What Are The Similarities Between Harry Potter And The...
Harry Potter and the Phallus Fallacy
An exploration of Freudian and Lacanian Phallus Theory
The phallus has long been represented as a powerful symbol time and time again in culture, pop
culture, society and media. Closely linked to the male biological penis, it is representative of
power as well as a symbol of control and strength. Even popular children s literature revolves
around the phallus in an unconscious way. The phallus works in several ways in these cases;
characters often posses objects representative of the phallus which yield power such as the use of
wands, and many story lines follow characters attempting to seize power and trying to maintain that
power with the fear of power loss constantly looming over them. ... Show more content on

A symbolic version of a phallus, such as a wand, sword or cane, is constructed to represent male
generative powers. The phallus in psychoanalytic theory is represented as the supreme symbol of
masculine power and of feminine lack (Rine 14 15). Feminist theorists constructed the term
phallocentrism in order to denote the pervasive privileging of the masculine within the current
system of signification. (Rine 22 26). Freud did not make a distinction between the penis, as a
biological bodily organ, and the phallus as a signifier of sexual difference. Freud s theory of
psychoanalysis argues that whilst men posses a penis, no one can posses a symbolic phallus
(Homer 56). Lacan, in the essay The Signification of the Phallus argues that the difference
between having and being the phallus is that men are positioned as men as long as they are seen to
have the phallus, whereas women, not having a phallus, are seen to be the phallus (Lacan 1309).
To Lacan, the phallus symbolizes both the penis and the clitoris as a signifier but the phallus is
constructed to be a signifier of power and is distinguished between the sexes in terms of lack (Lacan
1306, Rine 14). Lacan s distinction between the penis and the
The Effects Of Cognitive Deficits On Children
Children in institutional care such as foster care or adoption are at a heightened risk for poor
psychosocial outcomes. These risks include psychopathology, substance abuse, juvenile delinquency,
academic failure and problems with peers. Their poor performance may result from their experiences
of either maltreatment or abuse. Given that this population of children has poor long term outcomes,
their deficits in cognitive functioning will assist in the development of more suitable interventions
and psychotherapeutic treatment services. This study examined deficits in memoryusing a sample of
5 to 12 year old maltreated foster/adoption children (n=20) and a comparison group of same aged,
nonmaltreated children living with their biological... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since this is a huge problem in the legal system, there has been a huge debate on whether or not
the reports of recovering memories of abuse can be authentic, since human memory is susceptible
to distortion. These types of memories can either help or hurt people in the system for example
prosecuting an innocent person who was accused of being an abuser. However, very few studies
have been done on the population of at risk children such as those in foster care or adoption.
Children in foster care and adoption are a unique group that deserves research recognition. This
population of children faces a long term life of consequences because of the maltreatment, abuse and
neglect. The importance of being able to understand what child maltreatment and neglect is crucial
because of the danger it can cause a child. Child maltreatment is an urgent public health problem for
many reasons. This paper expects to investigate the negative effects of early maltreatment/abuse on
social and psychological functioning.

