The 1960 Chilean Earthquake and 2010 Haiti Earthquake

Earth is a life giving planet. It is also true that it s never at rest. It is in a daily course of revolution
and rotation, making us experience not only night and day, but also seasons. This planet goes
through many changes that brings wonders, but also catastrophes. These forces of nature leave
damages and deaths all over the world. One of these cataclysm is earthquakes. What exactly is an
earthquake? An earthquake is the ground shaking caused by the sudden movement of one block or
rock slipping past another along the faults (Lutgens, Tarbuck). There is a process that causes an
earthquake to happen. First it involves the heating, followed by ... Show more content on

To begin with, what exactly caused both of these quakes? Well, a cycle is happening above as
well as beneath the surface. This cycle involves the movement of tectonic plates. Both of these
earthquakes were caused by the movement of two very different plates. The Chilean earthquake
was caused by the Nazca Plate sub ducting under the South American plate. This means these two
plates collided along the plate boundaries, which made one slip underneath the other. The bottom
plate slowly pushed the top plate, and was then released causing the earthquake. The magnitude
for the quake was of 9.5, being the largest earthquake ever recorded. The Haiti quake was caused
by a lateral strike slip motion. There was a separation in the boundary region of the Caribbean
Plate and North American Plate. As the plates glided past one another, strain and compression was
building along the fault. There was a release of energy that resulted in ground shaking. The Haiti
earthquake had a magnitude of 7.0. The number of deaths and damages is the biggest difference
between the two. You would think that the largest earthquake ever recorded would also have tragic
numbers, but it didn t. The Chile earthquake reached an approximate number of about 2,000 deaths
and. While the Haiti earthquake had an estimate of 316,000 killed or missing. How is this
possible? Well, this is because Chile has strict building codes that help buildings resist. In
comparison to Haiti which is a very poor country. 86% of people were living in slum conditions and
tightly packed, poorly build, concrete
The Relationship between Academic Obstacles and Facilitators
University students make up a large population in most countries and may be the most important
individual s part of a society; as they constitute of future professionals and degree obtainers. The
life of a student is very different to other age groups and may prove to be extremely stressful and
pressurised as the importance to having a profession, especially in South Africa, is heightened
because of financial pressure and recessions. It has been argued and researched that the well being
of a studentis important for their academic performance, therefore their health needs to be taken into
context and maintained to ensure peak performance. The purpose of this essay is to assess the
relationship between academic obstacles and facilitators and how they hinder or promote academic
performance, as well as how it may affect the well being of the student.
When students are going through a stressful period in their studies, such as exam time or when
assignments are due, they often feel exhausted and sometimes unable to manage their time properly
in order to get their work done on time, or simply not being able to cope with the nature of the work.
It is argued that students who are experiencing emotional exhaustion will perform poorly in their
studies (Salanova, Schaufeli, Martinez Breso, 2008). This is because students who feel exhausted
will experience feelings of demotivation, irritability, detachment and cynicism towards their work.
While those who have positive feelings
Strange Fruit Meaning
Strange Fruit The song Strange Fruit was first recorded by the famous jazz singer Billie Holiday
and release in 1939. The genre of the song was blues and jazz. Strange Fruit was an early cry for
the Civil Rights Movement, exposed racism, and performed the practice o hanging. The song has
simple lyrics, that carry a huge strength, and haunt you even when the song is over. The
juxtaposition of the beautiful landscape, the scent of flowers, with the blood of human beings
brutally beaten, gives a powerful and poignant felling to the song. The song exposes the brutality of
racism in America, and doesn t leave any room for more words. When the meaning of the song is
fully grasped, one remains shocked, angry and disguste by the imagery portrayed.... Show more

