Progressive Reformers Essay example
10/08/12
Progressive Reformers
The Progressive movement has had a tremendous impact on society and preserving the doctrine of a
democratic nation. The Progressive Era, which initiated between the years 1890 through 1920, was
instituted because progressives who wanted to rid politics of corruption and inefficiency.
Progressives wanted to curtail the power of the business trusts, and protect the general welfare of the
public. The Progressive name derived from forward thinking or progressive goals that its supporters
sought to advance.
John Dewey, who is known as the father of Progressive education, has been most influential in
Educational Progressivism. His vision for schools tied to a larger vision, leading towards a good
society. His ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He states that progressive education has recognized the fundamental importance of the interest of the
learner; it has defended the thesis that activity lies at the root of all true education; it has conceived
learning in terms of life situations and growth of character; it has championed the rights of the child
as a free personality .
Child centered educational practices are shared by progressive educators. The pedagogical method
is object teaching. The teacher begins with an object related to the child s world in order to initiate
the child into the world of the educator. The focus is on thinking and doing. Problem solving skills
are required to overcome obstacles between a given and desired set of circumstances. Education is
not simply a means to a future life, but instead it represents a life to the fullest.
Progressive educators view existing schools as being formal, not focusing on real life situations, and
strict. They prefer variety in classroom preparations and informal interaction between the teacher and
their student. Progressives prefer schools teach useful subjects (including occupations) and
emphasize learning by doing rather than instruction purely from textbooks. This brought about
schools such as trade and vocational schools. The student was placed at the center of thinking, teach
the child not the subject.
John Dewey s model of learning is to: become aware of the problem, define the problem, propose

Over Speeding Persuasive Speech
Over Speeding
Over speeding is a common habit on the roads globally. Several people lose their lives annually
because they are driving beyond the speed limits or fall victims of an over speeding vehicle. This
means that all road users have an obligation to adhere to the road safety measures in order to reduce
the number of increasing fatalities on the road. Australian government through the transport
commission came up with various commercial ads aired on the television and digital media with a
purpose of communicating a specific intention; road safety. This paper will focus on a commercial
ad on over speeding.
The ad titled don t fool yourself, speed kills was launched in 1995. This followed a death tool of
418 on Victorian road. The ad was simply called mum in a Hurry and uploaded on you tube in
2009. It is a one minute commercial. The commercial is owned and managed by Australian
Transport Commission (TAC Victoria) for its anti speed adverts. A mother who is in a hurry
drives her vehicle at a high speed and in a reckless manner that she almost crushes other cars on
the road. The woman could not contain her speed when a pet crossed the road and a boy; Scottie
who was running after it is knocked down and dies. The idea of speed being a killer is justifiable
from the woman s over speeding and death of the boy.

the unexpected happenings. Scottie s mother calls out his son and starts to cry a sign of pain and
grief. The commercial does not use any music but people s voices, emotions and feelings explain the

We Don t Think About Future Generations
Because we don t think about future generations, they will never forget us (Tikkanen, 2011). These
are the types of thoughts that have led Americans and other nations to encourage their citizens to Go
Green in an effort to aid the Earth in its recovery from modern human desecration. Going Green
means to pursue knowledge and practices that can lead to more environmentally friendly and
ecologically responsible decisions and lifestyles, which can help protect the environmentand sustain
its natural resources for current and future generations (Going Green 2015). Today, people have
developed electric cars, solar powered electronics and panels, fabric grocery bags, and other
items, all in an attempt to discontinue using the harmful alternatives people have been using over
the years that has led to the weak environmental state. The fact is that humans are a force of nature
and no matter how environmentally safe a product is presented as being, there will always be
drawbacks and therefore Going Green will always be just as harmful as it is helpful and will not
be practical for most working Americans. The problem for most people is that Going Green is not
cost efficient, and most working families are unable to afford making the efforts. As of September
2015, there were over thirty models of electric cars. The world s top selling highway capable electric
carwas the Nissan Leaf, released in December 2010 (Schaal, 2015). The fact that the vehicle is

Portryal of Andy as a Symbol of Hope in Shawshank...
In 1994, Frank Darabont s film The Shawshank Redemption received a poor reception when
released; it only made a $0.3m profit. More recently the film has become known as one of the
greatest movies of all time, it has inspired hope in many people, helping them to lose weight, leave
abusive marriages and such like. The film is based mainly upon two convicts, and the idea of hope.
Andy Dufresne is a Hot Shot Banker imprisoned with two life sentences, for the suspected murder of
his wife and her lover and Red (Morgan Freeman) whom Andy redeems hope in, along with the other
convicts, saving them from institutionalisation. One of the ways in which Andy saves himself is by
making projects for himself. The first thing that Andy does is to... Show more content on