Emotion Understanding and Theory of Mind
At risk children such as maltreated and abused children are at a higher risk of poor psychosocial
outcomes such as substance abuse, juvenile delinquency, academic failure, and future problems with
peer relations (Pears Fisher, 2005). This study looked at the deficits in memory abilities among
abused and maltreated children and suggested that being in foster care was
Abdominal Wounds Research Paper
Chest and abdominal wounds were nearly always fatal. Treatment of abdominal wounds often
involved pushing in protruding organs and suturing the wound. Food was withheld because fecal
material leaking from the intestines caused contamination. Opium was often administered to halt the
action of the digestive system. Chest wounds were cleaned and the woundwas sutured. Abdominal
wounds were fatal in almost 90 percent of the cases reported by Union surgeons.
An example of this is the case of Henry A. Barnum. Major General Henry A. Barnum was injured
at Malvern Hill, Virginia on July 1st, 1862, by a musket ball that passed through his left lower
abdomen. The ball penetrated his intestines and hip bone. The wound was determined to be fatal
and he was left in a field hospital. A few days later, he was captured by the enemy and taken 18
miles to Libby Prison. Fifteen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The grisly wounds caused by bullets and shrapnel were often contaminated by clothing and other
debris. Cleaning such a wound was time consuming and often ineffective. However, amputation
made a complex wound simple ( To Bind Up the Nation s Wounds ). Amputation performed within 24
to 48 hours after injury was considered a primary amputation. A secondary amputation was one
performed more than three days after injury. Surgical manuals taught that an amputation should be
performed within the first two days following injury. Confederate General Thomas J. Stonewall
Jackson, who had his left arm amputated, was said to have stated that the sound of the saw on the
bone was the sweetest music he had ever heard. He also described chloroform as an infinite blessing
(Wheat, T. A.). Of the approximately 30,000 amputations performed in the Civil War there was a
26.3 percent mortality rate. In the 1870 Franco Prussian War, despite the lessons learned in the Civil
War, the mortality rate for amputations was 76 percent (Burns, Stanley
The Y2k Catastrophe And Its Effects On Society
The Y2K Catastrophe
In The midst of a rising industrial climate, the 1990s was a time for change and expansion. On
December thirty first, 1999 nearly every developed nation in the world anticipated the oncoming new
millennium. After strike of midnight, January first, 2000 a forecasted event would take place, and
many in the world were anxious to comprehend the supposed inevitable. The occurrence of the Y2K
scare changed the way the world revolves around technology during the time period, which has
lasting residual effects on society.
The fear that drove society and a complete farce was the idea that everything on which the modern
world relied would simply come to a halt at the turn of the century. This contemporary concern of the
time over technology caused an alarming dissonance between people s daily realities and the threat
of an impending apocalyptic future.
At the height of computer development, for convenience purposes, digital programmers used two
digit codes in place of the years. For example, instead of writing 1986, computer engineers simply
dated programs with 86, the 19 was left out purposefully. Engineers compressed data usage to save
storage, which at the time was very costly and took up unnecessary space. Eventually these
programmers realized that once the year 2000 comes around then, the dates would revert to 00
which computers will assume to be 1900. A simple date change to humans would equal a major
blunder to a computer. This glitch held the
Leningrad State Of Siege Essay
In the Book, Leningrad; State of Siege by Michael Jones, it tells a story about the surrounding of
the Soviet city from September 8th 1941 until January 27th 1944. For a total of 872 days, Nazi
Germany and Finish armies surrounded the city and chocked them of anything getting out or in.
Hitler wanted to starve the citizens until they eventually would surrender. Jones show through the
beginning, during and the end of the siege through various mean to get the idea of how they
survived. Jones best use of historical evidence is his use of firsthand account of the arch of the siege
and using those to also explain why the city survived for so long. Some say when individuals deal
with hunger, starvation, bombings, and everything else, the last... Show more content on

To survive the food shortages, and to deal with problem mentally some would often write diaries,
sketch or preform to get the situation out of their mind. These firsthand accounts of the citizens
of Leningrad shows how the people tried to stop the enemies from winning. Jones says that Each
diary relates an inner journey, and together they allow us to hear the real voice of Leningrad,
which many of the diarists must have feared was about to be silenced by the enemy. These diaries
helped keep up the moral of the Leningraders who were suffering from the lack of food. Jones uses
interviews done by Danil Granin, who spent years afterword s interviewing survivor, said Morale
was one of the major characteristics of the heroic battle for Leningrad, not patriotism, but rather the
perseverance of the intellect, the protest against the humiliation of hunger, against the
dehumanization. Those who saved others were saved themselves. Jones show that trying to
survive during the siege wasn t just about trying to get food but also use the time and energy they
had in trying to do something else. If you didn t do anything to keep your mind busy then in the
end you ll fade away, and the people that faded away died. The people who did survive concluded
their minds were the best to stay awake and alter to
Persuasive Essay On Why Kids Should Paid An Allowance
Additionally, forty eight percent of parents who had children in school paid them for good grades.
The average pay rate for an A was $16.60.
Many children receive a pretty decent allowance, but just how do they spend it? Are they allowed
by their parents to spend it? USA Weekend conducted a survey on teens and they found out that
seventy five percent of teens are in complete control of what they spend their money on. They should
be advised, but not restricted. The teens need to learn about what they need to buy versus what they
want to buy. This will teach the child to be responsible with his or her earnings. However, it is
important that the parent does not pay for something the child would regularly pay for if they are
short on cash ( How Your Child Spends His Allowance ). In general, children will pay for things
that entertain them and things they want. Parents will typically pay for things they ask for
objects that are more expensive like cars, cell phones, movies, downloads, and sports or hobby
equipment (Smith). One mom had a great method to teach her children about the true value of
money. After walking around with them in the store, they would ask for small toys all throughout
the store. Consequently, the mom said no and later decided to start paying an allowance and let
them buy the toys instead. Her reasoning behind this technique was to supply her children with
enough money to buy maybe a few toys at a time. This caused the children to think critically
about whether they actually wanted the toy or not and why they should buy one toy over another.
More things to avoid paying for as the children get older are library book fines (if they are into
reading that is), souvenirs that would be bought on vacation, and books or other items from book
fairs (Kerry). The kids can figure out what they should spend their money on. Long story short, if
parents are going to pay an allowance, make sure the kids know what they are getting paid for.
A fair point can be made on the side of children not receiving an allowance. Some parents may say
that they did not get paid for household chores so why should they show their kid that it is normal to
be paid for chores. Another main point of the argument against paying
Comparing Engel And Rosenthal s Five Sisters
While reading through the memoirs in Engel and Rosenthal s Five Sisters, you can see that all the
women share similar goals. They all are fighting against the autocracy in hopes of betterment of
life for those in the middle and lower classes. While all of the sisters have many aspects of the
revolutionary lives in common, each has a slightly different upbringing, which impacts the
revolutionary road they choose to take. Comparing and contrasting Vera Figner and Elizaveta
Kovalskaia, you can see how different ways of life in their younger years shapes the values and
ideals that guide them in the path to revolution. While they have many parts of their lives in
common in their later years, their childhood experiences were vastly different.... Show more content