Billie Holiday, perhaps the greates singer in the jazz history, delivers a soul emptying vocal lament
over a groove as deep and dark as the history of lynching itself. In Holiday s unforgettable singing
we can hear all the rage and resignation, the sorrow and determination, the bitterness and hope, as
if her voice could carry the full emotional burden of the long and conflicted history of race in
America. The song is heartbraking. The song is simple in its structure, having only three stanzas
and 12 lines. The lines follow a rhyme pattern, where in each consecutive pair of lines has their
ending thyming with each other. Stange Fruit describes the scene of a lynching of a Black
American and its resemblance to a fruit hanging from a tree. The bodies were described as
strange fruits . There are a few methafors in the song; trees are symbol of life. Meeropol s tree has
blood on the leaves and blood at the root , showing that both recent and older generations of African
Americans have experienced the same sort of violent persecution. This portest song was praised for
its concise yet strong description of the butal treatment given to Black Americans. Holiday s
rendition decorated it with such beauty and power that caught the attention of White Americas. This
ignited the Black s desire to fight for their

By utilizing a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis, individuals and
corporations alike can determine where their weak spots are and attempt to correct them prior to the
risk occurring. Taking into consideration the Benefits Election System, there are several potential
risks within the systems. These risks include database corruption, spyware, and hacking.

Database Corruption

Database corruption is one potential safety concern for the Benefits Election System. Database
corruption comes in several forms including viruses and worms. Viruses act as a real program that
is installed on the computer or network and every time the program is accessed the virus spreads to
other programs until the system and/or computer essentially crashes. On the other hand, worms
attack the security holes within a network. Like viruses, worms attach themselves to holes within the
security of the network. Once worms have attached to the network the worm then scans for other
networks with holes to replicate. This kind of corruption to the system can lead to loss and damage
of information on the system. Anti corruption software is readily available in today s market which

Energy measurements
Calories
Calorie a unit of heat equal to the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of 1,000 grams
of water by one degree Celsius. This unit is used as a measure of the energy released by food as it is
digested by the human body. Also called kilocalorie, large calorie.
Joules
In terms of kinetic energy, one joule is equal to the energy of a mass of two kilograms moving at a
velocity of one meter per second. It equals about 0.24 calories, or roughly the energy required to
raise a spoonful of food to mouth.
Kilocalories

Carbohydrates come in simple forms such as sugars and in complex forms such as starches and
fibre. The body breaks down most sugars and starches into glucose, a simple sugar that the body can
use to feed its cells.
Proteins
Protein from animal sources, such as meat and milk, is called complete, because it contains all nine
of the essential amino acids. Most vegetable protein is considered incomplete because it lacks one
or more of the essential amino acids.

Measuring requirements
Body composition
In physical fitness, body composition is used to describe the percentages of fat, bone, water and
muscle in human bodies. Because muscular tissue takes up less space in our body than fat tissue,
our body composition, as well as our weight, determines leanness.
Basal metabolic rate
This rate at which the body uses energy while at rest to maintain vital functions such as breathing
and keeping warm.
Lean body mass
Lean Body Mass is a component of body composition, calculated by subtracting body fat weight
from total body weight: total body weight is lean plus fat.
Percentage body fat (skinfold analysis)
In your body you have a certain percentage of fat this is increase by the food you eat and decrease
by how much exercise you do to burn off the fat in your body. For example 20% fat in the
4 Cranial Nerves Lab
Introduction:
The purpose of this experiment is to evaluate the 4 cranial nerves that are used for vision and eye
movement based on their functions by performing several tests. With that being said, there are 12
cranial nerves in the body. The first cranial nerve is known as Olfactory Nerve I. This nerve is
used for smell. Next, is the nerve that is used for vision and that is Optic Nerve II. The third cranial
nerve is the Oculomotor Nerve III, which allows movement of the eye in several directions
including up, down, up and inward. In addition, this nerve controls the pupil. Next, is the Trochlear

Automation in Transportation Fare Collection Essay
INTRODUCTION
Automation in transportation fare collection represents a major technological advancement in the
history of urban public transportation. The move toward changes in the technology and
methodology of fare collection has indeed become the order of the day as older and larger transit
systems search for more efficient collection, better revenue control and effective marketing
technique (Jones, 1985).
The purpose of this project is to determine the feasibility of implementing different automated
technologies in transportation system within Metro Manila areas and other cities in the Philippines to
assist in the collection and accounting of passenger fares.
The study includes the following objectives:

While in rural and provincial areas simple paper and pencil method may be used. While this simpler
methods may require less infrastructure i.e. computers, communications equipment etc, they may
actually be less efficient, requiring more time for personnel to consolidate data, invoice for services,
and complete other data management requirements.
Some larger modernized transit systems are already using automated/electronic methods of
collecting fares, tracking ridership information, and invoicing companies for rides. Electronic
method has two basic parameters for fare payments, these are (1) Payment options i.e. single ride,
multi ride, period pass, stored value, and post payment; and (2) Payment media i.e. cash, token, paper
ticket, magnetic ticket, smart card, credit card, debit /ATM card, and transit vouchers. In addition to
this method, some cities have also implemented software solutions to automate their data
collection, analysis and reporting in as much as possible. The Breeze by MARTA used in North
America and The Client Ridership Referral and Financial Tracking (CRRAFT) system used in
Mexico are some of the examples of this type of software solutions aside from the customised
software applications and commercial off the shelves systems are also available.

Rhetorical Questions In My Last Duchess By Robert Browning
The poem My Last Duchess is a historical event that involves the Duke of Ferrara and Alfonso who
lived in the 16th century. Robert Browning My Last Duchess presents a narrative about a recently
widowed Duke who talks with an emissary had come to an arranged marriage with another lady
from a powerful and wealthy family. In the perspective of Duke, power and wealth were integral in
marriage and was determined to be married to a wealthy lady from a famous family. As the Duke
orients the emissary through the palace, he stops and shows a portrait of the late Duchess who was
a lovely and young girl. The Duke then begins by stating information about the picture and then to
the Duchess. Duke claims that the Duchess flirted with everyone and did not appreciate the history
of the family: gift of a nine hundred years old name. (33) However, when an individual continues
to read the poem, it is evident that the Duke played an important role in killing the lady. Duke states
that he gave commands; / Then all smiles stopped together (45 46) he used these words to define the
death of his beloved Duchess. The aim of the essay is to analyze literary devices that emphasize the
content of the poem, which includes rhetorical questions, exclamation mark, and em dash.
Browning has used extensively rhetorical questions. Rhetorical questions are questions that are
posted in a literary work that does not need an answer: the strategic aims of rhetorical questions
are for emphasizing an issue or creating an object. Duke indicates the aspect of misogyny through
stating Will t please you sit and look at her? I said. (5) This is not a suggestion but indicates an
aspect of command especially when he completes the state with I said. Reading the poem shows that
the Duke never appreciated women or had a negative perspective of women, which may have
contributed to the death of Duchess. The approach taken is a form of objectification of women,
which may have been right at the time but the current society frown about it. In addition, the Duke
wants the reader to sympathize with him and he states A heart how shall I say? too soon made glad,
(22) indicating that he lacks the wording for his comments. Even though he may have contributed
Christian Sayings
Within Christian circles, there are many different expressions and phrases that have become
commonplace. Among those heavily used sayings is the notion that Christians are to be in the world
but not of the world.
This phrase, that is often recited as if it were a direct quote from scripture, is used as a mantra by
many Christians to separated themselves from the world. So what does it actually mean for a
follower of Christ to be in the world but not of it, and does the phrase s common application aid the
advancement of the gospel?
Daniel Chinn, assistant professor of biblical and theological studies, said Christians started using the
phrase as an interpretation of a bible passage and though the phrase is often treated as scripture it is
not in the bible verbatim.
The phrase In the world but not of the world comes from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
God is consistently saying all the way through This earth is good and my people are going to live
here forever like I designed it to be from the very beginning, Chinn said. And then smack dab in the
middle of the story you ve got the incarnation, which I think is God s greatest statement to say My
created world is good, so good in fact, that I, the second person of the trinity, am going to come
down and take on the dirt of humanity, literally.
Though the phrase In the world but not of the world has truth that can be unpacked from it, Chinn
said the implication of how Christians commonly use the phrase is flawed because often it is used to
justify separation of themselves from their culture, which is not what scripture is calling them to do.
Some Christians hold a prospective that the culture is bad, Chinn said, and many separate themselves
from the culture by having all things Christian in their