Red is very reluctant to accept hope, even stating in the film Hope is a dangerous thing; hope can
drive a man insane and this is expressed through shadows cast on him whilst Andy is shown in
the light. This idea of hopelessness exaggerates the redemption of hope expressed later on in the
film, an example of this is right at the very start of the film when the man is beaten so badly by
the prison guards that he dies, Andy s asks a key question that nobody can answer; What was his
name? . This hopelessness is then contrasted when the friendships are formed later on in the film,
when everybody becomes close, which is confirmed when Andy bargains with the guards and
consequently wins three bottles of beer for each of his work mates. Andy s friends and he are
regularly shown laughing together or helping one another to cope, Darabont successfully reflects
hope into the eyes of the viewer through these friendships. Gestures such as the harmonica
illuminate this point when Red begins to create music. Music is constantly used in the film as an
icon of hope; it is used throughout the whole film in various different ways, to express and
exaggerate different emotions that the characters are feeling. We are able to track the change of
emotions and the feelings towards the idea of hope that the convicts in Shawshank have, making the
build up of hope increasingly noticeable to the viewer. The main use of Music
John William Ferrell s Influence On American Culture
Who knew Will Ferrell would be so successful at comedy in every form? John William Ferrell was
born on July 16, 1967 in Irvine, California. Ferrell s comedy career launched as he became part of a
los angeles based show called the Groundlings. His career in comedy skyrocketed when he joined
onto the cast of Saturday Night Live. Will Ferrellhas influenced American Culture by giving people
endless laughs and someone they can connect with on and off the screen. Ferrell became a very
big star after his film anchorman in 2003 along with Talledega Nights the ballad of Ricky Bobby.

Within a few short years, Ferrell had helped lead ratings renaissance for SNL, prompting
television audiences to return each week. For the SNL cast, they said Will was the glue that
holds the show together. After Saturday Night Live was over Ferrell actually had a very
successful career in hollywood unlike others alongside him. In 2003 Ferrell found great success
playing buddy in the movie Elf, along with anchorman (2004), Talladega Nights (2006) Blades of
Glory (2007). Ferrell proved that he wasn t scared to try new things by launching the film funny or
die. Ferrell slid seamlessly into the role of voice actor for the animated Megamind, starring as the
titular villain turned superhero. While generally regarded as quiet and unassuming off set, the
intensely private Ferrell hasn t been afraid to put his politics out front.
Today Will Ferrell is still a very good actor and makes lots of guest appearances on TV shows and
still occasionally still hosts SNL. He is important to American culture by making us all laugh one
way or another and also standing up for others and making a differences in the comedy
Frankish Culture
There were many topics that held my interest but many have already been fully fleshed out in
academic literature. Something that has not been fully explored and still debated is the relationship
of the settled Franks and the native people of the Levant. The crusades were nothing less than a full
on invasion into a foreign and harsh landscape with minimal knowledge of the culture and
landscapes they would have soon encounter. It was incredibly important to the survival of the initial
crusaders and then the crusaders states that they had to adapt from their own European customs to
those of the native Arab populations. The Crusaders became a ruling minority, but not without the
Arabization of their own culture into something that became unique... Show more content on