Kovalskaia is the only one of the five sisters to have been born a peasant. From the very
beginning, not only was Kovalskaia exposed to the life of peasantry, but also she lived in it. From
my earliest years, life seemed incomprehensible and cruel to me. I think I was barely six when I
became aware that there were landowners and peasant serfs in the world; that landowners could
sell people, and that my father could separate my mother and me by selling her to one
neighboring landowner and me to another. 5 She eventually escaped the title of serf when she
asked her father for her freedom for her and her mother at age seven. As Kovalskaia grew up she
was influenced by a majority of people. She would hear stories from milkmaids that would terrify
her, You ll grow up someday, too and then they ll sell you. I was tormented by nightmares: I
dreamt that they were selling me. 6 Many people she interacted with spoke unkindly of the tsar
and of the fates of those who tried to oppose him. All of these events left such an impression of
Kovalskaia that eventually led her to become a feminist. After being enrolled in schools fit for
the daughter of a wealthy landowner, Kovalskaia used the estate that her father had left her to
organize women s groups in which Kovalskaia gave free courses for women seeking higher
education. One group led to another and eventually Kovalskaia worked in a group devoted to
women workers and taught bits of socialism. These groups were eventually ordered to discontinue.
Kovalskaia moved to Zurich where she was really exposed to revolutionary ideas and aligned
herself with Bakuninism. Here she really took an interest in educating the factory workers and
spreading

My Experience With A Lifeguard At The Winner City Pool
In my eighteen years of my life, this summer has surely been the most memorable. It was filled with
countless wonderful memories during these past three months. This summer was filled with loads of
amusement, excitement, nerves, and sadness. Summer started one week early, however, other than
that it was to an extent, the same as the other summers. I spent a vast deal of my time working, with
my friends and family, and in the gym.
This year marked my fourth year working as a lifeguard at the Winner city pool. Each year I have
worked, we only jumped in for kids around three times the entire summer, and this year we jumped
in over ten times. I jumped into the deep side of the pool, which is twelve feet deep and grab a
little boy who started sinking after he jumped off the diving board. It was not strenuous for the
sake of him being light and I could just grab his arm and pull him to the ladder, however, it made
me insanely scary, and I was a little shaken up afterwards. Also, this year I accomplished my third
year of private swimming lessons. Usually I teach around ten to twelve lessons a summer and this
year I doubled that and had twenty seven kids for lessons. Scheduling lessons this year was not
effortless, in consideration of working at the pool and teaching kids basically consumed my summer.
This past summer was comparable to the past summers. I was with my friends and family tons.
Sunday nights were the nights my friends and I would drive to the outdoor movie theater,

2.6CRITERIA FOR CHOOSING MAGNETIC ELECTRODEPOSITION AS A COBALT
RECOVERY METHOD FROM LITHIUM ION BATTERIES.
A lot of approaches have done to recover the cobalt from the spent lithium ion batteries. But there s
are a gap in terms of purity and quality between the mining commercial metals and the recycled
metals from the waste such as LiB. Moreover, the current recovering techniques request a many of
steps to reach the end application product.
The current electrodeposition technology could recover the cobalt from spent LiB, however at the
uncontrolled morphology, limiting its technological applications. Motivated by the ferromagnetic
properties of cobalt, magnetic field will be used in this work to enhance the electrodeposition
process to produce controlled morphology cobalt oxide from spent LiB. To explain more, the
