a long time.
You can dress and use the candle just as any other candle. Because they are so tiny, my
suggestion is to multiply the number of candles you burn so that the intensity and length of the
burning match the intensity of your intention. When working with tea light candles, also
consider the timing of your ritual. If you are looking to do a one-nighter under the new moon for
example, then a tea light is perfect.
● Couples- You will find some candles melded together as couples. They may either be just two
conjoined figure candles, marriage candles, sexual candles, etc. These couple candles are
perfect for works related to relationship works. A note to my LGBTQIA community: I have not
come across many candles that take into consideration that not all romantic relationships are
heterosexual as reflected in the majority of the candle manufacturers. My suggestion is to use
two-figure candles of the sex that represents your or another's relationship. This will be a
perfect substitute.
● Rolled Beeswax- This is one of my favorite types of candles as well because of the nature in
which they are made. Rolled Beeswax candles can contain the candle dressing inside near the
wick or can be rolled on the outside. Either way is effective. One thing to note is the type of
wax this type of candle is made from beeswax. Bees are known for their hard-working nature
so quite naturally the candle will contain this hard-working energy. Ultimately, the candle will
work hard to achieve your desired result.
● Pullout Candles- These are similar to 7-day jar candles, only that you can pull out the entire
candle from the jar. Pullout candles can be used for just about any type of working.
Items for Protection- The proper protection starts with making sure your area is free of clutter. Be
sure that everything is cleaned, swept and/or vacuumed, and mopped. This type of cleaning is not
necessary every time if the area is generally clean.
These items and their descriptions will help protect your energy and space from outside influences.
You may pick one or more of the suggestions below. More than three protection methods are not
necessary.
● Hiding your identity- wearing shades, masks, scarves, hats, etc. Anything that hides
your face, eyes, and head.
● Wrapping your head- This more traditional form of protection is when you wrap a scarf
around your head. It is said to protect your Ori or spirit from outside influences.
● Salt- there are several things you can do with salt including 1. Placing a circle around
you and your altar where the workings are taking place. You can also only place your
work in the circle alone. 2. You can seal your windows and doorways by placing a thin
line at the foot of your door and the base of the window sill. This can be as close as the
room you are in or expanded into the entire home.
● Oils- Placing protection oils on your person and/or space is a sufficient method. Like
salt, you can anoint your windows and doors with the oil. There are several types of
protection oils including Fiery Wall of Protection, War, Dragons Blood, and Uncrossing.
● Smudging- You can use a variety of smudges like the commonly used White Sage and
Palo Santo. Keep the window/s open to allow the smoke to attach to any negative
energy and let it flow out the window. This isn't the strongest method but when paired
with other methods it's sufficient.
● Prayer- Sometimes a simple prayer is all you need to protect your energy and space.
You can create your prayer, utilize passages from the bible, or use other prayer books.
One of my favorite prayer books is the Collection of Selected Prayers by Allan Kardec,
often used by spiritualists. Here are some verses used in hoodoo protection: Psalm 91,
Psalm 40:4-5 Psalm 121, Psalm 116, Psalm 106:7-9, Psalm 18, Psalm 41:1-2, Psalm
23:5-6, Psalm 31:4-6, Psalm 55:16-17,
● Cascarilla- This white powdery substance is made of finely ground egg shells. Often
found within Latin spiritual paths. When using this protection method, it's typically used
in the back of the neck to prevent darker spirits from entering your energy field or even
possession of your body.
● Meditation- Meditating helps to create centering, grounding, and balance which will
help with creating a focus on your intention. This focus helps to dissuade random
entities from entering as you are highly focused and most importantly, it creates
awareness of your surroundings. Your focused state radiates surety and places a guard
up.
● Visualization- Viewing certain talisman(s) of protection around you will help. Setting a
bubble around yourself and your altar to help shield outside influences.