When researching a topic pertaining to culture it will be imperative to research from both sides of
the culture. To dissuade against bias it was be equally important to include contemporary accounts
from contemporary arabs and muslims. One important primary source is Travels by Ibn Jubayr s
who lived in the twelfth century. Ibn Jubayr was a geographer who travelled around the Levant
while recording what he saw and experienced, including references to the assimilation of the franks
into Muslim culture. For secondary sources I have requested a few books that relate to the cultures
of the crusades and the interactions between them. One such book is The crusades, christianity and
islam by Jonathan Riley Smith is a short summary of the dynamic between the two cultures. I have
also requested a thesis by a URI graduate student about the arabization of the knights templar. The
thesis does not directly relate because it deals with the military order but it does explore the same
underlying theme of the transition of europeans into something more
Raising The Legal Drinking Age
Everyday there is an alcohol related incident in the world. The poor decision making by young
adults cost people s lives everyday. The original drinking age was 18 years old, it was changed
because scientists discovered the brain doesn t fully develop until the age of 21. But what people
don t know is that the brain fully matures at the age of 25 years old. Car rental places have the age
at 25 to be able to rent a car because of young people decision making on drinking and driving. For
students in college alcohol can ruin not only their future of becoming something but it can ruin their
life by doing stupid things. Most college kids who stay out and party in college fail or flunk out.
The dangers of drinking young can lead to many things,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also at this age everyone knows the rules of drinking alcohol, that they shouldn t drive and not to
have too much but younger people think much differently. Younger adults still teenagers think
they can stay out drink and party all night and sneak back home by driving. Little do they know
almost all alcohol related deaths and accidents happen this way because of what the younger
mind thinks. The very first reason why the drinking age of 21 should be raised to 25 is because
the brain and your body full reaches its maturity by the age of 25 years old. With age limit to age
25 it changes a lot of things on the road for people who are driving, walking , and the other
drivers. It creates a more safe environment for the people surrounding you while you drive instead
of driving intoxicated. If the alcohol age is raised to 25 at a more mature age it could cause a
more profound effect on the body when there older( narconon). What this means is that not
drinking at a young age will make you body fully develop without any problems, but if you do
drink you put yourself at risk for when you re older because your body never got the chance to
develop in certain places.Young adults that live in neighborhoods with bars or nightclubs are being
sold alcohol and driving home because they think it s a short drive, an older age of maturity would
stop the thinking of driving( Drinking Age ProCon.org ).Younger drivers that think about driving
home when they drink

Mate started out as a normal teenage girl, trying to find her way in the world. She was the youngest
of four sisters, each one more interesting than the next. Her sisters Dede,
Patria, and Minerva all had different views of everything around them, which in turn influenced her
views of the world since she looked up so much to her sisters. Minerva was very active in the
national underground, Patria eventually got involved due to her problems with her husband Pedrito,
and though Dede was never truly involved, she did support her sisters and their choices. As time

But really what he was planning all along was to let her study for five whole years only to render
that degree useless in the end. How cruel! (91). She discovers Trujillo never had any intention of
letting Minerva use her degree once she had it. Minerva states, His gaze falls on the dice. Slowly, his
lips twist in a wily smile. I ll tell you what. I ll let you toss for the privilege. You win, you get your
wish, I win, I get mine. (75). She decides to be against
Trujillo because her love Palomino is against him. She joins the underground nation in order to be
safe from Trujillo forever. She also joins to be with her beloved Palomino. Mate is sure of who she
is now. She says, My true identity now is Mariposa (#2), waiting daily, hourly, for communications
from up north. (94). She proves to us that sometimes, you need other people to help you along and
see the light.
Mate really grew up in her time that we have seen so far. She got married to Palomino.
This is a great milestone for her, considering all the trust issues she s had after discovering her
father was cheating on her mother. Alvarez stated The Day of Lovers, February 14 (97).
She eventually decided on what she wanted to study at the university and continued on to get her
degree in Philosophy and Letters. Mate confided in us, I told her I was signing up for
Philosophy and Letters... (87). She also decided that not all men are bad, and she is capable of
falling in love with someone wonderful.

Alpine Village Clinic is a small walk in clinic located next to the primary ski area of Alpine

while skiing. It is owned and operated by two physicians: James Peterson, an orthopedist, and
Amanda Cook, an internist (Gapenski and Pink, 2009). The clinic has an outside accountant who
takes care of payroll matters, but Dr. Cook does all the other financial work for the clinic. However,

Daily billings are 20%, 20%, 60% collection based monthly and the lease payment is made on the
first of the month (Gapenski and Pink, 2009). Variable medical costs at the clinic are assumed to
consist entirely of medical and administrative supplies. These supplies, which are estimated to cost
15 percent of billings, are purchased two months before expected usage. On average, the clinic pays
about half of its suppliers in the month of purchase and the other half in the following month
(Gapenski and Pink, 2009).
Clinical labor costs are the primary expense of the clinic. During the high season (December
through March), these costs run $150,000 a month, but some of the clinical staff work only
seasonally, so clinical labor costs drop to $120,000 a month in the remaining months (Gapenski and
Pink, 2009). The clinic pays fixed general and administrative expenses, including clerical labor, of
approximately $30,000 a month, while lease obligations amount to $12,000 per month. These
expenditures are expected to continue at the same level throughout the forecast period. The clinic s
miscellaneous expenses are estimated to be $10,000 monthly.
The clinic has a semi annual, five year, 10 percent, $500,000 term loan outstanding with First
Bank. Payments of $64,752 are due on March 15 and September 15. Also, the clinic is planning to
