Example Test

The document contains a final exam for a Mechanics A course, dated January 14, 2019, with six problems related to forces, moments, and structural analysis. Each problem requires calculations involving forces, shear and moment diagrams, and stress analysis. The problems involve various mechanical scenarios, including a chain exerting force on a door, a plane truss under loads, and a rigid bar supported by other bars.

MECHANICS A

Final exam

January 14, 2019

Problem 1.
The chain AB exerts a force of 100 N on the
door at B as depicted in the figure. Determine
the magnitude of the moment of this force along
the hinged axis x of the door.

Problem 2.
A plane truss as shown in the figure is subjected to three loads at B, C and J. Calculate all
8 forces as indicated from 1 to 8 in the figure. Given F, a.

Problem 4.
The rigid bar AB is originally horizontal and is supported by two bars CD and BD as
depicted in the figure. Calculate the forces in the bars if the beam AB carries an uniformly
distributed load q. Properties of the bars are given as:

• (EA)CD = 2 2EA

• (EA)BD = 5EA

Problem 5.
Arm ABC acts as a brake on the pulley (radius r = 200 mm) as shown in the figure. The
coefficient of static friction at B is µs = 0.4. Neglecting friction between the rope and the
pulley, weights of the arm and the pulley. Given W = 150 N .
a. If M = 0, does the 100 N force hold it in equilibrium?
b. If not, determine the smallest and largest moments M that can act on the pulley without
causing it to slip.

Problem 6.
A structural member is subjected to a set of forces and moments. Each separately produces
the stress states at a point as shown in figures (a) and (b). Determine the principal stresses
and their orientations at the point under the effect of combined loading and plot it in a neat
sketch.
