Assessment Explanation
HOW THE STUDENT AND THE WORK ARE ASSESSED
Cambridge IGCSE assessment takes place at the end of the course and can include written, oral,
coursework and practical assessment. This broadens opportunities for students to demonstrate their
learning, particularly when their first language is not English. In many subjects there is a choice between
core and extended curricula, making Cambridge IGCSE suitable for a wide range of abilities.
Grades are benchmarked using eight internationally recognised grades, A* to G. Students studying at the
core level have a maximum top grade of C.
The Cambridge IGCSE examination session begins at the end of April and runs until June. Results are issued
in August.
Some tasks that are entered into the grade book are typical IGCSE exam tasks and give a good indication
of an expected grade. Other tasks may be practising skills that will help students in the exam but
wouldn't be indicative of an exam mark.
The overall mark given by teachers for the term is an indication of a possible IGCSE grade. It is based on
the recent grade boundaries applied by IGCSE. These boundaries differ from one subject to another
depending on the level of its difficulty, the content of the syllabus, and the nature of assessments.

In the second semester, students focused more intensively on the key competencies assessed in IGCSE Reading and
Writing. To develop critical thinking and creativity, they engaged in speaking activities such as debates and Socratic
Seminars. Students also watched Dead Poets Society, a film often used in language courses, and completed writing
tasks aligned with IGCSE formats, including directional, report, and story writing. Inspired by the film’s themes of poetry
and literature, they explored different poetic perspectives and wrote their own poems. The semester concluded with a
unit on science fiction, where students wrote short stories in the genre and participated in related debates, expanding
their skills in both writing and critical discussion.
Elsie has consistently produced high-quality work, demonstrating both sustained effort and thoughtful
ideas. Her writing reflects a strong command of language and a well-developed sense of style. She is
encouraged to maintain this excellent standard moving forward.

This semester, Students explored Tennessee Williams’ iconic play A Streetcar Named Desire. Through close reading
and guided analysis, students examined the historical and social context of post-war America and the cultural tensions
that shape the narrative.
Key areas of focus included characterisation, with particular attention to the psychological depth and complexity of
Blanche DuBois, Stanley Kowalski, and other central figures. Students also explored the play’s major themes, such as
illusion versus reality, power and control, gender roles, and the decline of the Old South.
Additionally, the course investigated the importance of setting, both physical and symbolic, and how it contributes to
the mood, tone, and dramatic tension of the play. Students developed their ability to interpret literary techniques and
dramatic devices while beginning to construct analytical essays, an essential skill for the final examination.
Elsie is an engaged, articulate, and passionate contributor to class discussions. Her essay reflects a
strong command of language and a keen ability to interpret literature in meaningful ways. The clarity
with which she explores and connects major themes in To Kill a Mockingbird sets her work apart.

This trimester, students completed the final topic in this section of the curriculum: Development – Energy and Water.
They examined the water–energy–food nexus, evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of both renewable and
non-renewable energy sources. Class discussions explored the role of energy in global economic development and
addressed the critical question: Can we meet future resource demands without causing environmental harm?
In addition, students refined their structural writing skills and are now better equipped to discuss complex topics with
clarity and critical insight. Toward the end of the term, we also began developing core geographical skills, including
enquiry methods and Ordnance Survey (OS) mapping.
Elsie exhibits exceptional dedication to her studies, consistently delving into complex geographical
topics with great enthusiasm. Her standout analytical skills and clear articulation of ideas distinguish her
as a top-performing student in the class. Elsie's presentation of a superbly documented project in class
further highlights her commitment to excellence. Congratulations on a semester filled with outstanding
achievements!

IGCSE Global Perspectives cultivates critical thinking and research skills by exploring diverse global issues. Students
learn to analyze varying viewpoints and construct reasoned arguments. This semester, they've practice these abilities
through the completion of their Group Report, a key component of the course, where they researched and evaluated a
chosen global topic as a group, demonstrating their ability to synthesize information and present a well-supported
perspective.
During the last semester, the students worked diligently on their group Global Perspectives project,
designed to introduce them to the tests that they undertake next year in Global Perspectives. The group
project served as an introduction to the importance of collaboration, problem-solving, and overcoming
challenges as a team.
Elsie has been an exceptional addition to the school, demonstrating outstanding work ethic and
performance. Her dedication and effort are consistently at the highest level, making her contributions
both impressive and exemplary. It is gratifying as an educator to receive work completed with such
dedication and enthusiasm. I am eager to observe her continued development as a student and her
growth into a capable young adult.

Throughout the semester, students have shown genuine curiosity, maturity, and a strong sense of engagement with the
themes we explored. They approached even the most sensitive and complex topics with empathy and respect, often
bringing thoughtful reflections and meaningful questions to our discussions. I was particularly impressed by their ability
to connect historical events to the present, and to see history not just as a list of facts, but as a way of understanding
the world we live in. Their commitment, both in class and during their trip to Berlin, made this term a rich and rewarding
experience for all of us.
During the second semester, students continued their historical journey through the major global events of the 20th
century. The term began with a deeper investigation into the causes and consequences of the Second World War. We
explored both direct and indirect causes, including the rise of totalitarian regimes, economic instability, and unresolved
tensions from the First World War. Students examined the formation of alliances, the progression of military campaigns,
and key moments such as D-Day, the attack on Pearl Harbor, and the use of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and
Nagasaki. A special focus was given to the Holocaust, including the Kristallnacht, the ghettoisation of Jewish
communities, and the broader system of antisemitic laws and violence. This was followed by a study of the Nuremberg
Trials, during which students reflected on issues of justice, responsibility, and collective memory. These topics were
deeply connected to our observance of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
In the final part of the semester, students were introduced to the Cold War, its origins, ideological divisions between the
United States and the Soviet Union, and key diplomatic moments such as the Yalta and Potsdam Conferences. The
class engaged in comparisons between capitalism and communism, and discussed how this ideological conflict
shaped international relations throughout the 20th century.
Elsie is an excellent student who has distinguished herself through both her academic work and her
classroom behaviour. She approaches each task with seriousness and precision, and her written
assignments—particularly essays—are consistently well-structured and supported by appropriate
sources. Her use of bibliography is particularly strong for her level. Elsie remains attentive and
respectful in class, setting a commendable example for her peers.

The IGCSE Edexcel Psychology course introduces students to the study of human behavior and mental processes.
Here's a simple overview:
Core Topics: The course covers key psychological concepts and theories across five main areas:
Development: How people change and grow from infancy to adulthood.
Memory: How we store, retain, and recall information.
Psychological Problems: Understanding disorders like depression and the effects of mental health.
The Brain and Neuropsychology: Exploring how the brain functions and its role in behavior.
Social Influence: How others affect our behaviors, beliefs, and decisions.
Research Methods: Students learn how psychologists conduct studies, including experiments, observations, and
surveys, and how to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of research.
Application: There’s a strong emphasis on applying psychological concepts to real-life situations, such as
understanding the causes of mental health problems or improving memory.
The course gives students a broad introduction to psychology, fostering critical thinking, analytical skills, and an
understanding of human behavior.
During this past semester, we completed our units on development and social influences. The students
finish the year by researching a career in psychology and presenting their findings to the class.
Hopefully this class was a good introduction to psychology and motivated them to pursue it in the
future as next year we will go further into the content. I strongly encourage Elsie to consider pursuing
psychology next year, as she has been an outstanding member of the class, demonstrating
commendable participation and work ethic. Psychology requires significant dedication, and I believe it
would be highly beneficial for her to continue in this field.