● Crystals- Certain crystals will help deflect negative energy. One of my favorite crystals
is black tourmaline due to its electromagnetic properties. Other crystals are smoky
quartz, black obsidian, clear quartz, tiger's eye, and amethyst to name a few. Best to
place these crystals either by wearing them or placing them on your altar.
Setting Your Altar- Your altar is considered a sacred place and should be treated with care. This
space is the central point for all things ritualistic and spiritual. Your altar can be small and simple or
big and complex. What matters most is that you are connected with the space whether it is atop a
dresser, a stand-alone table, or a custom-made altar box. The more you work with the altar and tend
to it, the more it will assist you in your rituals and workings. There are several different types of altars,
but for the sake of this book, we will discuss the candle magick altar.
Location- Make sure you choose an area that you don't mind being there long term but is convenient
enough for you to work with regularly. A note on location: I have spoken with several individuals who
do not have many options on the location of their altar when living with someone else. They ask one
of two questions: "Can I place the altar in my room" or "can I place my altar in my closet" My
response has generally been, "If you have absolutely no other option, then yes this is ok. I suggest
these locations as a last result because you may be working with energy, deities, and spirits during
your rituals. You are essentially asking this energy to come into the home, but ultimately your
bedroom. As long as you are taking the proper measures of keeping your space cleansed, protected,
and closing out rituals properly then this will be fine.
Cleansing the space- When you have decided on your location, be sure that you wash down your
surface with Florida water or some other spiritual type of water. Following washing it down, you may
consecrate your space with an anointing-type oil like Altar Oil. Lastly (optionally), you may then pray
over your space to give it an added boost. Your area is now ready for magick.
Items on the altar- Many people like to represent the elements on their altar: a glass of water,
crystals- earth, incense- air, and candle- fire. Although we discussed earlier how candles can
represent all of these, it's ok to add these as well. In its most simplistic form, having just a candle on
your altar is ok too. The items on your altar should represent you and must have a significant
meaning in your life. This is not a catch-all place. So whatever items you place on your altar should
be sacred to you. The reason I suggest that they are significant is to prevent you from making the
space cluttered. Examples of items include crystals, a glass of water, feathers, etc.
There are some basic items that you need for Candle Magick. I will briefly discuss the basic items that
are needed.
Intention, Psalm (or other Bible Verses), Incantation, Affirmation- Decide on your intention and
be sure that it is clear. Once you have decided your intention, you will need to decide your
incantation. The incantation is just like a chant that you can repeat once or repeat more often into the
flame. The incantation is very similar to the Affirmation. Optionally, you may use a verse from the
book of Psalms or other verses as your incantation.
● Intention- Your purpose for the candle work. It is your desired result.
● Psalm- These are verses from the bible that are traditionally used in Hoodoo as spell
incantations.
● Incantations- This is the saying aloud of a set of words that are designed to trigger a magickal
effect on a person or object. The words within the incantation should focus on the desired
effect and calling in of any spirits or deities for assistance (if you choose to).
● Affirmation- This is similar to the intention, only that it is formed in an affirmative sentence.
One sentence is best. The longer you make it the more it turns into an incantation.
● Petitions- In addition to your intention, psalms, incantation, or affirmations, the petition is more
of a heartfelt letter that speaks directly to the universe or deity that you are asking to assist.
The most important thing when creating a petition is to speak in the affirmative without
negative words like "no, don't, without, etc.". Additionally, your petition should not focus on
"how" things will happen, but only speak about when it happens. (I have a video on
YouTube.com/SchoolOfMagick that speaks in more detail regarding developing the perfect
Petition). As an alternative to creating a petition, you may also carve names, birthdates, etc
directly into the candle. I will talk more about this in the "Dressing your Candle" section. Note
on Petitions- If you have included a petition, you may burn this paper near the end of your
ritual. Leaving it in ashes. You may circle the remaining burning candle with the flame or toss it
in the wind in a circle as you turn around. Alternatively, you may write your psalm verse on the
paper and place it under the candle as well.
● Candle- Once your intention has been decided and it is clear, you will determine what type of
candle you need based on your intention. The decision on which candle to use will be based
on if you are doing work involving people, luck, etc. Depending on where you get your candles
from, you can cleanse them to be sure to remove all prior energy. Ways to cleanse include
saging it, placing it in the freezer, or washing it with Florida water. Please refer to the types of
candles for assistance.
● Oil- Based on your intention, you will pick the best oil for your intention. You will use this to
dress the candle. We will talk more about dressing candles in a minute. A note on mixing oils:
you may combine oils only if the intentions are similar. For example, you can mix Follow me
Boy oils with Come to me. I would not mix Hexing Oil with Fiery Wall of Protection.
● Herbs/Incense/Powders- You will need to burn some type of incense. This incense does not
need to be the typical incense sticks or cones. You may use incense and charcoal disk to burn
a blend of herbs or powdered herbal blend. However you decide to burn your incense blend, it
is best to put aside some of the herbal blend or powder to dress the candle with as well.
● Pictures, names, birthdays, and taglocks- Using personal information helps to direct the
needed energy toward your candle. Whether it is for yourself or someone else, it helps to make
the ritual more personalized to the target as well as helps in telling the universe or deity that
you are working with, exactly who you are targeting. Taglocks are biological components of a
person- hair, nails, saliva, excretions, dead skin cells, etc. This enhances the workings by
adding DNA to the candle work. Like the name, picture, and birthday, the taglock is a surefire
way of making sure there are no mistakes in whom you are targeting. As we all know, DNA is
unique to each person. Essentially, you are adding a literal piece of that person to the work, as
if they were there with you.
Working Timing- Below are examples of different times to do certain spells. You may use all, some,
or none! It is truly what calls you that matters.
Moon Phases- Moon phases are an additional tool to aid in your candle magick. When harnessing
the power of the moon, you are attaching your result to that energy of the moon.
● Waxing- The Waxing moon is when the moon goes from new moon to full moon. Doing
workings between this time frame is good for intentions that involve attracting and growing.
Examples of these types of workings are: Attracting a soulmate, more money, or the desire to
have more creativity.
● Waning- This moon phase is when the moon goes from full moon to new moon. During this
phase, the moon is decreasing in visibility. Therefore, your workings during this phase should
focus on things like banishing, removal of things from your life, etc.
● New- New moon, also known as, the dark of the moon is when there is no visible moon in the
sky. It is this time that you can do works that you do not want to be seen doing. Additionally,
this extra powerful time can be used to break hexes, curses, and protection works. Other
things to do during this time include doing shadow workings, new endeavors or beginning to
work on attraction workings as the moon enters into the waxing phase. If you miss the exact
date of the new moon, do not fret. You have three days before and after the new moon to
utilize its power.
● Full- Just as powerful as the New moon, the full moon is when the moon is at its fullest
potential. This is due to it being lit up to its brightness potential for the world to see. Examples
of workings to do during this time include gratitude workings, manifestation goals, celebrating
self, self-love, or any work that needs extra power from the full moon. Note: You have three
days before and after the full moon to utilize its power.
Hands-on the Clock- You can break down your timing even by the time of day or the direction of the
hands on the clock. Visualize the clock split into half. When looking at a circular analog clock, the
hands are either moving down towards the 6 or up towards the 12. When the clock is moving from 12
to 6, this is considered the downswing. When the clock is moving from 6 to 12, this is considered the
upswing.
● Downswing- Doing work in the downswing would be things you'd like to remove negative
energy, cast off evil, or keep your enemies down.
● Upswing- Doing work while the clock is moving in the upswing, would be attraction work,
things you want to grow or attracting new love.
Days of the Week- It is said that the days of the week can also influence candle magick. Each day is
connected to a planetary alignment or connected to a deity who holds a specific power, etc. Below
you will find the most commonly used types of workings for the days:
● Monday- Emotional healing, Peace, Protection, Fertility, Travel, Prophetic Dreaming, Legal
Duration of Working- For safety measures, never leave a candle unattended. So the size of the
candle that you use will be greatly determined by the amount of time you can dedicate to your work.
How long to work with the candle- How long you work with the candle is up to you. However, my
suggestions are as follows:
● If you are not able to burn the candle completely, then burn it for at least a minimum of an hour.
● If you are not able to burn for an hour, wait until you have time to do either above.
What do I do now?
Here are the steps to follow in their exact order when working on your magick.
Lighting your Incense- Take your incense stick, incense cone, incense powder mix, or herbs and
light it in the center of your altar.
Connecting with the Candle- You want to spend a few minutes connecting with the candle by
holding it in your hands and adding your energy, and intention to the candle. Feel the flow of energy
between your body, your hands, and to your candle. Really feel into the core of your being your
connection to the candle. Really concentrate on your desire for that candle.
Dressing the Candle- Dressing the candle is simply applying the oil (and optionally
herbs) to the candle.
For candles that are not in containers (like the chime, votive, etc)- When your intention for the
candle is to attract something, then rub the oil from the bottom of the candle to the top. When you are
looking to get rid of or banish, rub the oil from the top to the bottom of the candle. If you are adding
herbs, simply roll the candle into the herbs. Allow the oil to act as a mild adhesive, connecting the
herbs to the candle.
For jar candles- The oil and herb method is rather simple. Sprinkle a little bit of the herb mixture into
the top of the candle. You only need a couple of pinches, do not fill the top of the candle with herbs.
For your oil, you will only need 1 - 3 drops. (Note: Be careful with the amount of oil you pour into the
top of a jar candle.) Too much oil can cause the flame to not light properly. If you would like to add a
few more drops, consider carefully taking a pointed object to poke holes into the top of the candle so
that the oil can fill the holes.
Carving Names, Sigils, etc- Aside from the petition that was spoken of earlier, you may do carvings
into the candle. This can be done optionally alongside the petition. You may do the carvings, petitions,
or do both in the same candle. Carving is just a substitute for the petition but adds just a bit more
energy into the candle's intentions. You may carve names, a short affirmation, a bible verse, or a sigil
(a sigil is a shape made from words within a sentence). Think of it as a shortened or combined
version of a sentence where the letters of the sentence are bound together into the form of a shape.
As your candle begins to burn, feel free to start your incantation, psalm reading, or affirmations. As
you recite your incantations, it is key to pay attention to the color of the flame, if there is any smoke
coming from the flame, and if any sounds are coming from the flame as it burns. If any of the previous
apply, read below on how to interpret the energy from the working.
Reading the candle as it burns- When burning the candle, you need to take into consideration
logical explanations when reading the flame. There are some physics that you must take into account
that are not magickal. The flame may be influenced by an untrimmed wick (tall flame), Soot (colorants
or too much oil being poured into the candle), or the flame going out (strong wind). Aside from these
more commonly known physics, you can read the candle according to the strength of the flame, the
smoke from the flame, and the color of the flame.
● Strong Flame- There is quite a bit of energy behind the work. When a candle burns with this
much intensity, you will likely have a fast and positive result.
● Flame is burning but not strong and not short- When the candle has less intensity but still
burning, there is less energy but because the flame is still steadily burning, means that your
spell is still working. My suggestion is to meditate with the flame more, to give it more energy.
● Flame is there, but is low and barely burning- If the flame in the candle is small, puny, and
barely there, this is an indication that you may not have done the work correctly. Several
factors could be at play including, the timing of the work (whether the day is wrong or the
timing in the situation is wrong or you skipped step work). It could also mean you haven't put
enough energy behind the work: you may have been in the wrong emotional state while doing
the work, you have gone into the working with the wrong intention, or not believing in your
work. If the flame eventually drowns in the melted wax, then your petition will not be granted at
this time. You may try again later.
● A dancing flame- The dancing flame can be a good sign because not only is it a strong flame
with strong energy but has even more energy causing the flame to move in a dancing way. If
the flame is dancing but very erratic, this means that your petition will likely be granted
although some complications may arise or someone may be working against you whether
consciously or subconsciously.
● Flame goes out- This can mean either one or two things: an opposing force has put out the
flame or you have put enough work into the candle that your intention has already been
granted. To determine which is at play, you will need to read the rest of the candle signs to see
which is which.
● Candles will not extinguish- This can mean that your work is not finished and you should
allow the candle to finish burning. Pay careful attention to any signs you may have missed
during the burning. A candle flame that stubbornly stays lit means, “Sit down—you’re not
done.” This could also mean, you have skipped a step or missed some important message
during your candle magick ritual. A helpful spirit or guide is nudging you to go back for what
you forgot. When you feel that it has been settled, try extinguishing the candle again.
Traditionally, spell candles are pinched or snuffed out (meaning to suffocate the flame with a
bell-shaped snuffer or some other fireproof item to cover the candle)—never blow it out.
● Candle won't light- Spells in themselves cannot help you win the results you seek. The
outcome may have already been decided, or be outside of your control. Take some time (days
or weeks) to refocus your intention before trying again. (You can do divination or get/do a
reading instead to find out more about what is blocking you. Meditation and spiritual cleansing
may be required before you can proceed with the spell.
● Lots of smoke- An abundance of smoke is not a good or bad sign. It indicates the element of
Air, the element of communication, and observation is present in the spell. When a spell candle
puts out lots of smoke, you are being called upon to use your eyes and mind to read the
situation. Look at the shape, color, timing, and movement of the smoke to gather helpful
information about the working.
● White smoke- White smoke is widely regarded as a sign of blessings and benevolent spirits. If
a candle breathes out a puff of white smoke, especially at a significant moment, it means that
your wish will be granted. For example, you see the white smoke while thinking of something
or feeling something.
● Black Smoke- Dense, black smoke coming from a ritual candle is thought to represent
negative energy. Conflict, bad luck, and opposing purposes surround your spellwork. Spend
some time in prayer or meditation and do a cleansing ritual before proceeding with the work.
● Candle smoke moves toward you- If the smoke from a ritual candle moves towards you, it
portends success in attracting what you seek. For spells that draw love, money, or healing, this
is a great sign. It means you will shortly achieve what you desire. The exception to this is for
negative workings— i.e.curses, hexes, and tricks. If the candle smoke from a hexing candle
moves toward you (or fills the room), it hints that you will not be able to escape responsibility
from the effects of your magick.
● Candle smoke moves away from you- Smoke that moves dramatically away from you
represents darker energies. In most spells, this is not a good omen. It means that something is
escaping your grasp.
● Smoke moving in a certain direction- In spells to heal, influence, and manipulate others, the
traveling smoke can mean that the work is going as planned. Pay attention to the speed,
direction, and shape of the smoke to determine if your magick is on track.
● Blue flame- Blue fire is a sign of spiritual presence. It is the color of Angelic and Fairy fire. If a
spell candle burns blue or blue-white, it is a sign that high spiritual beings have taken an
interest in your magick. A red or yellow flame means that more mundane—but still potentially
powerful—energy is fueling the spell.
● Candle melts quickly into a puddle of wax- A candle that is not properly contained or
leveled will often develop a hole in the side. This causes melted wax to drip out quickly and
shortens the life of the candle. "Spending" a candle quickly is not necessarily a bad sign—it
can mean that there is passionate, accelerated energy behind your spell. A pile of wax
drippings is always an invitation to ceromancy (divination by wax). Examine the hardened wax
with an open mind, seeing if any shapes or message (s) emerge. There is a whole collection of
folklore about what the various shapes mean. You can go by folklore or you can just use your
intuition.
● Candle burns with no wax drips- This is a sign of a well-conceived and properly executed
spell. I must say, It is also the sign of a well-positioned and correctly-sized wick. Your spell will
go exactly as you have written and expressed it. The candle magick gods have no lessons for
you today.
● Wax drips on one side only.- Something is out of balance. Expect an incomplete result.
Some say that drips on the left (concerning the magick worker) represent an emotional or
psychic imbalance. While drips on the right mean your thoughts and beliefs are getting in the
way of the spell.
● Black pieces appear in melted wax- Sometimes, little bits of burnt wick will break off and sink
into the melted wax. ("Candle crud" is the scientific term.) Debris in the wax signifies
unintended consequences or work that will need to be done after the spell is complete: i.e.
Guilt, broken hearts, karmic baggage, new hassles, and so on. Usually, it's not
super-serious—but not fun, either. Proceed with the work, but be ready to do some clean-up
afterward.
● Soot collects on the candle container- It is rare for a tall jar candle to burn without any soot
appearing on the candle. Magick workers read the amount of soot and the location of the soot
to gather information about the success or failure of the work.
● White soot is a far rarer occurrence and is said to represent spiritual communication

● A candle that explodes, a container that breaks, or some other dramatic candle mishap-
A dramatic ending to your candle-burning ritual means the spellwork has been vetoed by a
greater power. Cleanse yourself, cleanse your ritual space, and abandon the working until you
have more information.
We will start by learning to read the wax of a candle when it's not encased in glass. Please note: The
amount of wax, the flow of the wax, and how much wax is remaining depends on the type of
non-glass candle used. Please note size differences in the candle such as a votive candle being
closer to the surface versus a pillar candle.
When reading the candle, wait until it has been completely extinguished. This tool of divination does
require you to be attuned to your intuition. It's very important to trust your gut in what you may be
seeing and/or feeling in the wax.
If there is no wax remaining you've been given a rare immediate approval from spirit.
Notice the direction in the flow of the wax. Clockwise means your intention is flowing towards you.
While counterclockwise means it's moving away from you. The direction is only based on the intention
and neither is bad or good. For example, if you burned a return to sender candle, with
counterclockwise wax, this is a positive indication that the energy is moving away from you.
Notice the wax cascading downwards like steps? This is an indicator of change.
Leave it somewhere symbolic- Depending on the type of work used, you can leave it somewhere
symbolically significant to your working. For example, money works can be left at the bank.
Keep in a pouch or charm bag- For works of attraction, you may keep the remains in a small pouch
to carry around with you.
Burying your work- If you are looking to attract something, bury your remains under your front
porch. If you are looking to keep something close, bury it in your backyard. If you are looking to keep
something around, bury it in your backyard. If you are looking to get rid of, banish something or any
other hexing works, bury it far away from your home (more specifically, to move away, throw it in
running water). If you do not have a yard, you can bury it in a houseplant. If you are working with a
deity, you may bury it where the deity lives. For example, the orisha Elegua lives at the crossroads.
Remember to never bury or throw the remains of negative spells away in your own home or yard.
Throw it away- If you are looking to attract something you may throw it away in your home. If you are
looking to banish, get rid of or hex works, throw it away far from your home. If you are working with a
deity, you may throw it away where the deity lives. For example, the orisha Oya lives at the
marketplace but can also be found at the gate of a cemetery or graveyard.
Melt it completely- Because fire is a powerful element, you can melt the wax completely away by
adding the remains to a small burning pot. If you are working with a deity, do not use this method as it
may be offensive to them.
Reshaping wax into a new candle- This method should only be used if it is attraction-type work. You
can reshape the wax into a new candle (while adding a new wick) and reburn the used wax until it is
completely melted away. If you are working with a deity, do not use this method.
In this section, you will find different candle works for a variety of situations. Each working will have
the candle color and type of candle (optional), type of oil to dress the candle, incense to burn,
